My body felt cold, and my fingers were stiff like wood. I couldn't even make sense of what was happening. Everything was just... blurry.

*Cough. Cough. Cough.*

I felt like I was going to die. They say you see your life flash before your eyes before you die, but I didn't see anything. Things just got darker and darker over time. Maybe my life was just so meaningless that there was nothing to look back on.

My body was almost ripped in half, and my guts were spilling out. The blood wouldn't stop pouring. Surely this was the end... Or so I thought.

Suddenly, my blood was trying to leave my body. Not in the dying way. In the crawling way.

I stared at the cut on my stomach. The blood wasn't red. It was dark, almost blackish-red, and it was moving against gravity, pulling itself back into the wound, stitching the skin closed like hot wax.

*THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.*

The corrupted outside the freezer shuffled past. I could see its shadow under the door. Too many joints in its legs.

It sniffed the air. It could smell the human part of me.

"Shut up," I whispered to my arm. It wouldn't stop moving on its own, almost like it was trying to break free.

The blood stopped moving, like it heard me. I held my breath. The thing sniffed again, then dragged itself away, its spine scraping the shelves.

The sanguis was crawling on the ceiling of the pharmacy. It used to be a kid; I could tell by the backpack. Now its head was split down the middle, and both halves were sniffing for me.

It dropped, but I didn't move.

It landed on the counter and shrieked.

*Bump.*

My arm hit the wall of the freezer. It heard me.

It lunged, way too fast for me to even react, and its arm blade went straight through my stomach—this time almost fully ripping my body in half.

I felt my spine tingle.

"Ah," I said out loud. "That hurt."

It stared at me. Even monsters get confused when their prey doesn't die when struck.

My blood was pissed. I could feel it sprawling inside of me.

I didn't tell my arm to change. It just did. The dark red blood shot out of the hole in my guts, up my shoulder, and my whole right arm just... came apart.

Flesh peeled back, and my blood hardened. In half a second, I wasn't looking at a hand anymore. It was a claw.

Big, ugly, and made of clotted blood.

The sanguis tried to pull its blade out, but I grabbed it. Not out of free will—it was like my body was moving on its own.

My claw closed around its arm and squeezed. I heard bones crack that shouldn't exist.

"Grrgh. I need to heal," I muttered to myself, almost like I was begging my own body to heal me. My stomach was already closing up.

You could see the muscle stitching together—disgusting and fast, and it itched like hell.

The monster screamed and swung its other arm at my face, and I let it.

Claws raked across my cheek, down to the bone. I felt my cheek flap open.

I didn't dodge.

Why would I? I leaned into it, headbutting it with my bloody forehead.

Then I punched.

My bloody claw went through its chest like wet paper. I didn't hit any organs; there were none. Just that stringy flesh that all sanguis have inside, like tangled yarn.

I twisted.

The whole thing ripped in half. The top half went right, the bottom half went left. Blood splashed everywhere, mine and his mixed together.

My blood on the floor actually crawled back to my feet.

Gross. Still not used to that.

I stood there, my stomach steaming, my face half-healed, holding a twitching half-monster in my giant claw.

My claw was hungry. I could feel it. The blood on my arm pulsed and started to drink him.

I fell to the floor. I felt a hunger I'd never felt in my life before.

I could smell something not so far from where I was. Something sweet. Something delicious.

Without thinking, I rushed to the location, running on all fours like some savage beast.

Upon reaching it, I was met with something that immediately brought me back to my senses.

Doctor Yelena and a group of humans were seeking shelter and hiding from the sanguis. That's what I smelled. I was developing a yearning for human blood.

I could see the fear in Doctor Yelena's eyes as she saw me: half-monster, with bared fangs, claws, and wounds that should have killed me.

The people were trembling with fear.

I asked myself:

"How did things go so wrong? This isn't how things were supposed to turn out."

Chapter 10We formed parties of two and departed for New Sunset City. The coverage for the mission included the outer parts of the city—from the water and sewage pipelines, stretching all the way to Manstand Bridge.New Sunset City was an island, with only four bridges leading out of it. The colony shelters were located just west of the city, still inside the island but away from the buildings.Old warehouses, factories, and schools that were meant to be demolished for the extension of the city outwards ended up being our shelters. The same places we deemed abandoned and useless were now a safe haven.Margery and I were assigned to search through Bedrock Street. It was a scarcely populated neighborhood back then, hence it had very little sanguis activity. We started off around seven in the morning. At first, the walk there was awkward. Neither of us spoke to the other. Whenever we talked, it was always the three of us—and now, it kind of felt weird just walking the two of us.I wanted

  • chapter 9 : The mission.

