"Manual override? Bring it on," Charles growled, his fingers flying across the glowing console.

"You really think you can just press a button and walk away, Vane?" The voice wasn't a projection this time; it crackled through the hospital’s intercom system, layered with digitized static.

"Who's that? Show yourself, you coward!" Charles yelled, slamming his hand against the console.

"I’m the one who’s about to put you out of your misery," the voice laughed, cool and detached. "You’ve caused enough trouble for one day. Don't you think?"

"Trouble? You’ve got people dying out there! You think this is some kind of game?"

"It is a game, Charles. And you’ve played your part beautifully. But all good things must come to an end, right?"

"I’m not done yet," Charles snarled, finishing the final sequence of the virus upload. "You’re going to watch as I tear your little experiment to shreds."

"You’re just a glitch, Charles. A beautiful, violent little mistake. Do you really believe you can find your way out of this labyrinth?"

"I don't need a map," Charles retorted, his voice dripping with adrenaline-fueled defiance. "I just need to find the exit and burn the bridges behind me."

"Then run, Charles. The self-destruct is already at ten seconds. Let’s see how fast that 'augmented' heart of yours can beat."

"Ten seconds? You sick bastard!"

"Nine. Eight. Seven."

Charles didn't wait. He grabbed his pipe, his muscles screaming as he lunged toward the heavy steel door.

"Six. Five."

"Come on, move!" he hissed to himself, his legs burning as he hit the corridor outside.

"Four. Three."

The lights in the hallway flickered and died, replaced by a strobing, blood-red emergency light.

"Two. One."

Charles hit the ground, curling into a ball as the world behind him turned into a roiling, white-hot vacuum of fire. The shockwave lifted him off the floor, slamming him into the opposite wall with a force that rattled his teeth.

"Is that it?" he gasped, pulling himself up, his ears ringing with the sound of collapsing concrete. "Is that all you've got?"

The corridor was a tangled mess of steel rebar and shattered glass. A group of the undead, previously held in place by the facility's control signal, began to twitch and groan, their movements erratic and disorganized.

"Finally," Charles muttered, gripping his pipe. "No more signals. No more puppet masters. Just you and me."

He sprinted forward, the adrenaline surge burning through his veins. He didn't just run; he was a blur of violence.

"Out of the way!" he barked, swinging the pipe in a lethal arc.

A creature lunged, its jaw hanging wide, but Charles caught it mid-air, the momentum of his strike crushing its temple.

"Come on! Is that all you've got?"

He danced through the wreckage, his movements fluid and precise. A second creature tried to grab him, but he slipped beneath its reach, his elbow connecting with its throat.

"You’re nothing without the signal, are you? Just rot and hunger."

"Charlie?" A soft, fearful whisper echoed from the end of the hall.

Charles froze. He spun around, his heart hammering against his ribs. Elena stood in the shadows of a supply closet, her clothes torn, her eyes wide with terror.

"Elena? Oh my god, El!" he shouted, dropping the pipe and rushing toward her.

"Charlie? Is it really you?" She threw herself into his arms, her body trembling with a mixture of relief and shock.

"I’ve got you," he whispered, burying his face in her hair. "I’m here. I’m not letting anything happen to you. Never again."

"They were everywhere, Charlie. I thought I’d never see you again. I thought you were dead."

"I told you I was coming for you," he said, pulling back to look at her. His thumb traced the line of her jaw, his touch light, almost reverent. "Did you stay hidden like I asked?"

"I tried. It was so hard, Charlie. The noises... they were so loud. I just kept thinking about you. I kept thinking about how you promised."

"You’re safe now," he said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur. "I’m taking you out of here. We’re leaving this hell behind."

"How? Look at all of them, Charlie! They're everywhere!"

"They’re nothing," he promised, his eyes darkening as he looked toward the exit. "We’re going to walk right through them."

"You sound so different," she whispered, her hands resting on his chest. "Your heart... it’s beating so fast. Are you okay?"

"I’m better than okay," he replied, a strange, terrifying calm settling over him. "I’m finally starting to see everything clearly. Every string. Every move they made."

"What are you talking about, Charlie? Please, let's just go."

"We will," he said, grabbing her hand and pulling her close. "But first, I need you to stay behind me. Don't look at them. Just look at me."

"I trust you," she whispered, her voice hitching. "I’ve always trusted you."

"Good," he said, the word a promise and a threat. "Because we’re about to start a new life, El. A life where nobody tells us what to do."

He started walking, his grip on her hand firm and possessive. As they passed a flickering, half-destroyed terminal, a small, data-storage device fell from the console, clattering onto the floor.

Charles paused, his eyes narrowing. He picked it up, slotting it into his phone interface.

[FILE ACCESS: RESTRICTED]

[SUBJECT: Vane, C. - BIOLOGICAL LINEAGE]

"What's that?" Elena asked, leaning closer.

