Claire heard it from the people standing near the door. Two women whispered it behind their glasses, and then a man said it out loud to his friend, as if he couldn't believe it either. That was Olivia Grant, the senior director of Sterling Crown Bank.
Claire felt something heavy settle in her chest. She had asked for the divorce only a few hours ago, and already Ethan was walking in with a woman everyone in the room knew by name. She told herself it didn't matter, but she couldn't shake the feeling.
She looked at Olivia's back, then at the way Ethan walked beside her, calm and easy, like he'd been going to dinners like this his whole life. That wasn't how she remembered him at all.
The ballroom was huge. Crystal lights hung from the ceiling, round tables were set with white cloths and gold plates, and a small band was playing near the stage. At the far end stood a long table with a velvet cloth over it, where the auction items would be shown later.
The moment Preston stepped inside, people started drifting toward him. A heavy man in a gray suit got to him first, shaking his hand with both of his. Two more followed behind him, then a woman in a green dress, then a few others who had been waiting for a chance.
"Mr. Whitaker, so good to see you," the heavy man said. "I was telling my wife just yesterday that your family has been doing wonders for this city."
"You flatter me," Preston said, although he didn't look like he minded.
"And Miss Bennett, you look wonderful tonight." The woman in the green dress smiled at Claire. "The two of you make such a lovely pair. Everyone says so, a better match couldn't be found."
"Oh, we're not..." Claire started.
"They really are," the heavy man cut in, laughing. "Young, smart, both going places. My daughter says your clothing line is all she wears."
Claire gave a polite smile and let it go. It wasn't worth arguing with a crowd. But Preston put a hand lightly on her back again, and he sat a little taller, and a proud look came over his face.
"We try our best," he said.
Ethan and Olivia stood off to one side. Nobody came over to talk to them. A few guests looked at Ethan in his plain black suit, then looked away, like he wasn't worth the effort.
Then the heavy man leaned in toward Preston and lowered his voice, though not by much.
"Mr. Whitaker, have you heard about tonight's auction? They say Mr. Mercer is putting up something special this year."
"Harold Mercer?" Preston said. "The host?"
Harold Mercer was the head of the biggest business association in the city, and this dinner was his event every year. Every deal in town seemed to pass through his hands at some point.
"The very same. It's an old ring from his private collection." The man made it sound like a secret. "Very rare, I'm told. Some kind of antique nobody has seen in years. The starting price is already out of this world, and it'll go higher. Honestly, I don't think anyone here but you could afford it."
Murmurs went around the little crowd. A few people nodded, and the woman in green said she'd heard the same thing.
Preston's smile widened. He turned and looked across the room as if he were already measuring it.
"Then I suppose I'll have to bid," he said. "Let's say that ring is as good as mine."
There was polite laughter and a few claps. Someone said, "Of course, of course," and somebody else raised a glass.
On the other side of the room, Olivia let out a short laugh through her nose.
It was soft, but it carried. Preston's head turned.
"Something funny, Ms. Grant?"
"Nothing," Olivia said. She tilted her head and gave him a thin smile. "I was only thinking that you sound very sure of yourself, Mr. Whitaker. For a man who thinks he's the biggest buyer in the room."
"I don't think so, it's true." Preston's smile got tighter.
"Is that so?" Olivia glanced up at Ethan beside her and tightened her hold on his arm. "If this gentleman wanted to, he could buy the whole auction house. And the building it sits in."
The room went still for one second.
Then people started laughing. It began with the woman in green and spread outward until half the nearby tables were looking over. A man at the next table slapped his knee.
"The whole auction house," someone repeated. "Did you hear that?"
"Who is this guy?"
"That's the ex-husband," the heavy man said, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Miss Bennett's husband, or he was. She dumped him this afternoon, he worked at a car wash."
More laughter. Claire's face went hot, and she looked at the floor.
"A car wash?" the woman in green said. "And Ms. Grant is on his arm? What kind of tricks did he use to get a woman like that to stand up for him?"
"Maybe he's good at something, he probably has something big down there.” A man said, and a few people snickered.
Olivia's eyes went cold. She opened her mouth, but Ethan touched her hand lightly and she stopped.
He didn't look at the crowd. He didn't look angry or embarrassed either. He was looking at the long table at the end of the hall, with the velvet cloth over it, as if nothing else in the room mattered.
All the flattery and fake smiles around him were noise. He'd stood in the middle of it for five minutes, and none of it had touched him. There was only one thing in this ballroom he had come for.
"Don't worry about it," he told Olivia quietly. Then he raised his voice just enough to be heard. "I'm not interested in buying the whole auction."
The laughter dipped as people turned to hear him.
"But that ring," Ethan said. "That one is mine."

