Ambrose's birthday

Damon enthusiastically cleaned the restaurant, smiling and humming a song as he mopped. He was oblivious to the weird gaze his colleagues were giving him. All he could think of was seeing his girlfriend at the end of the day and spending quality time with her

Damon didn't usually have a positive attitude towards his job. He worked only because he had to. However, that day was a special day. It was his girlfriend's birthday. He planned to take her out on a dinner date. Although it wasn't much, that was the best he could afford

Damon is not financially buoyant. He's an orphan and is only able to survive by working multiple part-time jobs. Things weren't promising for him. The only good that ever happened to him was meeting Ambrose. She's a charming lady that caught the eyes of many men. He was only fortunate enough to have her reciprocate his feelings for her

Not once did she make Damon feel less of a man because of his financial incapability. In fact, the way in which she appreciated Damon's efforts always made him feel like he was the wealthiest man on earth

After he was done with his work for the day, he went to the jewellery shop that just opened down the street and got the best necklace he could afford

He got to Ambrose's house in a jiffy and was about to enter when he heard an unfamiliar voice. Damon peeped through the opened space of the door and saw a man in Ambrose's living room. He was dressed casually in a green shirt and black trousers

" Ambrose, how much more do I need to do to make you understand that I love you? Tell me, what do you want? I will give it to you"

The man took a few steps forward when he saw that Ambrose wasn't pushing him away "I can give you everything you ever wanted. You're a queen and need to be treated like one. With me by your side, you wouldn't need to worry about anything for the rest of your life"

Damon who was watching everything unfold couldn't help but feel a heavy feeling weighing down on his chest. He was nervous when Ambrose didn't stop Baron from advancing. Didn't that mean she was approving him?

Baron had the same thought as Damon. He thought Ambrose was keeping quiet because she agreed. With that thought in mind, he went closer to her and intended to hold her hands.

Ambrose slapped his hand away and took a few steps backwards, increasing the distance between them. She twisted her face in disgust and replied disdainfully " I've told you several times. I have a boyfriend whom I love very much and have no intention of leaving"

Baron couldn't believe there was any girl out there who could resist him especially when he was persistently chasing after her. He was wealthy and was not bad-looking. A lot of girls would beg to get on his bed. Ambrose was the only girl that had proven difficult for him. He shook himself back to reality and bursted out "You mean that low-life peasant that can barely afford to keep his life together? What does he have that I don't?"

"Everything! He is charismatic and a proper gentleman. He has my best interest at heart and does everything possible to make me happy. He respects my opinion and would go extra miles for me. And also, he has a great body!" Ambrose glared at him. If looks could kill, Baron would be six feet beneath the earth." Which normal lady would leave a man like that for you? You think the whole world revolves around you and everyone has to bend to your commands. Listen to me. Your entire existence can't compare to half of Damon's fingertip"

Baron was burning in rage. His entire face was red and his veins looked like they would burst out of his flesh any second. Meanwhile, Damon was tearing up internally in ecstasy. He was initially scared that Ambrose would fall for Baron's sweet words and wealth and leave him. But after hearing her stand up for him, he couldn't help but feel giddy

" Everything you mentioned is useless without money involved. He's only a filthy orphan who survives by cleaning toilets and running errands. If you choose to stay with him, that means you're accepting to stay in poverty for the rest of your life! Whereas I can provide you with everything you desire "As Baron spoke, he took rapid steps toward Ambrose and grabbed her by the wrists forcefully and attempted to kiss her

In a flash, Damon was already in front of Ambrose. He grabbed Baron by the collar and gave him a ghastly punch. Baron wiped the blood at the corner of his mouth and launched at Damon.

Just like that, the two began fighting. No amount of Ambrose's yelling and attempts to break them up was working.

Damon's sturdy body was born out of the hardship and struggle he had been through. Thus, he was quite muscular and inflicted more injuries on Baron than Baron did on him

After the two fought till they panted, they finally separated.

"Don't you dare lay your hands on her ever again, you bastard!" Damon stood in front of Ambrose as if protecting her and yelled at Baron. Even Ambrose was quite shocked at Damon's outburst. It was the first time he had let his emotions fly so freely.

Baron sniffled and yelled" You dare to hit me? You asked for trouble and you'll get it. I won't be benevolent with you and let this slide " He left afterwards

Damon immediately turned to Ambrose and scrutinised her" Are you okay? "

Ambrose held his cold palms that were on her face and pulled her brows together" Why did you pick up a fight with him? Look at you, you're terribly injured "She dragged him to sit on the couch and brought out an ice pack from the fridge

Damon's heavy breaths slightly calmed down. He replied" If I didn't, God only knows what that bastard would have done to you"

She gently pressed the ice on the places where he was injured. Damon didn't say a word. He just sat there with pursed lips. He was affected by what Baron said. It was true that he only survived through his janitorial works and sorts. If only he had a little wealth, maybe then he wouldn't be a smear on Ambrose's name.

He wished he could be better, for her sake

As if sensing Damon's thoughts, Ambrose placed her left palm on his cheek and said softly " Don't let the things Baron said get to you. You're a strong and hardworking man, that's how I see you"

Damon replied with a slight nod

Ambrose spread her lips into a little smile. She looked at Damon and said "That was the first time I've ever seen you that angry. It's nice to see you stand up for me" She dropped her smile and wagged her finger at him "But, that doesn't mean I allow you to beat someone up. This is the only time I'll let it slide"

Damon smiled and nodded. Like a switch was turned on inside his head, he took out a red box from his pocket and stretched it to Ambrose "I'm so sorry babe. Happy 22nd birthday"

Ambrose took the box and opened it. Damon took the necklace and helped her put it on. It had a simple design. It was a golden necklace with clasped fingers as the pendant. She touched it and smiled " Thank you, I love it. I promise never to take it off"

Damon held her hand and looked deep into her eyes " You may not know this, but you're the biggest blessing that'll ever happen to me. We'll walk this road of life together till our hair turns grey and till we die. And then we'll continue our journey in the afterlife. I love you so much and would love to spend the rest of your birthdays with you " Ambrose was deeply touched. They hugged each other tightly

" Oh! I have another thing planned for you. Go get ready and come down "

Ambrose went to the room and came down wearing a knee-length brownish gown with tiny straps. Her hair was packed up into a ponytail making her look more youthful

After Damon was done complimenting her, they left the house
