Location: New Sunset City

A group of scientists led by the prestigious Doctor Elana Brown were researching an organism that was recently discovered on the inner surface of a meteorite that struck Earth.

The virus showed various characteristics that fascinated the researchers. It could adapt to almost any environmental circumstance it was placed in, from temperatures as high as 300°C to temperatures as low as -47°C.

Most importantly, it could create antibodies to protect itself from any and all foreign substances. They exposed it to many viruses and bacteria, but none proved effective against its resilience and will to survive.

The scientists believed that this organism—which they later called the Sanguine virus—could very well be the key to finding a universal cure. Doctor Elana believed it could even conquer death itself.

Scientists from different fields—biologists, genetic engineers, medical physicists, and many more—were called up to research this organism, all led by Doctor Elana.

They first conducted multiple experiments on lab rats, and after a series of tests, they finally had their first successful result.

The Sanguine virus was then introduced into the body of a chimpanzee. At first, it showed signs of severe illness, such as vomiting, excessive diarrhea, and bleeding. But after several hours, everything changed.

The illness vanished. It was as healthy as the term could possibly be defined.

They tried introducing various infections into its body, but none affected it. It produced antibodies that combated every foreign substance.

It was a wonderful day indeed. The scientists extracted the antibodies from the chimpanzee and prepared for their first human trial.

A prison inmate suffering from cancer volunteered for the experiment. Multiple high-ranking officials came to witness this miracle.

I was one of the scientists involved in the experiment.

The human was placed in a glass chamber, and the antibodies were introduced into him via injection.

At first, it looked like the experiment was a success. Multiple businessmen laughed, already seeing the profit in it. Government officials congratulated Doctor Elana for her accomplishment.

The prison inmate, who now looked completely healthy, walked around, amazed by what had just happened.

Everything was perfect... until it wasn't.

The inmate fell to the ground in pain, grabbing his stomach as if something was trying to rip its way out of him. He screamed for help at the top of his lungs.

The security personnel tried holding him down to calm the situation, until... the prisoner's stomach burst open.

Blood spewed everywhere. The prisoner reached out for the nearest person and bit straight through his neck.

Suddenly, everyone was getting infected. Chaos and panic erupted. The prisoner had transformed into a horrific monster.

Doctor Elana was immediately escorted out by her security and rushed away. The government officials fled as well.

The rest of us were left to fend for ourselves. I saw Doctor Yelena on the ground, a monster towering above her, ready to pounce.

I quickly grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and slammed it into the monster with all my strength.

"Run!" I yelled at her.

I don't know what entered me that day to make me think I could be a hero.

The monster stared at me, blood spewing from its mouth. My knees felt weak from fear, my arms shaking as I held the extinguisher.

The monster tried pouncing on me, but I quickly sprayed it right in the face. I managed to blind it just enough to escape.

I ran as fast as I could, but the door in front of me was sealed shut. The doctors who had escaped earlier had locked the doors to contain the infection. I was trapped inside.

"At least Doctor Yelena is safe," I muttered.

A stupid thing for me to say. I was about to die, and all I could think of was Doctor Yelena? I'd had a crush on her for over four years, but not once had I ever made a move. I was pathetic. Thinking sacrificing myself would buy me any credibility? What was the point if I was going to die either way?

That's when it clicked. There was a secure research lab used to keep dangerous diseases and viruses under strict isolation. Due to how lethal those infections were, the room was heavily reinforced. If I could make it there, I would be safe.

I rushed toward the research lab as fast as I could, my chest pounding while all I could hear were the screams of people being torn apart.

The lab was just ahead. I could see it. I had authorization—my handprint could open it. I was going to be safe. Maybe, if I survived, I could even ask Doctor Yelena out.

A foolish thought.

*BANG!*

I was slammed hard against the wall. An infected rushed me, slicing through my guts with its claws.

Everything went silent. I gasped for air. The monster was ready to finish me off, but almost as if life wasn't done toying with me, the floor beneath us collapsed, sending the beast plummeting into the drop below.

I used every last ounce of strength to drag myself toward the pharmacy room. It wasn't far. I was bleeding out and needed to stop the hemorrhage; the pharmacy had everything I needed. After that, I could make it to the secure lab and wait for rescue.

I finally reached the pharmacy room. As I got near the freezer where the heavy painkillers and disinfectants were kept, I collapsed.

I could feel myself slowly losing consciousness. But worst of all, I heard a loud clicking noise just outside the freezer door.

The monster had followed me.

Surely, I was going to die.