Chapter 8
Preston stared at Ethan for a long moment. Then a slow smile spread over his face, and he leaned back in his chair.Fifteen million. It was a big number, and a man like Ethan could never say it with his own money. Somebody was backing him, and Preston didn't need to guess who. Olivia was sitting right next to him, sipping her wine like she had nothing to do with it.But Preston knew something that Ethan didn't. Harold Mercer ran his auctions by a strict rule, and everyone in the upper circle of the city knew it. The person who bid and the person who paid had to be the same. Nobody could pay for someone else, and no one could send a friend or a bank to cover the bill.Ethan couldn't know that. If he did, he wouldn't be sitting there so calm. He thought Olivia would simply write a check for him, and he was about to find out that she couldn't.Preston picked up his paddle. He wanted to teach this man a lesson he would never forget."Fifteen million and five hundred thousand," he called o

Preston's face turned dark. He had been pleased with himself a minute ago, and now his jaw was so tight that a muscle jumped in his cheek. He was sure Ethan was doing it on purpose. A car wash worker walks into a room like this, and he has the nerve to say that ring is his, right in front of everyone. Preston's hand curled around his glass until his knuckles went pale."Fine," he said, and forced a laugh. "Let's see how he plans to get it. I'd love to watch."Around them, the guests were already whispering and grinning. Nobody in the room believed Ethan for a second. They figured he was a poor man trying to look big in front of a famous woman, and they were ready to enjoy the show when he fell on his face.Harold Mercer walked up to the stage, tapped the microphone, and welcomed everyone. People took their seats. Waiters moved between the tables, and the auction began. The first item was an oil painting of a harbor. It sold for two hundred thousand dollars. The second was a gold pocke

Chapter 5
The Harbor Palace Hotel had a red carpet rolled out across the front steps. Cars were lined up along the curb, and men in tuxedos and women in long dresses were walking in two and three at a time.Ethan's car stopped at the end of the line. Olivia was on the phone in the back seat, talking low and fast with one finger raised to tell him she'd be a minute. He nodded and got out first. The suit she had found for him fit well. It was black, simple, and cut like it was made for him, and for the first time in three years he didn't smell like soap and car wax. He tugged at the sleeve and started up the carpet."Ethan?"He knew the voice before he turned. Claire was standing near the door in a dark blue evening dress, with her hair pinned up and a small silver bag in her hand. Preston was next to her in a tuxedo, one hand resting at her back. Her eyes went wide. "What are you doing here?""I came for the dinner," Ethan said."You came for the dinner?" She looked him up and down, from the sui
Chapter 4
Diane and Jessica stood frozen on the steps. They knew who Olivia Grant was, and they knew she meant every word.Diane opened her mouth to argue, then shut it again. Jessica tugged at her sleeve, and the two of them walked off down the sidewalk without looking back. People were still filming, and Jessica kept her face turned away."Mom, that's it for us at this bank," Jessica said once they were far enough. "All because of him.""Don't worry," Diane said through her teeth. "That card is fake, I'd bet my life on it. Once the staff checks it, they'll find out and the police will come. He'll get a lot worse than we did."She took out her phone and called Claire. She didn't wait for a hello."Claire, your husband just hit me. I'm at the bank, I fell down the steps, and my hip is killing me." Her voice was shaking, and it sounded real. "And that's not even the worst of it. He's mixed up with some gang of thieves. He showed up here with a fake black card trying to cheat the bank out of mone

For a second nobody moved. Then Jessica started laughing, and Diane joined in."Where did you pick that up, the trash?" Diane said, wiping her eyes. "Or did you steal it from somebody?""That's the supreme black card," Jessica said. "It's the highest card this bank has. The people who own those are some of the most powerful people in the world.""If the real owner finds out you're walking around with it, they'll have you killed," Diane said. "And you're standing here waving it like a toy."Ethan kept his voice flat. "I didn't steal it. It was given to me.""Given to you." Diane shook her head. "By whom? Nobody gives away a card like that. You must have done something shady. A scam, a robbery, I don't know."Jessica took a step back from him and looked at the people around them. "Mom, what if he drags us into it? We were just talking to him. Somebody could say we knew.""That's right." Diane's face went tight. She pointed at Ethan like he had a disease. "Thank God Claire is done with y
