The white light of the completed trade faded, and two boxes of Beef Stew MRE vanished from Nathan's inventory. In their place: Iron Scrap x4 and a tube of Industrial Sealant.
After looking things over, Nathan decided to follow up with NightWanderer for the remaining scrap he needed. The guy was only willing to part with two pieces, though.
"NightWanderer: Kind of need the rest myself, honestly. What if I throw in two cuts of meat instead?"
The meat out here was actually decent, even with zero seasoning to work with.
Still, with most of the materials already secured, Nathan didn't feel like haggling over the last stretch. He agreed and handed over his final box of MRE.
Yeah, losing that last good meal stung a little. But the thought of finally having running hot water? Worth every bite he was giving up.
"Alright. Time to work."
Nathan grabbed the materials and headed back to the small outhouse.
Following the system prompts, he placed the scrap and sealant into the construction hologram.
A series of mechanical clicks and whirs echoed through the air.
Then a flash of white light. A black, tank-like unit materialized on the outer wall, its base connected to a wide funnel meant for scooping loose sand and dust, a thin vent pipe jutting out from the top.
"New Construction Unlocked. Exp +50 Level 2 Camp Water Storage and Heating System (Operational) Status: Online Water Source: Reclaimed Ground Moisture (Adequate) Water Temperature: Maintained at 104°F (Warm) Fuel Consumption: Wood x1 per 24 hours Description: Not for drinking, but for washing off the dirt and exhaustion. This is what keeps a person civilized when the world outside isn't."
"It's done."
Nathan couldn't wait. He pulled a piece of wood from his inventory and fed it into the burner hatch.
Flames flickered to life inside the unit. A faint rush of water started moving through the pipes.
He pushed the door open, walked in, and twisted the showerhead.
Splash.
Warm water streamed down, sending up thin curls of steam. A hundred and four degrees wasn't exactly scalding, but after two days of dust, sweat, and heat that never let up, it might as well have been.
For the next twenty minutes, Nathan barely thought about anything at all.
He peeled off his stiff, grimy clothes and stood under the steady stream, letting the water run over him, washing away layers of grit and exhaustion. His shoulders finally unclenched for the first time since arriving in this place.
And then there was the actual toilet, working, private, indoors. Only someone who'd spent two days ducking behind rocks in the open air could really appreciate that particular luxury.
"Unreal," he muttered, letting out a long breath. He felt human again.
Just as he twisted the faucet off, standing there savoring that long-lost sense of normal, gold text blazed across his vision.
"Server Announcement: Congratulations to survivor STILLUNEMPLOYED for unlocking a hidden achievement, First Civilized Man! Achievement Description: In this shattered wasteland, he was the first to establish working sanitation and wash off the grime. The world may have ended, but dignity endures. A unique reward has been granted."
Nathan stared at the gold text hovering in front of him. His mouth twitched.
What kind of achievement was this?
First person on the whole server to take a shower and use a toilet? And they had to broadcast it? With a line about dignity enduring, no less?
Sure enough, the channel had already gone completely sideways.
"Wait what. First Civilized Man? For showering?"
"Bro I'm literally out here shivering and he's building bathrooms."
"Why does some people get all the luck. I want a shower too, I haven't washed my face in three days."
"MARCUSV: Attention seeker. Building useless luxuries while people are out here struggling. Guys who only care about themselves eventually.."
Nathan tuned that last one out immediately.
He wrapped a towel around himself, one that had conveniently appeared on the rack the moment construction finished. Plain white, but dry and soft.
"Let's see the reward."
He opened his inventory. The box this time was pale gray with a faint shine, nothing flashy.
"Opening Achievement Package... Obtained: Small Oil Lamp x2 (Provides soft light and a bit of warmth. Slightly improves mood.) Obtained: Soft Cotton Robe x1 (Life's greatest indulgence? Wrapping yourself in this after a hot shower.) Obtained: Basic Building Materials Pack (Small) x1 (Contains: Wood x10, Stone x10, Nails x20) Obtained: Fracture Token x50 Obtained: High-Performance Thermal Base Layer (Uncommon) Slot: Torso/Underlayer Attribute: Heat Resistance +5 Special Effect: Self-Cleaning (Special coating repels dirt. Clothing stays clean 30% longer.)"