Chapter 9I found myself standing at the top of the factory building, staring at the city. My home—the place I grew up in.All my life, that's all I knew. I was born and worked there. Now all of it was in chaos. Death lingered in every corner, and in some way, it was partially my fault.I thought to myself: if I told Benson and the others what caused the apocalypse—that I was one of the scientists who started it all—how would they react? If I told them I was a monster myself, barely managing to keep myself restrained, to keep this thing inside me restrained—how would they react? It was all the more reason why I couldn't tell them anything.I know it's wrong, but I'll have to keep lying to them. The base Doctor Elana said she was at was west of Sunset City, deep inside a rainforest. It was dangerous, but I had to go.The journey would take me days at most, on foot. I wondered when it was best to leave."Wilton!"The sudden shout of my name startled me. It was Isaac."Yo! What's up!?" I

  • Chapter 8 : A decisive Battle! Wilton vs the sanguis!

The sanguis talked. It was not fluent speech, but it talked still.I didn't know they could do that. On further inspection, I noticed this one was far different from the others.I realized why there weren't any sanguis in the building. It was because of the monster in front of me. I had just stepped into its lair. The very sight of it brought fear unto me. Its upper body was still human-like, though its skin peeled off and its ribs ripped from its body. It bared fangs, and its arms ended in claws. Its lower body was like that of a spider, with many claw-shaped legs that pierced through the very ground as it walked."You... Come... Me..."It spoke again.I immediately turned back. I wasn't foolish enough to fight it, but upon trying to run, it lunged forward, blocking the door."You... come... meeee!!"It lunged at me again. I was quick to jump away. Its claws pierced through the concrete ground like it was wet paper where it landed.I pulled out the UMP and started shooting at its fac

Hours passed. I could feel this thing stirring inside of me. The hunger pains worsened with every second that passed.Down on the floor were dozens of snacks and paper wraps. I tried eating. But it was no use.I could feel my lips getting drier. My stomach felt like it was caving in inside of me.My vision blurred and I lost all strength. I couldn't muster myself to get up.I felt like I was slowly going to sleep, and with every second that I felt that way, it felt like the monster inside of me got more and more desperate to come out.It was clear to me at that moment. If I starve, I risk letting this thing out of me.I tried getting up with all my strength, holding on to the freezer next to me for balance.Dung. Dung. Dung.My heart wouldn't stop pounding. The freezer I was holding onto collapsed, and I ended up falling to the ground again. The freezer burst open from the impact, and a bunch of raw fish and meat that had been refrigerated in there fell out.At that moment, the raw fi

  • Chapter 6 : An Escape Plan

Hours passed. The sanguis didn't give any signs of slowing down. They tore through building after building in search of us."If we sit idle, they will find us eventually. We have to do something," Marshal spoke. He was right. It was only a matter of time before they found us.Benson seemed lost in thought."We could use the same diversion plan as before," Marshal said."It won't work. There are too many of them, and they're scattered in all directions. You'd get killed before you could even create enough distance to throw the grenade," Benson replied."Well, do you have any better ideas?"I was also thinking of a way to escape.I stared out the window. The building where we conducted the experiment was just up ahead—not more than a kilometer away. If I wanted to find Doctor Elana, the lab was the best place to start.I could feel my arm getting worse. Maybe it was the excitement. Maybe it was reacting to the other sanguis. But I knew if nothing was done, things would get really bad—no

  • Chapter 5 : The Monsters Den

"The tunnels are just a few meters away."Isaac said, leading us to their location. We were four in total. We entered the tunnels and began following Isaac into the city. The tunnels were dark, and the water in there reached almost to our knees. We had to use torchlights to see where we were going. The smell in there was bad, but it never bothered me much. Maybe it was the sanguis inside me?"Argh. It fucking smells in here!"The voice belonged to Marshal. A former policeman. He was the biggest among us, with a red bandana on his head and a weird mustache."Quiet down. The sanguis may not be able to see us under here, but that doesn't mean they won't hear us," Benson said."We're here." Isaac said, staring above at a manhole sealed with a heavy metal lid."You sure?" Benson asked Isaac, strapping his torch back into his belt."Yes. Once we go up, the gun shop is just about 50 meters away."Benson turned around to face us. "Okay, listen up. We climb up into the city, and without making
