Chapter 68: Clash at the Queue
last update2025-09-03 01:36:12

The queue had gone quiet the moment the two captains agreed to settle things with a fight. Dozens of mercenaries and adventurers from other teams lingered at the edges of the queue, eager for entertainment. It wasn’t every day that two teams aired their grudge in front of the imperial officers. The imperial officers themselves didn't seem to care what these mercenaries were about to fight for a spot either.

Talon stepped forward when the opposing captain’s sneer landed on him. “The skinny one?" the man asked, with a face of ridicule. “Are you so scared of losing that you'd rather not try to win at all?"

Talon tilted his head, more amused than insulted. Skinny lad, eh? He gave his wrist a stretch, "These bones aren't for decoration... you might just choke on them..."

The crowd began to feel excited, with whispers and hollers coming from different sides. The eye of the opposing captain twitched slightly.

Talon's captain smiled, "Why? Are you still scared of losing?"

The ruins stretched for miles, a wasteland of shattered stone and broken landscapes, all hidden under a mountain range. From above, it probably looked like nothing but an endless graveyard. Down on the ground, though, it was worse; every step carried a risk of sudden death. “Traps,” one of the younger adventurers muttered, pointing at a half-collapsed hallway ahead. Rusted arrows still jutted out of the stone walls like teeth. Evidence of the previous expedition teams that had passed through. The Team Captain gave it a glance. “Don’t worry. Those arrows are older than your grandmother’s knees. The real problem is the ones that don’t look broken.” He tested the ground with his boot. Nothing. A second step and the stone beneath him gave a sharp click. With a curse, he jerked back just as a volley of darts hissed out of the walls, slicing the air where his chest had been. He turned, grinning wryly. “See? Still sharp enough to ruin my day. Maybe your grandmother’s knees too.” The

  • Chapter 67: The Sky Ride and the Queue for Trouble

Talon stepped out of the restaurant, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. The food was decent, though he still couldn’t quite tell what meat he had been chewing. He hoped it wasn’t rat. At least the bread wasn’t trying to break my teeth, he thought. That was already leagues better than the taverns back on the Lye Continent. The streets were busy now, with groups of people in matching gear moving about. From their weapons and the way they carried themselves, he could tell they were mercenaries. Some wore armor with brass studs, others had odd gear strapped to their backs—like a cross between a barrel and a kettle with pipes jutting out. Talon gave it a long look before muttering, “Either that’s a portable brewery or a bomb. Either way, not something I want near me if it leaks.” He spotted a familiar group—the same mercenaries he’d overheard in the restaurant talking about the ruins. They seemed more approachable than the others, so Talon figured this wa

  • Chapter 66: The Dead Man’s Lands

Talon walked along the cobblestone road, the stones uneven under his boots, until the path dipped and the town below came into view. At first glance, it had the same feel as the bigger cities back home: walls, chimneys, bustling streets. But the longer he stared, the more he realized he had never seen anything like it. A tall tower stood in the center, not for defense, but covered in massive wheels and gears that turned endlessly, clattering with the precision of clockwork. The noise was steady, like a war drum in the distance. He blinked, trying to make sense of it. That alone was enough to make Talon pause; back home, even in the great capitals, this sort of structure simply didn’t exist.“Great,” he muttered, running a hand through his hair. “First thing I see in this world is a flying kettle, and now there’s a building-sized one powering the town. Definitely not Bluefeather anymore.”After staring for a fair bit more, he began thinking of what the tower could be.“Some sort of mi

  • Chapter 65: The Envoy and the Departure

The ground of Ar’dazkraal cracked and smoked under Edward’s boots. He had walked battlefields before, but this land itself felt like one, as if it had never known peace. Volcanic ash hung heavy in the air, mixing with the sulfurous stench of molten rock flowing through distant rifts. Every step he took reminded him that this was not a place humans—or even most vampires—would dare to tread. It was the natural domain of demons.Edward recognized the work of demon terraforming by just glancing around. At the edge of a blackened plateau, soldiers waited. Almost no different from humans, if not for their colored skin and racial traits, the demons parted as Edward advanced. Their yellow eyes followed him with a mix of suspicion and hunger, but none dared interfere. At the far end of the plate

  • Chapter 64: Beyond One’s Limits

The Dimensional Corridor was chaos. The distorted void hissed and warped, as though reality itself had torn open and bled shadows. Edward and the two surviving vampires flew out of the rift guarded by Francis. The smell of scorched flesh and dimensional residue clung around them.Francis walked through them without slowing. His cold gaze swept over the survivors—pathetic, broken, yet still alive. He paused only once, looking toward the abyssal tear, contemplating whether to let it snap shut or to dash into it and find Veyra himself.Edward knelt before him, his body trembling with exhaustion, his arm barely attached. “Your Grace… Lady Veyra escaped.”Francis said nothing for a long moment. The tension was worse than anger. When he finally spoke, his voice was measured, but each word cut deep. “Our prey walked into death’s maw and came out breathing. You call that a hunt?”No one dared to answer.Francis ordered. “Tend to your wounds—what remains of your strength will be needed soon.”