"Now we're talking."
Nathan picked up the fitted white undershirt. The fabric felt smooth as silk but sturdy, like some kind of high-end outdoor gear.
Heat Resistance +5 meant his body would hold up longer on future trips outside the Core's radius. And the self-cleaning effect, in a world where doing laundry was practically impossible, that was a real game changer.
"Yeah. Worth it. Completely worth it."
He pulled the thermal layer on immediately, then wrapped himself in the robe the system had handed him. Warm and, for once, comfortable.
Still drying his hair, he pushed the door open and jogged back to the main cabin.
Outside, the dry wind still howled just as hard as before. But his mood had shifted entirely.
Back inside, Nathan settled onto the stiff wooden stool and let his eyes drift toward the small workbench in the corner.
It had come with the Level 2 upgrade. He'd barely glanced at it before, it could only craft the most basic essentials. Wooden bowls, spoons, simple torches. Nothing worth his attention.
Now, the interface lit up.
"Currently Bound Tool: Rusty Carving Knife (Starter Kit) Craftable Items: Wooden Bowl, Wooden Spoon, Crude Spear, Wooden Torch..."
"So it's all junk because the tool's junk."
Nathan rubbed his chin.
The system had been very specific about one phrase. Bound Tool.
Those two words cracked open a whole set of possibilities.
"What if I bound something real to it?"
His pulse ticked up.
He pulled the heavy toolbox from his inventory and popped the lid.
Inside: the dead chainsaw, the expensive drill, the precision level, the reciprocating saw still sharp even without power.
He grabbed the cordless circular saw and set it on the workbench.
"High-Precision Cutting Tool Detected. (No Power) Bind to Basic Workbench?"
"No way. It actually works."
Nathan's eyes lit up. He hit yes without hesitation.
"Binding Successful. Due to lack of power, this tool currently functions only as a Precision Fixed Cutting Module. Workbench Upgrading..."
A series of mechanical sounds filled the cabin. The circular saw sank into the workbench surface, leaving only the exposed blade visible, now working as a manual table saw.
Sure, it needed hand-cranking or foot-pedaling to run, the system had rigged up a crude drive mechanism automatically, but the precision compared to that rusty carving knife wasn't even close.
Then the interface exploded with new options.
"Basic Workbench (Modified) Currently Bound Tool: Cordless Circular Saw (Converted to Manual Drive) New Craftable Items: Refined Planks (Smooth, uniform boards, actual lumber instead of rough logs) Storage Crate Reinforced Wooden Door (+50% Defense) Composite Wooden Bow (Requires bowstring. Precision carving now possible for proper limb curvature.)"
Nathan stared at the newly unlocked list. His breathing picked up a little.
"What if I bind the drill too? Could that become a press? What about the nail gun, could that build a trap line?"
He felt like he'd just stumbled onto something massive. Something that might not have been meant for him to find this early.
He looked down at the toolbox full of gear still waiting inside, and his eyes burned with anticipation.
To be continued.