Charles stared at the screen, his pulse skipping a beat. The file contained two names he hadn't seen in years. Names he’d been told were erased in a fire.

"My parents," he whispered, his voice trembling. "They’re not dead. They’re... they’re part of the project."

"What? Charlie, that’s impossible. You saw the death certificates."

"They were lies," he hissed, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying fire. "Everything they told me, everything they built... it was all a fucking lie."

"Charlie, let’s go. Please," she begged, pulling at his arm.

"No," he said, his voice hardening into steel. "I’m not leaving until I find them. If they’re the ones who built this, if they’re the ones who turned me into this... I’m going to make them answer for every second of this nightmare."

"You’re not going alone," Elena whispered, her eyes meeting his with a desperate, fierce intensity. "I’m with you, Charlie. Whatever happens, I’m with you."

Charles looked at her really looked at her and saw the same fire, the same refusal to be a pawn. He leaned in, pressing his forehead against hers.

"Then we’re going to tear it all down," he vowed, his breath warm against her skin. "Every layer of this simulation, every secret they’ve kept. We’re going to be the ones who finally wake up."

"Let's go then," she said, her voice steady. "Let's burn it down."

He grabbed his pipe, the iron feeling heavy and solid in his hand. He led her toward the exit, his focus shifting from survival to vengeance. The hospital was a ruin, the city a tomb, but for the first time, Charles felt the weight of the chains falling away.

He was no longer just a subject. He was the end of the line. And he was coming for them all.

The static in the alleyway still clung to the air like ozone after a lightning strike. Charles stood amidst the gloom, his breath coming in shallow, ragged puffs. He stared at the spot where the agent had vanished, his hands still curled into white-knuckled fists."Coordinates," Charles muttered, his voice gravelly. He tapped his temple, forcing the System to replay the flickering data stream he’d caught during the scuffle. "You left a breadcrumb, didn't you? Let’s see what you’re hiding."A translucent map bloomed in his vision, highlighting a path toward the St. Jude Medical Center, four blocks away."Medical center," he whispered, a bitter taste rising in his throat. "Of course. Everyone goes to the hospital when the world ends. It’s the perfect trap."He began to move, his boots silent on the cracked pavement. He didn't run; he flowed, his agility now pushing the limits of his human frame. He rounded a corner, only to freeze. A black-clad team not the shambling dead, but tactical

The cold air of the Seattle night bit into Charles’s skin, but he didn't shiver. He kept his eyes locked on the silhouette of the parking structure, the silence of the city feeling like a held breath."You’re still there, aren't you?" Charles whispered to the wind, his voice a low, raspy threat. He didn't move toward the building. Instead, he pulled a handful of heavy glass vials he had scavenged from a dumpster behind a pharmacy. He smashed them against a metal dumpster thirty feet to his left. The sound a sharp, cacophonous shattering rang out through the plaza like a gunshot."Hey! Over here!" he shouted, throwing his voice toward the shadows of the alley, making it sound like he was stumbling. He slipped into the dark recess of a maintenance bay, his muscles coiled, heart rate steady. He watched. A flicker of movement caught the moonlight a lean, athletic figure in matte-black gear, dropping from the ledge with a silent, practiced grace."Gotcha," Charles murmured. The agent moved

His boots struck the concrete with rhythmic, calculated strikes, each impact serving as a heartbeat for the cold machine his psyche had become. He didn't need to check his reflection to know his eyes were different. The reflection in the smudged, dark glass of the emergency exit showed a man who had left humanity in the basement with the bodies of his captors. He reached the ground floor of the commercial plaza. The stairwell was a vertical throat of echoes and metallic groans. Charles descended with a hunter’s grace, his boots barely making a sound on the concrete. He reached the ground floor lobby, his lungs steady, his mind a cold, calculating machine. The lobby was a wreckage of shattered glass and discarded luggage.A smear of fresh blood led toward the basement garage entrance. He saw the heavy door held slightly ajar a clear sign someone had passed through recently."Arthur," Charles muttered, his voice devoid of affection. "You always were a coward, weren't you? You didn't even check on me. You just ran."He stepped into the garage. The lighting here was abysmal, flickering with a dying yellow buzz. Then, the silence shattered. A wet, rhythmic slapping sound emerged from behind a support pillar too heavy, too deliberate to be one of the shambling husks he had encountered upstairs.[Warning: Evolved Hostile Detected: Stalker Class.][Task: Terminate Evolved Threat. The hallway was a dim, flickering tunnel of misery. The fluorescent light above flickered with a rhythmic, dying buzz, casting long, jumping shadows across the blood-slicked carpet. The steel pipe he’d scavenged from his kitchen plumbing felt balanced, heavy, and lethal in his grip.[Task: Clear the Hallway.
