Chapter 3: The Price of Silence

Vanessa did not want to admit it. Even with evidence slapped on the table, she would not admit it.

Felix read the look in her eyes and knew he had to play the main card.

So, with a fake sigh of pity, he added, "I really am jealous of you and Davidson. Managing to steal 10.5 million dollars together even though our company is not even A-list, and still not leaving a single trace? You two are amazing."

He paused, watching her body jolt in shock, then continued, "Oh, I got that information from someone mysterious. I wonder... what would happen if I sent it to the group chat?"

He said the last words with a smirk. In truth, he was lying. He did not have that information yet in this life. It was all a play on words to break her defense.

But to Vanessa, it felt like the end of the world. Her mind ran countless simulations, wondering how Felix had found out about the scandal and the marriage.

"We hid our relationship so well. How did he notice?"

"Where did we slip up? The transactions? The way we communicate in the office?"

At that moment, it felt like everything was crumbling right before her eyes.

Seeing her trembling expression, Felix immediately threw out a carrot. "There is a way, though. You help me, and I keep my mouth shut."

"You could help me?" Vanessa's eyes widened, but then caution crept back in. Nothing about this help would be free.

"Yes, I will help you," Felix nodded with a smile, reaching back to close the door. Vanessa grew even more cautious. "On one condition. You answer my questions."

She took a deep breath. She knew Felix was the only one who could... not help, exactly, but hold his tongue. "I will answer."

"Good. Now we are in the same boat." Felix smiled. His phone had been recording this entire conversation.

"First. Did you and your so-called husband keep your money in the same account or separate ones? Second, do the two of you live at separate addresses? And third... you will give me lots of money. Lots of it."

"No, we do not keep our money in the same place." Vanessa answered carefully after a deep contemplation.

"In fact, I send him proposals for the company with the costs exaggerated. He pretends not to notice, signs them, and I hide what I skim from the top. Then he submits business plans and funding requests to the department, which pass through me. I sign them, pretending not to notice, and he uses the money."

Felix almost laughed. A married couple laundering company money past each other and calling it teamwork. Truly a match made in heaven.

"As for living together... we sometimes stay at the same place on weekends only. Victorious Street."

Felix's smile falter a bit. Victorious Street.

The street where he lived with his so-called wife, Silvia. No wonder those two were so close. Who knew how many times she had secretly visited the house and where it was even located, her father must have known already.

The thought made his hands tremble. He took a deep breath, steadied himself, and finally spoke. "Now, let's make a video. You will sit on my lap and look at me like a lover. Put your whole heart into it."

Vanessa trembled. If she gave in to this, it was over. With those pictures, Felix would have total control over her. Desperate, she tried to buy her way out.

"I can give you anything. I own two estates and a trucking company I invested in. I... I can give you shares. Ten percent... no, forty percent? Forty-five?"

"You know what I like about you, Mrs. Richard?" Felix's lips curved. "You negotiate against yourself. Saves me the trouble."

He let the silence stretch, then continued, "Good. You will sit on my lap while I take pictures of us together. Don't worry, I won't post them. Then you will transfer forty-five percent to me, sell them out, and give me all the liquidity. But of course..."

He put on a fake, innocent look. "You can always refuse. It's just that my mouth runs a little wild when people don't fulfill their agreements."

Vanessa was silent for a long moment. After a prolonged internal struggle, she finally gave in. "Fine. I will do it, if you keep to your side of the agreement."

"Good." Felix smiled. "Now come over here. Sit on my lap, look at me with a smile like I'm your secret lover. You are a businesswoman. You are good at pretending. Don't make this look artificial."

---

Twenty-five minutes later, Felix left the office looking thoroughly satisfied, having taken a large collection of romantic, we-are-secret-lovers pictures.

Behind him, Vanessa sat at her desk with a blank expression and slightly disheveled clothes.

Walking through the main floor, he passed Davidson standing over an employee's desk, berating him about formatting errors.

Davidson looked up. Their eyes met, and the man clearly had not forgotten the morning. He strode over arrogantly.

"Felix. I just had my secretary send twenty reports to your desk. Go over all of them within five hours. Correct them, make copies, send them to me, save some in the docs, forward them to our clients, and also..."

"Boss, calm down." Felix did not let him finish. He casually draped an arm over Davidson's shoulder with a smile, and everyone in the office froze. Even Davidson froze.

"Boss, I told you something earlier, didn't I?" Felix asked with an innocent look.

"What is that?" Davidson replied, doubtful.

"You mean I forgot to tell you?" Felix slapped his own forehead dramatically. "Oh, right. Actually, I'm quitting."

Davidson stared at him. "..."

"You can't just quit! Do you think this company is a..."

"Fantastic. We agree on something." Felix patted his shoulder and started walking toward the exit.

"That saves me the paperwork. Best of luck with the reports, boss. I'm sure whoever you scream at next will appreciate the opportunity."

He walked out without looking back, leaving Davidson standing in the middle of the office, his face cycling through three shades of red while forty employees pretended very hard to be busy.

---

Felix had not even been outside the company for five minutes when his phone buzzed with an alert. Over 1.3 million dollars had just landed in his account, followed by a message.

[This is all the liquidity I have right now. Give me at least five days to convert the assets and shares into liquidity and transfer your share.]

Seeing this, Felix could not help but smile. Five days. The safe house could wait five days. Probably.

Then his phone rang. Seeing the caller's name, his expression turned cold, and he picked up. "Silvia..."

"Felix? What the hell is wrong with you? You quit your job?! Are you mad?! I'm three months pregnant with our child, and you think this is the right time to behave childishly?!"

Hearing her words, Felix let out a dark chuckle.

Three months pregnant? Our child? In his past life he thought it really was their child. Although the child didn't even survive the first week of the apocalypse and died. But Silvia didn't even let him buried the child and instead let Davidson did it.

Reborn now he knew exactly why... That wasn't his child.

"Silvia... I want Divorce."
