The automatic glass doors slid open.

A wave of cool air washed over Fred as he stepped into the clothing store, carrying with it the faint scent of cedarwood, fresh fabric, and expensive cologne. Soft jazz drifted from hidden speakers overhead, creating an atmosphere that felt worlds away from the chaos waiting outside.

For a moment, he simply stood there.

His reflection stared back at him from a polished mirror near the entrance. His shirt was torn near the shoulder. Mud stained his trousers.

His split lip had darkened into a deep purple bruise, and his rain-soaked hair remained disheveled from the beating he had endured barely an hour earlier.

He looked less like a customer and more like someone who had wandered into the wrong place by mistake.

The countdown timer floated silently in the corner of his vision.

[Mission Remaining Time 00:20:42]

The numbers continued to fall with relentless precision. Fred swallowed hard. Every instinct urged him to turn around and leave. Fifty dollars was no longer just a number.

It represented rent that would have to wait, meals he might have to skip, and a few more fragile days before his life collapsed completely.

Almost without thinking, he brushed his fingers across the cracked smartwatch strapped to his wrist.

The tiny digital wallet icon still glowed. It was the only lifeline he had left. "If this doesn't work," he whispered to himself, "I'm finished."

Across the showroom, two sales assistants noticed him. One glanced at him before returning to arrange a rack of jackets.

The other frowned. "He looks like he just came in to escape the rain."

Her coworker shrugged. "Let him look; he can't afford anything here."

Neither of them made any effort to greet him.

Fred pretended not to hear. He had become painfully accustomed to people judging him before he ever opened his mouth.

Money changed the way strangers looked at you, or in his case, the way they deliberately avoided looking at all.

Taking a slow breath, he wandered deeper into the store.

The displays were elegant without being extravagant. This wasn't one of the exclusive luxury boutiques downtown. Instead, it catered to office workers looking for affordable business clothing.

It was exactly the kind of place he needed. He wasn't searching for luxury. He was searching for another chance.

Fred stopped in front of a rack of navy-blue suits. His fingertips brushed lightly across the sleeves as he examined the craftsmanship. The stitching was solid. The material felt durable.

The design was simple, clean, and professional. It was exactly the kind of suit someone could wear into a job interview with confidence.

A gentle voice interrupted his thoughts. "Can I help you?"

Fred turned.

A young saleswoman stood nearby. Unlike the other employees, she showed no sign of annoyance or suspicion. Her expression held nothing but polite curiosity.

The name tag pinned to her uniform read: Emma.

Fred hesitated before answering. "I'm looking for something inexpensive."

Emma smiled warmly. "We have several options."

As she spoke, her eyes drifted to the bruise on his cheek, and her expression softened with concern. "Are you alright?"

Fred instinctively touched the cut on his lip. "I've had a rough day."

She didn't press him for an explanation. Instead, she simply nodded. "Then let's make at least one part of today a little easier."

The quiet kindness in her voice caught him completely off guard.

Without another word, Emma led him toward a clearance section tucked away near the back of the store, where most customers rarely bothered to look.

Fred immediately felt more comfortable there. She pulled out several suits for him to examine. "This one is on sale."

She checked the price tag. "Sixty-eight dollars."

Fred gave a quiet shake of his head. "That's still more than I can spend."

Emma continued searching.

After a moment, she held up another suit. "This one's fifty-nine."

Fred's expression remained apologetic. "Still too much."

The countdown continued. 00:15:16

His heartbeat grew a little faster. Time was slipping away far too quickly. Emma frowned thoughtfully before glancing toward another rack. "There might be one left."

She disappeared around the corner.

A few moments later, she returned carrying a neatly folded navy-blue suit. "It's from last season's collection," she explained. "The store has been trying to clear out the remaining inventory."

She looked down at the price tag.

A small smile appeared on her face. "This one is exactly fifty dollars."

Fred froze.

Exactly, not forty-nine, not fifty-one. Exactly fifty dollars. The coincidence felt almost impossible. Inside his mind, the System chimed softly.

[Mission Item Located.]

Fred felt his pulse skip. "You..." he murmured under his breath.

Emma tilted her head. "Sorry?"

He quickly shook his head. "Nothing."

Carefully, he accepted the suit. The fabric wasn't luxurious. It wasn't designer, but it was clean, well-tailored, and respectable.

For reasons he couldn't fully explain, holding it in his hands made him feel like a human being again instead of a man the world had already discarded.

As Emma carried the folded suit toward the register, another employee walked past. It was the same woman who had ignored him when he entered.

She glanced at Fred's worn shoes before leaning toward her coworker. Although she lowered her voice, her whisper wasn't nearly as quiet as she imagined. "He's probably just looking."

Emma frowned. "He's buying something."

The woman let out an unconvinced laugh. "We'll see."

Fred heard every word. He didn't react. There had been a time when comments like those would have ruined his entire day. Compared to losing Chloe, compared to losing his job, compared to lying beaten and bleeding in a filthy alley.

Those careless remarks barely registered anymore.

Even so, a small part of him couldn't help wondering whether people would ever stop measuring someone's worth by appearances alone.

Emma carefully folded the suit and placed it on the checkout counter. The elderly cashier adjusted his glasses before looking at the register. "That comes to exactly fifty dollars."

Fred stared at the total displayed on the payment screen. $50.00

After this purchase, he would have less than twenty dollars left to his name; his fingers hovered over the cracked smartwatch.

The countdown continued its relentless march. 00:09:03

The cashier noticed his hesitation. "First interview?"

Fred looked up in confusion. "What?"

The old man smiled kindly. "You've been staring at that suit for almost five minutes."

He chuckled. "It happens all the time."

"Big interview coming up?"

Fred managed a tired smile. "...Hopefully."

The cashier nodded knowingly. "I've been standing behind this register for twenty-seven years," he said. "During that time, I've learned something."

Fred looked at him with quiet curiosity. "People don't buy suits because of who they are."

He paused before continuing. "They buy them because of who they're trying to become."

The words lingered in the air.

Emma smiled quietly. "I think he's right."

Fred lowered his eyes to the payment screen once more. If he completed this purchase, he would have less than twenty dollars left.

If he trusted the impossible System, perhaps he would gain something far more valuable.

Richard's cruel words echoed through his mind. "People like you are replaceable."

Then Chloe's voice returned. "Love doesn't pay bills, Fred."

The mysterious text message followed. "Tomorrow changes everything."

Finally, the System's calm declaration surfaced once again. "Opportunity belongs to those willing to spend."

Fred closed his eyes for a brief moment. When he opened them again, every trace of hesitation had disappeared.

Without another word, he raised his wrist over the payment terminal; a soft beep echoed through the quiet store.

Payment Approved.

At that exact instant, the blue interface burst across his vision in a brilliant flash of light.

[Mission Complete.]

[Evaluating Host...]

[Cashback Reward Being Generated...]

Fred's heart pounded against his ribs, the lights inside the store flickered once before settling again, and an uncanny stillness seemed to settle over everything around him.

He stood frozen behind the checkout counter, staring at the glowing words as the System processed his reward.

Whatever happened next would determine whether he had just made the worst decision of his life...

or the best one.
