CHAPTER NINE

Richard took a deep breath, and while he was struggling to keep his eyes open, he answered the call, and spoke with a breaking tone.

“What is it, Gerald? Why are you calling me by this time?” He responded to his assistant, his voice barely above a whisper.

His eyes instinctively moved to the clock hanging on the wall, and that was when it occurred to him that the battery had been dead and no one seemed to be aware of that.

“I am so sorry for calling you this later, Boss…” William’s voice slipped through the speakers, carrying the weight of the nervousness that gripped him.

“There is an emergency that needs your urgent attention, Boss. That is exactly why I am calling…” He was done talking, but the silence that followed afterward didn’t seem like it was going to do him any good.

He took a deep breath, and after he had waited for a while, he was forced to break the silence.

“Are you still there, Master Richard?”

“Yes…” Richard gave a quick response, and then he cleared his throat, adjusting to a more comfortable posture.

“Speak, Gerald. Let me hear what this emergency is all about…” Hid voice was a little cold, but the caller knew that he had to continue no matter what.

“One of the board members is challenging your authority, Master Richard. He thinks that you are unworthy of being the CEO of Apex Development Groupconsortium.”

Instantly, Richard’s eyes lit up with instant interest, and he grunted, taking a deep breath while he tried as much as he could not to explode.

“What do you mean, Gerald?” He asked with a vibrating tone, but the other young man didn’t know what to say.

He took a deep breath, hoping to find a suitable explanation, one that wasn’t going to cause Richard to vent his spleen on him.

“His name is Jordan Buff, Boss. He is one of the investors in the Company…” He hoped that he was making sense, but yet again, Richard had gone silence, causing the suspense hanging in the air to take over once again.

“And?” Richard broke the silence just when Gerald thought that he was not going to say any other thing, causing him to clear his throat.

“He is one of the biggest business moguls in the country, Boss. I am afraid that he may be able to convince everyone that you are truly unworthy…” Gerald lamented, but it didn’t seem like he was going to be getting the kind of response he was expecting.

“Boss?” He called out, but there was no response.

“Are you still there?” He added, taking a deep breath.

“Yes…” Richard nodded almost immediately, and then he cleared his throat.

“I am still here, Gerald…” He cleared his throat again, and when he was finally ready to  speak, he continued with a deep tone.

“This Jordan Buff you speak of, Gerald. What exactly does he want?”

“I can’t say, boss…” Gerald retorted, but he wished he could say more, prompted to take a deep breath in an attempt to get a grip on himself.

“I think he is having a secret meeting with some of those loyal to him.”

Richard’s brows furrowed way before he could get a grip on himself, his eyes wide with surprise as he was gradually getting to understand the sobriety of the situation.

“Are you sure about this, Gerald?”

“Very sure, Boss. I have a strong intel on this. Someone who is currently in the meeting with them just informed me that they are planning on how to overthrow you and put someone else in charge…”

“Someone else?” Richard muttered, then a wry smile appeared on his face.

“By someone else, I am sure they are talking about this same Jordan Buff…”

Gerald sighed heavily, expressing some of the despair that he couldn’t get rid of.

“I am afraid so, Boss…” He lamented, his voice getting heavier than it was.

“That’s not a problem, Gerald. Send me the address of the venue of this meeting. I think we are about to crash a party…” Richard’s voice broke the silence, but the other man seemed to have been rendered speechless after he heard those words.

“Did you hear me?” Richard reminded Gerald that he had given him an instruction, but it still took him a while before he could respond.

“Are you sure you are ready for this. Boss? You could be walking into a trap.” He whispered, his voice laced with uncertainty and nervousness.

Richard scoffed, shaking his head slowly.

“It is they who should be worried, Gerald. They just set a trap for themselves, and they won’t see me coming…” He was already up on his feet, adjusting his dress while he got ready to move.

“Do as I have said, Gerald. And you are also invited to the party…” He quickly ended the call and made his way out, heading straight to the road.

As soon as he saw the headlamp from the approaching taxi, he flagged it down, causing the driver to pull over.

“Where to?” The middle-aged bald man asked, pushing his head through the window.

Coincidentally, the message Richard had been expecting from Gerald popped up on the screen, causing him to show the screen to the driver.

“Please, take me to this address…” He requested politely, pushing the screen closer so that the driver could see clearly.
