Eric got the address for the meet up, Nora sent him the text, given an instruction, that says COME ALONE.

Eric felt it strange , he sighed and continued his work, gathering the weeds, as he concluded for the day.

Eric closed from work, heading back to Lisa’s place, that is where he actually lives, because he had issues with his rent, of his former apartment.

Eric got home late, he worked back home. He met Lisa already asleep, he refreshed up and he couldn’t wake her up, because he still felt hurt.

Eric thought about what Nora said, that what is it was true?

Or is Nora trying to scatter their relationship, because they are friends, considering her action in the cafe.

Those questions roam around his head, he decided not to see Nora too night anymore, he went to bed.

Eric woke up the next morning with a feeling of heaviness in his chest. Those thoughts came back instantly, he resumed from where he stop, Nora words and Lisa actions.

“Not now,” Eric said within himself, he held his head, as he tries distract himself from his thoughts.

He looked over to find Lisa still asleep, her hand resting on his arm. Her face looked peaceful, a picture of innocence that felt so at odds with everything he was feeling.

Eric used his fingers to trace her soft cheek, without no words.

Eric slipped out from under her touch as gently as he could, but his mind was anything but calm, a bit of anger still simmered beneath the surface, fueled by everything he had discovered, every doubt that had crept into his heart.

Eric took a long shower, hoping it would wash away the tension, but even the hot water couldn’t clear his head. When he finished getting dressed and was about to head out, he heard movement behind him.

Lisa had woken up, her eyes blinking away sleep as she stretched and gave him a sleepy smile.

She yarns, in her night gown.

“Good morning, love,” she murmured, slipping out of bed and moving towards him.

“Morning,” he replied.

Eric forced a small smile, but his stiff posture betrayed his emotions. Lisa tilted her head, noticing the strain in his face.

“Are you alright?” she asked softly, wrapping her arms around his neck, rubbing his head gently.

Eric avoided eye contact.

She looked up at him with wide, concerned eyes, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

“Just…tired,” he replied, his voice low and flat.

“Long night, I …. I…had a lot of work to do .. at the garden, that is all,” Eric added.

Lisa leaned in closer, pressing a kiss to his cheek and resting her head on his shoulder.

“Look at me, please…?” Lisa requested politely, as she rubs his head gently.

Eric turned his gaze to her partially, he was still feeling hurt.

“I’m sorry, Eric,” she whispered, her tone gentle and sweet, almost as if she could sense the tension in him.

It struck Eric, the submission in her tone, Eric looked at her.

“Are you?” He asked.

Lisa exhaled. “Yes, I am…. From my heart to my love,” she replied.

“After all you did at your exclusive birthday party right?” Eric asked.

“About that, I can explain, I…. I.. it was birthday, right?” She started.

She continued “and I know that you can’t throw me a party, like an actual party, so my friend Oliver, we are just friends, he decided to assist me, that is all. Look, I don’t mean to hurt you, I would never do that intentionally, and sorry for keeping it a secret, I swear, that there will be no more secrets, it is promise,”

Eric sighed. “But you were on Oliver lap, why?” He asked.

“I was drunk, a couple shots, come on…. I am just a girl, do you forgive me?” Lisa asked, she rub his gently even more, playing with his hair.

Eric smiled, and then the tension disappeared.

“I forgive you,” he muttered, Eric bought the apology without pricing.

Lisa was happy.

Eric pulled her closer and he asked “what about Oliver?”

She took a deep breath, looking down as though choosing her words carefully. “I want you to know I’m going to end things with Oliver. I know it hasn’t been easy for you, and you mean so much to me. I don’t want anything to come between us.”

Her words, combined with her touch, stirred something inside him. Despite his lingering doubts, he found himself softening. The anger and suspicion ebbed away, replaced by a fragile hope that maybe, just maybe, things could be different. He took her hand, looking into her eyes, and for a moment, he felt a glimmer of trust.

“Thank you, Lisa,” he said quietly, his voice almost breaking. “It means a lot to hear that.”

Lisa’s phone beep with text message on the screen. “You got a text,” Eric pointed out.

“Just ignore it, it will ruin the moment,” she replied.

She smiled, leaning in to kiss him again, and he felt himself forgiving her in his heart, allowing the hope to take root.

Eric felt relieved.

“So… what about the necklace? I mean my gift, found it?” Lisa asked.

“No, but I promise you another one, I have picture of it on my phone,” Eric said, he brought his phone and showed her the picture he took with the necklace in his hand.

“That is cute, but don’t bother getting another one,” Lisa said, patting him gently.

Eric smiled.

Maybe Nora had been wrong. Maybe Lisa truly did love him.

As he left for work, Eric was the happiest man, in the world, he felt lively. his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen to see Nora’s name.

He picked.

“Eric, why didn’t you show up last night?” Nora’s voice was a mix of worry and irritation.

“I was waiting for you, and I thought you’d want to hear what I had to say.” She added.

Eric sighed, glancing out the window as he spoke. “I changed my mind, Nora. Lisa apologized this morning, and she promised to cut off ties with Oliver. I think… I think she means it.”

There was silence on the other end of the line before Nora responded, her voice incredulous.

“Eric, you’re making a mistake. I don’t think you understand the kind of person she is. I saw things…” Nora mutttered, she was disappointed.

“Nora, stop it! Stop all of these! You just ruin my morning,” he interrupted, feeling a surge of defensiveness.

“I’m giving her a second chance. She’s apologized, and I think she deserves that.” Eric added.

Nora tried once more, her tone turning desperate. “Eric, please, you need to listen. There’s so much you don’t know. Just meet me once, and I can explain everything.”

“No,” Eric replied firmly, his voice cold.

“I’ve made my decision. Goodbye, Nora.” He hung up, not wanting to hear more, refusing to let her words taint the fragile peace he had found with Lisa.

The workday went by in a blur, but Eric felt lighter. He’d chosen to believe Lisa, to trust her. By the time evening rolled around, he was feeling hopeful for the first time in days.

Meanwhile, Nora was leaving work, her mind troubled by the call with Eric. She couldn’t shake the feeling that he was heading for heartbreak. As she walked down the street, something caught her eye. Across the road, just stepping out of a car, she spotted Lisa and Oliver. They were laughing together, arm in arm, as they walked into a fancy restaurant.

“Isn’t that Lisa? And…? My gosh! Oliver? I need to record this, pure evidence,” Nora muttered

Nora’s heart raced. This was exactly what she’d feared. She quickly ducked behind a nearby pillar, pulling out her phone to record the scene. She followed them at a safe distance, her pulse quickening as she captured a video of them heading into the restaurant.

Inside, Lisa and Oliver settled into a table near the window.

“Thanks for bringing me here, if it was my boyfriend, I can’t cross that door, let alone afford the bill, I think the bill here is his annual income,” Lisa said.

“Poor, low life….,” Oliver added.

Nora stayed close, lingering just outside and peering through the glass. She saw Lisa pull out her phone, scrolling through her social media feed, while Oliver ordered food for them.

Lisa’s face shifted as she scrolled, and her eyes widened in surprise. On her screen was a recent photo of Nora wearing the very same necklace that Eric had once shown her, the one he had bought as a gift.

“What?!” Lisa spat.

  • Chais of Silence.

The night air was charged with an unnormal stillness, one felt only after there had been too much laughter to bounce off a room. Inside the Rodriguez mansion, the walls pulsed with golden light, the scents of champagne and foreign candles hanging in the air late into the night after the guests had left.
