125. A Confused Board
She breathed once."In that case," she said, "What my client is owed is not a continued review. What he is owed is a public vindication. A formal apology issued to the full student body, the same audience that witnessed his public dismissal, restoring his name and his record. The reinstatement of his scholarship under its original terms. And proper compensation for the harm done to his reputation, his academic standing, and his wellbeing."She looked at the panel. Left to right. Each face."If this committee is not prepared to address those points today," she said, "Then I will be filing a civil suit against Virell Academy, the disciplinary committee, the scholarship board, and the individuals responsible for the original investigation, by end of business Friday." She paused. "The grounds will include wrongful dismissal, breach of procedural process, defamation in a public setting, and the manufacturing and presentation of falsified evidence in a formal disciplinary proceeding."Sh
124. A Systematic Review
Jessica looked at the screen."The third thing," she said. She walked to the projector screen slowly and majestically. She stood to one side of it where both the panel and Chris could see her and the image simultaneously."The still photographs," she said. "I would like the technician to rewind the footage and play it from the beginning. Specifically, I want the committee to watch the collar of Mr Hayes's uniform jacket."Hargrove looked at the technician.A pause."Please," Jessica said pleasantly. The technician rewound. The corridor footage played again, Chris entering frame, moving toward the staff common room, going in."Watch the collar," Jessica said.In the footage, the collar lay flat and even. Both sides of the blazer's lapel were sitting correctly, and the shirt collar beneath it was visible and neat."Now stop," Jessica said. "Hold it there."The technician froze the footage."Now bring up the still photograph," Jessica said. "The one from the staff common room interior."
123. Objections
The technician pressed play. The room darkened slightly as the projector took over; the overhead lights were still on but the screen drew attention. The first footage began.A corridor. Virell Academy's east wing, Chris recognised it immediately, the stretch of hallway between the staff common room and the stairwell that connected to the scholarship wing. The camera angle was the overhead type, wide-lens, the kind that captured everything within its arc in the slightly distorted way of fisheye surveillance.A figure entered the frame from the left.Christopher Hayes. Navy blazer, school bag on his shoulder, unhurried. He moved down the corridor at a natural pace, stopped outside the staff common room door, knocked twice, pushed it open, and went in.The interior footage cut in immediately after, a different camera, this one mounted in the upper corner of the staff common room itself. The image quality was worse here. Grainier. The edges of the frame blurred into a soft vignette that
122. No Documentation
The whispering started immediately. This was the tight, slightly panicked conference of people who had not anticipated this particular challenge and were now trying to find a way around it in under two minutes.Professionalism had suddenly left the chat as Hargrove and his panel struggled to find proper answers to Jessica’s questions.Hargrove leaned toward the academic secretary on his left. She whispered something back, her eyes moving to the document in front of her as if the answer might be found in it if she looked long enough. Fowler leaned in from the right. The other two members pulled toward the centre. The five of them formed a cluster that was trying to be a private conversation and was failing because the room was not big enough and the silence around them was too complete.Chris watched the scenes silently, heaving a sigh of reliefHe kept his face still, watching as though he was not paying attention, which was from the periphery with full attention.Jessica sat beside
121. A Lawyer in the Room
The technician's hand was still on the keyboard when Jessica raised hers. She raised her hand calmly, which drew the attention of the members almost immediately. They all looked in her direction. Even the technician paused.Hargrove looked at her."Ms. Morgan.""Thank you." She set her pen down on the notepad. "Before the footage is presented, I would like to establish something about the original investigation. It will help the committee understand the context of our response to the evidence."Hargrove's expression didn't change. "Go ahead."Jessica looked at the panel. All five of them. She looked at each face in turn, not quickly, the way a person looks when they want the room to know they're paying attention to everyone in it.Then she looked back at Hargrove."In reviewing the documentation provided ahead of today's hearing," she said, "I noticed that throughout the original investigation, only one student was named as a suspect. Christopher Hayes." She paused. "Not as the pri

Hargrove found his voice first among the five."Excuse me." He looked at Jessica directly, the composed authority of a man reclaiming ground. "Can I help you? I think you may have the wrong room. Are you looking to see someone?" He questioned herJessica didn't look at him the way people look at things they are uncertain about. She looked at him the way she looked at everything, with full attention, without any of the softness that usually accompanied an apology."I have the right room," she said pleasantly. "Conference room B, Virell Academy. Disciplinary committee review hearing for Christopher Hayes." She moved to stand beside Chris's chair. "I am Jessica Morgan of SanCole Legal Associates. I am Mr Hayes's legal representative." She finished and forged a smileThe committee table absorbed it in collective stillness. One of the members, a woman on Hargrove's left whose name Chris knew from Sandra's files as the committee's academic secretary, opened her mouth slightly and closed
