"Stronger than it pushed Yuki," Tommy said. "It's not testing anymore. It's committing."

"Elijah," Mei Ling said into her headset. She gave the address.

At eight-fifteen Tommy said, "Downtown. Financial district. One. It's hesitating."

Mei Ling looked at her screen. "The carrier in the financial district. I have them. Why is it hesitating?"

"The fragment might be degraded," Tommy said. "The signal from this one is different. Older. Like it's been carried longer and something about it changed."

"Ask her," Sora said.Jake looked at Rael."The four Hearts running simultaneously at full capacity creates a structural stress on the bond points," Rael said. "If you use them before those bond points stabilize the stress compounds. After three or four cycles of that the instability becomes permanent.""Permanent meaning what?" Elijah said."Meaning he loses consistent control of at least one of them," Rael said. "Permanently. The weakest bond fractures."The room was quiet."Two days," Jake said."Two days," Rael said."Fine," Jake said."Thank you," Sora said."Don't thank me," Jake said. "I'm not happy about it.""That's fine," Sora said. "You don't have to be happy about it."Elijah put his legs back over the armrest. "I think that went well," he said to Tommy."Very smoothly," Tommy said."Nobody asked you two," Jake said."We're just observing," Elijah said.***Marcus called at ten.Jake held his phone so Marcus could see the room. Nobody planned to be in the common room.People just ended up there.Tommy had made soup before anyone arrived. Three different kinds, which nobody questioned because questioning Tommy's soup decisions had never produced useful results. Hana sat down in front of a bowl and started eating without asking what was in it. Kenji sat beside her. Yuna had her laptop open but wasn't looking at the screen.Elijah was on the couch with his legs over the armrest.Harrison sat in the chair across from him. He looked at the armrest. He looked at Elijah. He said nothing. He opened his notebook, looked at the blank page, and closed it again.Elena stood at the counter beside Tommy while he stirred something. Not helping. Not talking. Just beside him.Rael was in the corner chair watching the room the way she watched everything, like she was still deciding whether to trust it.Jake came in last, got coffee, and sat down near Rael.Neither of them said anything for a minute. Tommy was explaining the b

"Six feet," Rael said. "Tommy, you're calling distance.""On it," Tommy said."Jake," Rael said. "Now you resist."Jake pushed back against the pull.It pushed back harder. The seventh wasn't patient anymore. It had been patient for three thousand years and it was done."Tommy," Jake said."Northeast," Tommy said. "About eleven o'clock if you're facing the window. Slightly high."Jake turned. Oriented. Felt the pull shift as he faced it directly."All four," Rael said. "Together. Don't chase the frequency. Open toward it and let it find you."Jake stopped trying to push the Hearts outward and just opened them instead. All four at once.It was nothing like using one or two. It was like being pulled in four directions simultaneously, each Heart with its own gravity, and the only reason he didn't come apart was the Whisperer, which had gone quiet and solid at the center of all of it, holding the connection between the four Hearts the way a hand held four separate strings.'I have you,' t

Eight minutes.Harrison coordinated it from the war room by phone while Jake was still running. Every team member called. Every carrier who'd come with them moved to designated floors. Hana's group redirected from their rest positions. Yuki and the other carriers moved to the fourth floor with Mei Ling's junior analyst running interference.Jake came through the front doors with forty seconds to spare.Sora was in the lobby. "Everyone's accounted for," she said. "Yuki and the others are on four. Hana's team is on three.""The six we didn't reach," Jake said."Mei Ling is watching their frequencies," Sora said. "If the seventh tries to activate them remotely we'll see it. There's nothing else we can do for them right now.""I know," Jake said.He looked at the front doors. At the city outside through the glass. Delivery trucks. Someone on a phone. A woman walking a dog."Tommy," Sora said.Tommy came through the stairwell door. He'd been walking down from Mei Ling's office. Hand on his

"How does it feel?""Like carrying something heavy," Jake said. "It's fine right now.""Rael said it accumulates," Sora said."I know what Rael said," Jake said."She said twelve more and then you stop for two hours," Sora said."I know what she said," Jake said."Jake," Sora said."I'm telling you when it stops being fine," Jake said. "I said I would and I will. Right now it's fine."Sora looked at him for a second. "Okay.""Okay," Jake said. The elevator opened.Rael was standing in the corridor directly outside. She looked at Jake. "Fourteen.""Yes," Jake said."Twelve more," Rael said. "Then two hours.""I know," Jake said."You're going to tell me you don't have two hours," Rael said."I don't have two hours," Jake said."If you collapse during the mass activation attempt," Rael said, "the seals break and everything we've done is mea

Mei Ling said."Not yet," Tommy said. "Give me a minute."Sixty seconds. Then: "It moved on. Dropped that carrier. Went to another one." He pointed at the map without opening his eyes. "There. Two blocks east."Mei Ling redirected the team.At nine Tommy said, "It knows I'm tracking it."Mei Ling looked at him. "How do you know that?""It's started moving differently," Tommy said. "Quieter. Like it's trying to activate carriers
