Everything hurt for Oliver. It felt as if his muscles were tearing themselves apart. Quick, shaky breaths filled with stale, cold air seared his burning lungs. His feet were leaden, yet he forced every step to stay upright and backward over the glimmering shards of glass and the shattered crates.

Tiny stars of dust floated in the air. The rhythmic pounding of his heart almost made him lose touch with the dying echo of the chime ringing in his mind.

Ping!

The giant, rusted heart beat slowly in the dark void. Black blood dripped from its massive veins. Standing on top of the awful thing was the corrupted ghost of Lira. She looked at Commander Oliver with eyes full of weeping black ink. "You left me in the dark," the broken ghost whispered. Her voice carried the sound of crying children and grinding stones. "Now you will drown in it."Oliver stood on the bridge of the rusted flagship. He looked at the ghost of the woman who had saved his life. A tiny, painful spark tried to ignite inside his human chest. It was a memory of her pure white light. It was a memory of her beautiful sacrifice. The Overlord had taken her beautiful sacrifice and turned it into dirty magic. The dark god wanted Oliver to feel guilt. The Overlord knew that guilt made human hands shake. Guilt made commanders hesitate. Oliver did not hesitate. He forced the tiny spark of sadness deep into the locked metal box inside his mind. He turned the key. He became perfect

  • Chapter 923

The word bounced around inside his skull. “Murderer.” It did not sound like the booming voice of the Overlord. It did not sound like the cold, robotic hum of the System Administrator. It sounded exactly like his own voice. Commander Oliver fell to his knees on the glass floor. The terrible weight of a trillion erased lives crashed into his nervous system. He felt their final, silent screams burning inside his chest. He felt the terror of the mothers and the fathers. His human heart beat so violently it felt like it would break his ribs. His lungs gasped for air. He was drowning in a sudden, massive ocean of pure grief. He looked at Captain Iris. She was weeping on the floor, her hands covering her face. He wanted to reach out to her. He wanted to tell her that the math was a cruel lie. But a bright red warning light flashed inside his dark visor. [CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE. EMOTIONAL COMPROMISE DETECTED. PURGE IMMINENT.] Oliver closed his eyes. He forced the human feelings back

  • Chapter 922

The cold hand on Commander Oliver’s metal shoulder faded away. The frantic tapping on his spine stopped. The ghost of Billy from five seconds in the future vanished into the white light. The warning was clear. Run. Oliver did not run. A machine does not fear the future. A machine drives straight through it. The silver flagship tore out of the violent singularity. The massive fleet of human and mutant ships burst into the quiet, frozen space of Sector Zero. The roaring noise of the dimensional tunnel instantly died. Complete, absolute silence wrapped around the ships. Oliver stood at the front window of the command deck. His human gray eye and his burning red eye scanned the new battlefield. Sector Zero was not a normal sector of space. There were no stars here. There were no black holes or burning suns. The space was a topology of pure paradox. Huge waterfalls of black liquid flowed upside down into a white sky. Giant staircases made of glass twisted around each other, leading

  • Chapter 921

The silence of the engine room was not the silence of peace. It was the silence of a held breath before a scream. Oliver stood at the precipice of the command dais, his form casting a long, jagged shadow that seemed to bleed into the very metal of the ship. His right arm, a masterpiece of cold obsidian metal and pulsating violet light, twitched rhythmically. Inside his chest, the coin beat with the savage, heavy tempo of a trapped god. He could feel his humanity receding—a slow tide pulling back from the shore of his mind, leaving behind only the stark, jagged rocks of logic and cold directive. He looked at his soldiers. Miller was pale, his hands raw and bloody from the grip of his rifle. Vega’s eyes were glassy, her spirit hovering on the edge of a collapse that even the ship’s artificial gravity couldn't hold together. They were waiting for him to tell them a lie. They wanted him to tell them they would go home, that their children would grow up in the sun, and that the nightma

  • Chapter 920

The Solaris Bastion was a cathedral of cold iron and dying light. Outside the reinforced viewports, the universe had stopped. The red giant star, bloated and ancient, hung in the sky like an open wound, bleeding crimson radiance over the millions of ships that surrounded the Bastion. They were a fractured congregation, gathered from the ends of the multiverse. There were the jagged, rusted barges of the Sigma-12 rebels, their hulls scarred by plasma and salt. There were the sleek, golden warships of the Traveler Council, humming with ancient Builder resonance. And there were the phantom fleets, ships made of light, coral, and shifting geometry, survivors of worlds that had already been erased. Millions of souls stood on the flight decks of the flagship, their breath hitching in the thinning, pressurized air. They were all waiting. Commander Oliver walked toward the central broadcast array. His boots sounded like hammers against the metal floor. Each step felt heavier than the la

  • Chapter 919

The command deck of the silver Ark felt hollow, a cavernous space of cold metal and sterile silence. Oliver stood before the primary staging rack, his breathing shallow. The air here smelled of ozone and the ozone tasted like the end of all things. He looked down at his own body. It was a ruin. The right side of his frame was a jagged landscape of obsidian Wraithborn metal, the dark veins pulsing with a dying, hungry light. The left side was the ghost of a human man—pale, scarred, and trembling with the residual cold of the void. He was a bridge between two abysses, and the bridge was beginning to fracture.[Variable: Integrity.][Status: Failing.]The voice inside his head wasn't his own anymore. It was a chorus of the System, the coin, and a billion lost futures, all screaming for order. They wanted to be the shell. They wanted to be the law. He had to be the one to hold them back, to act as the thin, vibrating wire of humanity that kept the chaos from spilling into the stars. He re