Chapter 15 - Flagged for Review
The attack came three nights later, and it didn't announce itself the way the last one had.No distant howling building slowly to a crescendo. No warning chime from the system giving him time to prepare. Nathan only noticed because the winch he'd left propped against the outer wall of the workshop scraped against stone, a small, wrong sound that shouldn't have happened entirely on its own in the still night air.He was up and moving before he'd fully processed why his body had already decided to react.Outside, in the thin margin between the Core's glow and the workshop's cold steel shadow, three shapes moved low and fast, closer to the ground than the creatures from his first night here. Not the same species at all. Longer limbs, patchy hide the color of the cracked earth around them, moving in a coordinated pattern that felt less like blind animal instinct and more like something closer to tactics."Warning: hostile group detected within camp perimeter."The alert came a full two se
Chapter 14 - Static on the Line
Back at camp, Nathan did something he hadn't done since setting his handle nearly two weeks ago: he actually tried to talk to someone, honestly, instead of just trading. He scrolled through his trade history until he found RUSTLINE, a survivor he'd dealt with twice now, always straightforward, no games, no spam messages disguised as trade notes. If anyone in this world might have noticed something as strange as what he'd found today, it would be someone paying close attention rather than someone just trying to survive the next hour at a time."STILLUNEMPLOYED: Random question. You ever notice your gear doing something it shouldn't? Like knowing things it has no way of knowing?"The reply took longer than usual to arrive, long enough that Nathan found himself watching the little indicator that showed a message was being typed, then not typed, then typed again."RUSTLINE: Why are you asking that."Not really a question. A statement dressed up as one, careful in a way that made Nathan's
Chapter 13 - Handwriting That Isn't Mine
The symbol nagged at him for two full days before Nathan finally admitted he needed to see it again in person, not just from memory replaying on a loop every time he closed his eyes.He geared up properly this time. Boots, jacket, the hatchet on his belt, and the folded map tucked into an outer pocket where he could reach it fast without fumbling through his inventory under pressure. The winch stayed behind at camp, too heavy to be worth hauling on foot for a scouting trip this far.He picked a direction from the map, a mark a little further out than he'd ever gone before, close to what looked like a cluster of low structures sketched into the paper's rough grid. The walk took most of the morning, longer than he'd planned for. The terrain shifted the farther he went, cracked flatland slowly giving way to broken slabs of stone jutting up at odd, unnatural angles, like the ground itself had buckled violently under something enormous a very long time ago, long before the countdown had ev
Chapter 12 - Six Thousand and Falling
Morning came the way it always did out here, gray light bleeding slowly into a sky that never quite committed to blue, the heat already pressing in before the horizon had finished lightening.Nathan checked the Server Channel before he'd even fully sat up, the habit worn into him by now like brushing his teeth used to be."Current Online Survivors: 4,401 / 10,000"The decline had slowed since the first brutal culling on day one, but it hadn't stopped, and something about the steadiness of that decline felt worse than a single dramatic spike would have. Five hundred more gone in the last two days alone, picked off one or two at a time by heat, by wildlife, by disputes between survivors that the channel only ever hinted at in vague, uneasy fragments. He scrolled through the chatter while he ate a piece of the pale bread from his supply crate, the taste still bland but at least familiar now."Anyone else's Core acting weird at night? Mine dims for like a second around the same time every
Chapter 11 - What the Journal Already Knew
Three days into the workshop's existence, Nathan finally had a night with nothing urgent left to do.The Core sat steady at Level 2, humming its low blue pulse. The water system ran clean. The outhouse no longer felt like a punchline. Even the workbench, still bristling with bolted-on power tools, had settled into something like routine. For the first time since arriving in the Shattered Flats, Nathan had a quiet evening with no fire to feed and no trade to close. He sat on the stool near the Core, pulled his jacket open, and finally took the journal out of his chest pocket. He hadn't opened it since the day he arrived. Not really. He'd flipped past the cover once, seen the blueprint for the Core, and gone straight into survival mode. There'd never been time to actually sit with it.Now there was.He turned past the first few pages, the ones he remembered from his old life, half-finished sketches of buildings he'd designed for IRONVEIL before the project died. A watchtower with a spir
Chapter 10 - Ahead of Schedule
The night stretched on. Wind rattled softly against the cabin's shutters, a steady, almost rhythmic sound.Wrapped in his robe, Nathan was like a kid in a hardware store on Christmas morning. He kept hauling tools over to the workbench, one after another, seemingly without a trace of fatigue."Drill. Bind."Angle grinder. Bind."Nail gun. Bind."Level... okay, can't bind that one. Fine. Set it aside."Reciprocating saw. Bind. Bind. Bind."Every time another piece of gear touched the workbench, the system chimed like it was having a small seizure."High-precision drilling equipment detected. Binding successful. Unlocked: Precision Drill Press Module.""High-impact fastening equipment detected. Binding successful. Unlocked: Pneumatic Nailer Integration Module.""High-speed grinding equipment detected. Binding successful. Unlocked: Multi-Purpose Grinder Module."The once-simple workbench had transformed completely. Its smooth timber surface was now buried under steel gears, linkage rods,
