YOU’RE FIRED

Owen couldn't believe his eyes.

"What is going on here?" He asked with a shaky voice. He struggled to accept the reality of what he was seeing.

Megan managed to recover from her shock and stare awkwardly at Owen while Mr Martin was frowning.

"What does it look like?" Mr Martin retorted with a snort.

"Wh... What?!" Owen stuttered at the incomprehensible response.

He hadn't ever been in this sort of situation before but he knew that at least those weren't the words that Martin was supposed to say.

"It's not what it looks like, Owen." Megan finally said. She pushed herself away from Martin's arms.

Martin didn't like how she moved from his arms so he scowled at Owen.

"You ungrateful bastard!" Martin snarled.

Owen's brain circuit paused as he couldn't believe what he had heard. "Me?" He asked.

"Is that how you're supposed to treat your boss? You have no respect and etiquette in you!" Martin shouted.

Owen felt perplexed as he looked between Megan and Martin for clarification.

Megan sighed. "You're supposed to still be at work Owen. We didn't expect you to come back this early." She said with a steady voice.

Owen just kept gazing at her in unbelief. She didn't even look like someone who was just caught cheating red handed.

"So you're skipping work early now huh?" Martin continued. "Just at the time I was considering giving you that raise that you wanted. You went ahead and did this. Even barging in without knocking."

"It's my house!" Owen yelled.

Martin laughed. "Your house? You haven't paid your rent for a year now. Why do you think you're still able to live here with your beauty?" He asked.

Owen couldn't believe his ears.

"How long has this been going on?" Owen asked, but none of them answered.

"Megan! How long have you been cheating on me?" Owen asked again with an edge in his voice. He just wanted to know at this point.

"Stop being so childish, Owen!" Megan snapped.

"Mr Martin has been seeing me for some months now and we've had fun together several times. He has even been giving me some money and just recently, he promised me that he was going to give you a raise at work.

Stop being so childish and ungrateful!" She spat.

Martin tilted his head upward and looked down on Owen with a smug and pitiful look.

Owen was at a loss for words. He felt as though the ground should open up and swallow him.

How long had he been married to his wife and she was already cheating on him? He thought she and his boss were mere friends from college.

"But you told me I was the love of your life, Megan... We exchanged vows..." Owen said with tears beginning to stream down his face. He had never felt so broken before.

"Oh please, Owen. For God's sake!

I wasn't in love with you! I was already getting old and I wanted to have my own children. You were the only option that I had but it's clear that I've made a terrible mistake marrying you."

Owen looked at her in more disbelief. As she spoke it was as though she was stabbing his heart with a sharp knife and forcing it deeper with every word.

Owen dropped on the hard floor with a plop. His fever had risen again to an alarming rate but it didn't even bother him.

He looked at Megan with bloodshot eyes that he was struggling to keep open.

Megan stood up from the bed and looked at Owen with pure disdain and disgust in her eyes.

"I didn't even know how I was supposed to break this to you in the first place. But it's good that you came at this time. I was just about getting fed up."

She pursed her lips and pointed at him arrogantly.

"You're doomed to be a rung on the street Owen. You can't ever be successful in this life. I regret ever knowing you..." She drove the wedge in and walked past Owen into the restroom.

Owen was so shocked that he was just staring blankly. He laid his eyes on Martin and some hatred began to burn in his heart towards him.

"Haha... You heard her..." Martin said with a loud chuckle.

"At first I was just curious to know the wife you married but when I saw that it was Megan, I knew I had to get a bite of that pie that I had missed during college." He confessed with a dreamy expression on his face.

Then his expression became fierce.

"Your 'wife' has made it clear that she was never in love with you. So get out of here, you're being an eyesore." He said with a commanding tone.

Owen had no words to offer. At this point, he knew that any words that he had to say would turn out to be irrelevant.

The splitting fever was still assaulting his mind but he struggled and stood up to leave. He was too ashamed to say anything. But he was also filled with rage. He closed the door behind him and exited the house.

Megan... Megan had betrayed him. Never would he have thought that she really didn't love him. He had worked to his bone so that he'll be able to provide for Megan and his unborn child...

Due to the kind of work ethic Owen had built up, Owen subconsciously headed back to his place of work. His body was screaming at him to take some rest but he discarded such thoughts.

He wanted to go back and drown himself in work so that he wouldn't have to think about what he had just experienced.

He got to the doors of the company and was about to enter when he was stopped.

"Sorry but you no longer have the right to go in." The security guard said.

Owen looked at him in confusion. "I work here..." He said. In case the guy had forgotten.

But at that moment, his phone rang and Owen picked the call. Only to hear the arrogant and disdainful voice of his boss, Mr Martin.

"Don't bother going to the company. You're fired!" Martin said and ended the call immediately after.
