Chapter 1: The Price of Breath

The sky above the ruins was the color of a bruised lung, choked with ash and the lingering smog of a world that had long since given up on breathing. Lucas Wijaya blinked, his eyelashes heavy with grit, and tried to push himself up. His palms scraped against jagged rebar, and the sensation was a white-hot spike through his nerves.

"Ugh, what the hell?" Lucas groaned, his voice raspy and thin, disappearing into the vast, hollow echo of the crater.

He looked around. Nothing but steel skeletons and crumbled concrete. The city—or what was left of it—stretched out like a graveyard for giants. He tried to remember how he’d gotten here, but his brain felt like it had been scrubbed clean with sandpaper.

"Okay, Lucas, just breathe," he muttered to himself, clutching his abdomen. "Think. Last thing I remember was... the light. And the screen. That damned screen."

A holographic notification still hovered in the periphery of his vision, ghostly and translucent.

[SYSTEM DEBT INCURRED: 1,000,000 ESSENCE CREDITS.]

[WARNING: FAILURE TO REPAY WILL RESULT IN CELLULAR DISINTEGRATION.]

"Debt? What kind of sick joke is this?" he whispered, his eyes darting across the desolate street.

A ragged, wet wheezing sound broke the silence. Lucas froze. He turned his head slowly, tracking the noise to a mound of debris twenty feet away. A man—or what used to be a man—was pinned beneath a fallen support beam. His chest was caved in, his skin a sickly, pallid gray.

Lucas scrambled over, his heart hammering against his ribs. He hovered over the stranger. The man’s eyes were bloodshot, pleading.

"Help... please..." the man rasped, spitting up blood.

"Hey, stay with me, man. Just keep breathing," Lucas said, his hands hovering over the man’s crushed chest.

"It’s over... I’m done, kid," the stranger wheezed.

"No, don't say that. Just... hang on." Lucas didn't know what he was doing, but a strange warmth began to prickle behind his eyes, flowing down his arms like liquid fire. He touched the man’s torn shirt. "I’m going to try something, okay? Just shut your eyes."

"What are you—"

Lucas didn't wait. He willed the warmth into his palms. The air hummed with a metallic ozone smell. Beneath his fingers, the man’s ruined flesh began to knit together. It was grotesque, beautiful, and impossible. The ribs cracked back into place with a sickening pop, the skin sealing over the hematoma like a closing zipper.

The stranger gasped, his eyes flying open. "You... how did you—"

Suddenly, Lucas felt a phantom impact. He screamed as his own chest erupted in blinding, agonizing pressure. He collapsed, clutching his sternum as if a sledgehammer had struck him.

"Oh god! Oh no, no, no!" Lucas choked out, gasping for air that wouldn't reach his lungs.

The stranger sat up, looking at his own healed chest with wide, terrified eyes. "You... you took it? You took the damage?"

"It... it feels like I’m breaking," Lucas wheezed, curling into a fetal ball in the dirt. Every heartbeat sent a fresh jolt of agony through his torso, mimicking the exact trauma he’d just erased from the other man.

"Kid, you're crazy," the stranger said, scrambling to his feet. He looked down at Lucas, his face twisted in a mix of awe and greed. "You're a healer? Do you have any idea what you're worth? The syndicates would pay a fortune for someone like you."

"Get away..." Lucas groaned, his vision blurring. "Just get out of here."

"I should take you with me," the man muttered, reaching for Lucas’s shoulder.

"I said... back off!" Lucas shoved him away with a burst of frantic adrenaline, his pain-sharpened senses picking up a low, rhythmic thumping in the distance.

"Wait, do you hear that?" the stranger whispered, his bravado vanishing.

Lucas tilted his head. It was the sound of heavy boots and metal scraping against metal. Scavengers.

"They're coming," Lucas hissed, dragging himself behind a slab of concrete. "Go, before they see us. Move!"

The man didn't need to be told twice. He sprinted off into the labyrinth of ruins, leaving Lucas alone in the dark.

Lucas forced himself to remain motionless. He pressed his back against the cold, jagged slab, his breath coming in shallow, shuddering gasps. The pain in his chest was a dull, rhythmic throb now, a constant reminder of the System’s tax.

If I heal someone, I pay the price, he thought, his teeth gritted so hard his jaw ached. That’s the debt. That’s the catch.

The scavengers drew closer. He could hear their voices now, low and harsh, filled with the casual cruelty of people who survived by picking the bones of the dead.

"I’m telling you, I smelled blood over here," one of them growled.

"Keep your head down, Jax. The Sector Guards are patrolling the perimeter," another replied.

Lucas squeezed his eyes shut, trying to sink into the shadows. He reached out to the System, begging for it to stop, for the pain to fade, but it only blinked a taunting message in his mind: [DEBT OUTSTANDING. PAIN IS THE INTEREST.]

He felt sick. He felt small. But beneath the fear, a cold, hard knot of resolve began to form in his gut. He wasn't going to die here, not as a battery for a sadistic magic system, and not at the hands of some bottom-feeding scavengers.

He gripped a piece of broken rebar, his knuckles white. If they came around the corner, he’d make them pay for every inch of the distance he had to crawl.

The voices stopped right on the other side of his slab.

"Anything?"

"Nothing but rubble. Must have been a trick of the wind."

"Let's move. There’s a better haul toward the train station."

Lucas let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. He waited, counting the seconds, until the crunch of boots grew faint and finally vanished into the whistling wind. He slumped forward, his forehead resting against the dirt. He was exhausted, broken, and completely alone.

"Well, Lucas," he whispered to the silence, his voice trembling. "That was almost a very short life."

He tried to push himself up, but his muscles screamed in protest. He hadn't even fully stood when a shadow fell across him—not a shadow cast by the setting sun, but a silhouette of a person standing directly behind him.

He froze. He hadn't heard a single footstep. Whoever was standing there was fast, silent, and entirely too close for comfort.

"You're a long way from home, aren't you, little spark?" a voice asked. It was cool, melodic, and held an edge that made the hair on the back of Lucas’s neck stand up.

Lucas turned his head slowly, looking up.

A woman stood over him. She was dressed in tactical gear that looked brand new compared to the rags of the city, and her eyes—a striking, unnatural shade of violet—seemed to see right through his fear.

She looked at him with an expression of mild, detached curiosity, like someone examining a rare bug pinned to a board.

"I heard about a tremor in the mana flow," she said, tapping a gloved finger against her chin. "But I didn't expect a boy to be the source. Tell me, Lucas Wijaya, are you planning on staying in the dirt, or are you going to stand up and face your debt?"

Lucas’s jaw dropped. "How do you know my name?"

The woman tilted her head, a ghost of a smile playing on her lips.

"I’m Valentina," she said, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. "And I’m the only reason you haven't been bled dry by the scavengers yet. Now, are you coming, or do I have to drag you?"
