The sky above Meridian City burned before the battle even began.

Oliver stood at the bow of the Traveler airship, feeling the cold wind rush across his face as he stared down at the coastal megapolis.

Meridian was a jewel of the eastern shore, famous for its gleaming white towers and the three shimmering barrier rings that protected it. Tonight, all three rings trembled like thin sheets of glass.

The sea below looked wrong. Dark waves churned as if something monstrous stirred beneath them.

The tunnel was completely pitch-black.Commander Oliver walked alone into the deep earth. The silence was heavy. It pressed against his ears like thick water. His heavy combat boots made no sound on the smooth stone floor. He moved like a ghost.Half of his face was covered in smooth, black Wraithborn metal. His right arm was completely alien. The dark magic from the black coin had eaten his human flesh. Glowing purple veins pulsed inside his dark, metallic skin.He was walking toward the Overlord. He was walking toward the end of the world.Suddenly, Oliver stopped. His cold, gray human ear heard a sound. It was very faint. It was far behind him.Crunch. Scrape. Crunch. It was the sound of heavy boots stepping on loose rocks.Oliver did not turn around. He did not ask who was there. He instantly raised his silent sniper rifle with his left hand. He aimed it backward over his shoulder, perfectly tracking the sound in the dark."Halt," Oliver commanded. His voice was flat, cold, and m

The giant spiders stopped climbing. They clung to the walls far below the blue bridge, out of range of the plasma rifles. They turned their ugly heads downward. They aimed at the cracked rock shelf where the remaining ninety civilians were still waiting to climb."Commander!" Vega shouted. "They are aiming at the bottom shelf! They are going to spit acid on the people waiting in line!"Oliver processed the new variables in one millisecond.Variable A: The spiders are out of optimal firing range.Variable B: If they spit acid webs on the shelf, ninety civilians will die instantly.Variable C: I must neutralize the spiders without destroying the rock shelf."Cease fire," Oliver commanded the soldiers."Cease fire?!" Davis yelled in panic. "Sir, they are going to kill them!""They will not kill them," Oliver said flatly.Oliver stepped onto the glowing blue hard-light bridge. He walked out over the massive, empty drop. He stood directly above the trapped civilians. He looked down at the

Vega raised her gun. She aimed across the dark abyss. "Aiming.""Fire a piton bullet," Oliver commanded. "A heavy spike."BANG! Vega fired. A thick steel spike shot out of her gun and slammed deep into the solid rock wall across the canyon."Perfect," Oliver said.Oliver reached into his belt. He pulled out one of his last silver Anchor-stabilizer discs. He tied the thick copper cable securely around the silver disc.Oliver then did something impossible. He threw the silver disc across the massive, two-hundred-foot canyon. His black metal right arm was not human. It had the strength of a Wraithborn Goliath. He threw the heavy disc with the power of a cannon. The disc flew in a perfect, straight line. It hit the steel spike that Vega had shot into the far wall. The magnetic lock on the disc clicked. It stuck to the spike. Now, a thick copper cable hung directly across the canyon, forming a tightrope high above the trapped civilians."The line is set," Oliver said smoothly. "Billy. Turn

The bullet flew through the bright blue light of the reactor room. It was a simple piece of heavy metal. But Commander Oliver had calculated its path perfectly. He calculated the speed of the bullet. He calculated the wind from the cooling fans. He calculated the exact microsecond Captain Iris would press her thumb down. The bullet did not hit Iris in the chest. It did not hit her beautiful face.CRACK! The heavy bullet hit the small red detonator perfectly in the center. The red plastic shattered into a hundred pieces. The wires broke. The detonator was completely destroyed before Iris could push the button.Iris let out a terrible, unnatural scream. It was not her voice. It was the ancient, booming voice of the Overlord. The dark god realized his bomb was broken. He could not blow up the planet. The trap had failed. The sick, dark purple veins on Iris’s neck suddenly vanished. The glowing red fire in her eyes went out. The Overlord dropped her mind, retreating back into the dark e

Oliver stepped forward in the pitch-black tunnel. He moved straight toward the charging giants. He held the silver Anchor disc in his left hand. The disc was connected by copper wires to the glowing blue Volt-Hound spine that Rax was carrying behind him.Oliver did not use a gun. He did not use his knife. He ran the math of kinetic energy. “Force equals mass times acceleration.”The center Goliath swung its massive bone sword blindly in the dark.Oliver slid perfectly under the swinging sword. He moved with robotic grace. He stepped directly in front of the center Goliath."General Vega," Oliver whispered into the radio. "When the light flashes, shoot the copper wire in my left hand.""Shoot the wire?!" Vega gasped in the dark. "Commander, you are holding it! The explosion will kill you!""Shoot the wire," Oliver repeated flatly. He slammed his black metal right fist directly into the Goliath's thick steel chest armor. He didn't punch to hurt it. He punched to grab it. His strong met

"We can't fight like that!" Sergeant Miller argued. "It's like fighting in a strobe light! We won't be able to see the enemy!""You will not need to see them if you follow my rhythm," Oliver said coldly. He turned to the squad."Listen to my exact orders," Oliver commanded. "When the lights are on, you may move. You may aim. You may shoot. But the exact microsecond the lights go out, you must freeze. You must not take a single step. You must not pull the trigger. If you shoot in the dark, you will hit your friends.""Freeze in the dark?" Davis asked, trembling. "But what if a monster is right in front of me?!""If you move in the dark, the monster will hear you," Oliver said flatly. "If you stay perfectly still, the monster will have to guess where you are. We are going to synchronize our squad responses to the pulse. We will become ghosts in the dark, and killers in the light."Oliver looked at the glowing blue spine of the dead Volt-Hound resting on the floor."Rax. Pick up the ener