Chapter 12: The TrapIt was starting to get dark. Benson and the others were probably worried. They probably thought we were dead.Margery sat across from me in the old school bus, her knees pulled to her chest. She hadn't spoken in hours. Not since we ran from the supermarket. Not since she saw what that thing did to those men."Any plans?" she finally asked. Her voice was hoarse.I was playing with the flashlight, spinning it round and round. The bus smelled of mold and old death. Graffiti covered the windows—names, dates, messages to loved ones. I didn't read them. I didn't want to know who wrote them or what happened to them."We can't go back," Margery said. Her voice was flat. Terrified. "We can't go into the city either. We would die before reaching the shelter."She was right. But I remembered the raid with Benson and the others."It won't work. Their numbers are too great. We would get overwhelmed and killed. Going back, we might not even run into that thing. It's probably in

Chapter 11: The HuntedThe voice spoke, urging me to kill them. It wasn't just the voice—I could also feel the sanguis inside me stirring, starting to hunger again. As much as I wanted to kill these scumbags, I couldn't risk putting the shelter into any trouble with rival colonies."Hey, we just have a few supplies in here. Some torn clothes and stuff, that's all. We don't have to use violence."The guy didn't seem to believe me. "Then show me. Open up the bag and show me."Margery was getting frustrated too. "Hey. If we tell your colony representative, you're going to get into a lot of trouble for robbing a fellow colony. We're all humans here, why kill each other! The enemy is over there. The monsters. They are the enemy!"The guy walked forward and placed his gun right on Margery's forehead."Trouble? Who's gonna tell them? You?"He didn't say it directly, but I knew what he meant. He was ready to kill if it meant getting whatever we had in the bag. Resources were getting scarce, a

  • Chapter 10: the monster nest.

Chapter 10We formed parties of two and departed for New Sunset City. The coverage for the mission included the outer parts of the city—from the water and sewage pipelines, stretching all the way to Manstand Bridge.New Sunset City was an island, with only four bridges leading out of it. The colony shelters were located just west of the city, still inside the island but away from the buildings.Old warehouses, factories, and schools that were meant to be demolished for the extension of the city outwards ended up being our shelters. The same places we deemed abandoned and useless were now a safe haven.Margery and I were assigned to search through Bedrock Street. It was a scarcely populated neighborhood back then, hence it had very little sanguis activity. We started off around seven in the morning. At first, the walk there was awkward. Neither of us spoke to the other. Whenever we talked, it was always the three of us—and now, it kind of felt weird just walking the two of us.I wanted

Chapter 9I found myself standing at the top of the factory building, staring at the city. My home—the place I grew up in.All my life, that's all I knew. I was born and worked there. Now all of it was in chaos. Death lingered in every corner, and in some way, it was partially my fault.I thought to myself: if I told Benson and the others what caused the apocalypse—that I was one of the scientists who started it all—how would they react? If I told them I was a monster myself, barely managing to keep myself restrained, to keep this thing inside me restrained—how would they react? It was all the more reason why I couldn't tell them anything.I know it's wrong, but I'll have to keep lying to them. The base Doctor Elana said she was at was west of Sunset City, deep inside a rainforest. It was dangerous, but I had to go.The journey would take me days at most, on foot. I wondered when it was best to leave."Wilton!"The sudden shout of my name startled me. It was Isaac."Yo! What's up!?" I

  • Chapter 8 : A decisive Battle! Wilton vs the sanguis!

The sanguis talked. It was not fluent speech, but it talked still.I didn't know they could do that. On further inspection, I noticed this one was far different from the others.I realized why there weren't any sanguis in the building. It was because of the monster in front of me. I had just stepped into its lair. The very sight of it brought fear unto me. Its upper body was still human-like, though its skin peeled off and its ribs ripped from its body. It bared fangs, and its arms ended in claws. Its lower body was like that of a spider, with many claw-shaped legs that pierced through the very ground as it walked."You... Come... Me..."It spoke again.I immediately turned back. I wasn't foolish enough to fight it, but upon trying to run, it lunged forward, blocking the door."You... come... meeee!!"It lunged at me again. I was quick to jump away. Its claws pierced through the concrete ground like it was wet paper where it landed.I pulled out the UMP and started shooting at its fac

But it was no use.I could feel my lips getting drier. My stomach felt like it was caving in inside of me.My vision blurred and I lost all strength. I couldn't muster myself to get up.I felt like I was slowly going to sleep, and with every second that I felt that way, it felt like the monster inside of me got more and more desperate to come out.It was clear to me at that moment. If I starve, I risk letting this thing out of me.I tried getting up with all my strength, holding on to the freezer next to me for balance.Dung. Dung.
