Chapter 4: Divorce

Hearing his words, Silvia paused on the other end of the phone, as if her mind needed a moment to process his words.

"Divorce? Are you crazy? I'm three months pregnant, and I'll give birth to our child in the next six months! You want your own flesh and blood to grow up in a broken home? How selfish can a man be?! Do you even hear yourself right now?"

"Uhm, Silvia..." Felix drawled lazily. "You're about to be promoted to manage the other branch of Star Corporation out of the city, right?"

"And it was Davidson who recommended you, right? I also heard Davidson is about to be promoted from director to managing director. I wonder... would the two of you still be climbing so beautifully if everyone found out you're adulterers?"

"Wha... What do you mean by that?" Silvia's usual aloof voice trembled.

"You don't need to know how I found out. Will you come to the divorce court right now? Yes or no?"

"... I will."

"Now you're talking. Come as fast as you can. I'll be waiting."

Felix looked at his watch. 9:04 AM.

He had time travel back around eight, reached the company by eight-thirty, spent twenty-some minutes taking pictures with Vanessa, and now here he stood.

Not even two hours since his rebirth, and he had already quit his job, emptied his boss's wallet, and about to file for divorce.

With that done, Felix waved down a taxi heading to the courthouse four streets away.

He had been waiting barely five minutes after stepping out of the taxi, when a car pulled up and Silvia stepped out.

She stood about 1.66 meters tall, fit, her silver-colored hair catching the sunlight, her skin fair and carefully maintained.

Her stomach was still flat, as if the pregnancy was nothing but a rumor she carried for convenience.

And wrapped around her like a coat was that familiar aloof, arrogant aura, the one that used to make his heart race.

Now it only made him feel disdain.

This was the woman he had once been madly in love with?

How foolish had the old him been?

He had fallen for her because he thought she was upright and blunt, a woman who never bent her head to curry favor with power right from birth.

But looking at her now, he knew better. She had bent a great deal more than her head for the people whose power she now enjoyed.

Just thinking about it was disgusting.

Silvia, meanwhile, was staring at him, her brows scrunched in confusion and bewilderment.

How does Felix know about Davidson?

When did he find out?

And why... why is he looking at me like that?

It was the way a man looks at a dirty stranger. A look of pure disgust. Somehow that look angered her more than anything he had said.

"Felix. You do know a divorce can take thirty days, even two months to finalize, right? Especially with the assets involved." Her voice softened, sweet in the way she only ever was when she wanted something.

"Besides, whatever you heard about me is a lie. This child is yours. Or are you going to deny we slept together three months ago? Dad and my sister have always treated you well. Abandoning this family out of nowhere won't do any of our reputations any good."

She stepped closer, her tone turning almost pitying.

"I know what this is really about. You're jealous of Davidson because he's successful and you're not. You've always had this petty, small-minded streak. Fine. I forgive you for today. Come home, and we'll pretend this little tantrum never happened."

Inwardly, Silvia was seething. She knew how to handle Felix. He threw tantrums like a child whenever he saw her with another man, even pretended he wanted to leave. But one or two sweet words and he came crawling back happy.

This time would be no different. She would deal with him properly later for wasting her time.

Felix listened with growing amusement, and when she finished, he gave her a slow, polite clap.

"Bravo. Truly. You cheated, you lied about the child, and somehow in your head it all becomes my jealousy and my tantrum. That is a level of mental gymnastics I could never afford. Olympic athletes would file for bankruptcy."

His smile faded. "And reputation? Silvia, the only thing in this city dirtier than your reputation is your bedsheets. At least bedsheets can be washed."

"You...!" Her face went white, then red.

"Here's my offer, since you're so worried about the assets." Felix turned toward the courthouse doors.

"I don't want the house. I don't want the car. I don't want a single thing that has ever been touched by your family's hands. I just want the divorce. Think of it as charity. You're used to taking from me anyway. Consider this the last thing I'll ever give you."

Those words cut Silvia off so completely that she could only grit her teeth and follow him inside.

---

The wait was short. When their turn came, Felix explained everything calmly and clearly, and Silvia, cornered, agreed to it all.

The mediator, a middle-aged woman with kind eyes, tried her best. She urged them to take the standard thirty-day cooling-off period, to think of the child, of how many couples walked back through those doors and fixed things.

Felix simply pointed out, in the same calm voice, that his wife was carrying another man's child and that the thirty days would be spent with his wife's lover recommending her for promotions at the company they both worked at.

The mediator looked at Silvia. Silvia looked at the floor in anger.

The agreement was finalized.

From nine in the morning until five in the evening, they sat in that courthouse. When Felix finally walked out, he stretched his arms wide and yawned, then lifted his head to watch the sun sinking toward the rooftops.

And he smiled.

Free. Officially, legally free.

Now he could finally put to use the one piece of future knowledge that could make him real money. It was not stocks. It was not property. It was the FIFA World Cup, still in progress. The final would be played tomorrow, France against Spain.

In his past life Felix had not been much of a football fan, but he remembered his colleagues celebrating for days. Spain had beaten France, two goals to none.

With the money sitting in his account, he planned to spread cash across every major betting platform and put it all on that single match.

Who told him to be reborn without the encyclopedic future knowledge most main characters in novels enjoyed? He would take what he had and squeeze it dry.

Chuckling, he saw Silvia stepping out of the courthouse doors in a daze, her eyes searching for him. He had absolutely no interest in hearing whatever came next, so he simply walked away and raised a hand for a taxi.

Silvia watched the man she had come to meet turn his back on her and climb into a cab like she was a stranger on the street. Her eyes turned dark with anger.

"You useless piece of shit," she hissed under her breath. "You think you can just walk away? I'll make your life a misery."

She immediately pulled out her phone and dialed. "Hello, Dad? Listen to me. I want every single one of Felix's belongings thrown out of the house in the next ten minutes. I want him to see all of it sitting on the curb before he even reaches the street. Do not let him inside. Not one step. Yes. Let the trash go live in his dilapidated dead parents' house, where trash belongs."
