The gym basement didn’t smell like fear anymore. It smelled like sweat, ozone, and a strange, electric anticipation.

Ethan sat in his corner, his eyes closed. To anyone watching, he was just another survivor resting against the concrete. But in the violet-tinted reality of System Zero, he was a spider at the center of a massive web.

[Active Sentry: Void Seeker (Grade F) — Positioned at Perimeter.]

He could feel his "pet" Seeker crouching on the roof of the gym. Through its violet-linked eyes, Ethan watched the fog-shrouded streets. He saw a pack of smaller monsters scuttling past, and more importantly, he saw the flickering lights of a tactical flashlight three blocks away. Someone was coming.

Ethan opened his eyes and looked at the three hundred people staring at him.

The silence was heavy. Leo stood at the front, his father leaning on his shoulder. The guard, Miller, stood off to the side, looking at his own hands as if he didn't recognize them.

"The Lesser System told you that you were F-Class," Ethan began, his voice low but cutting through the hum of the generator. "It told you that your worth was tied to your mana capacity. It told you that you were meant to wait in the dark for a hero to save you."

He stood up, and the crowd collectively held their breath.

"The Lesser System is a lie," Ethan said. "It’s a flawed program designed by an entity that values efficiency over life. But I am an Administrator. And in my sector, there are no 'useless' assets."

He raised his hand. The violet light didn't just flicker this time—it expanded, a wave of digital distortion that swept across the entire room.

Ethan felt the drain immediately. It was like trying to hold up a collapsing roof with his bare hands. Sweat beaded on his forehead, but he didn't lower his arm.

Around the room, gasps turned into grunts of surprise. Old men stood up straight, the tremors in their hands vanishing. Mothers looked at their children not with despair, but with a sharp, calculating focus.

Leo dropped his father's arm. The older man didn't stumble. He took a deep breath, his lungs—once scarred by pneumonia—now clear and powerful.

"What did you do?" Miller whispered, staring at a floating notification in his own vision.

"I gave you a fighting chance," Ethan said, lowering his hand. "Miller, take ten men. There are crates of riot gear in the police sub-station across the street. My Seeker will clear the path. Go."

As Miller led the team out, Ethan checked his Authority.

[Warning: Mass Edit has depleted temporary reserves. Host requires rest or 'High-Density Malice' to recharge.]

He didn't have time for rest. On the roof, the Seeker let out a sharp, ultrasonic hiss.

The flashlight Ethan had seen earlier was closer now. It wasn't a monster. It was a man in a high-grade tactical vest, a shimmering blue 'C-Class' emblem glowing on his shoulder. He carried a recurve bow that hummed with magical energy.

[Entity: David Vance | Class: C-Class Scout | Affiliation: Holt Hunter Guild]

Vance. Mara’s brother.

The scout stopped at the gym entrance, looking at the dead Void Seekers Ethan’s pet had piled near the door. He pulled a radio from his belt. "Director, this is Vance. I've reached Shelter 4. It's clear. But the F-class stock... something is wrong. There are Grade-F corpses everywhere, but they aren't killed by hunters."

A voice crackled back—Director Holt’s voice. "Is the stock still there? We need the F-classes for the 'Mana Battery' ritual by dawn. If the shelter is compromised, move to Shelter 5."

"Checking now," Vance said.

Ethan watched through the Seeker’s eyes as David Vance kicked open the gym doors. He walked through the empty gym floor, reaching the basement door.

"Smells like... ozone," Vance muttered. He kicked the basement door open. "Alright, listen up, you useless—"

He stopped.

He was expecting to see three hundred terrified people. Instead, he found a silent, disciplined army. Three hundred pairs of eyes looked at him with an intensity that made his C-Class instincts scream.

And at the center of them sat Ethan Cole.

"David," Ethan said, his voice echoing. "You’re late. We’ve already cleared the building."

David Vance lowered his bow slightly. "Cole? The data entry guy? What the hell is going on here? Why is everyone standing like that?"

He raised his bow again, pointing a light-arrow at Ethan’s chest. "Director Holt sent me to collect the F-classes. You’re coming with me. We have a use for you."

"A 'Mana Battery' ritual," Ethan said flatly. "I heard."

David froze. "How did you—"

"I know a lot of things, David. I know your bow has a durability of 45/50. I know your 'Eagle Eye' skill is on cooldown. And I know that if you release that arrow, you’ll be dead before it hits the wall."

"You're an F-Class!" David roared. "You're a glitch!"

He released the string.

The arrow of light streaked across the room. Ethan didn't move.

A shadow dropped from the rafters. The Void Seeker intercepted the arrow mid-air, its violet-glowing hide absorbing the light as if it were a snack. The creature landed gracefully between Ethan and David, its multiple eyes fixed on the scout’s throat.

David Vance fell backward, his bow clattering. "A monster... you’re controlling a monster?"

"I told you," Ethan said, walking toward the trembling scout. "The Lesser System is a lie."

He leaned down, his eyes flashing with ancient violet light. "Go back to Holt. Tell him that Shelter 4 is no longer under his jurisdiction. Tell him that the 'stock' has been deleted."

Ethan reached out and tapped the C-Class emblem on David’s shoulder.

[Skill: DELETE (Restricted) — Target: Class Emblem]

The blue glow on David’s shoulder vanished into a cloud of grey pixels. The scout let out a strangled cry as his 'C-Class' status was stripped away, his body sagging as the System-granted strength fled his limbs.

"Now get out," Ethan said.

David Vance didn't wait. He scrambled to his feet and ran, his screams echoing all the way to the street.

Ethan turned back to his people. They were cheering now—a low, rhythmic sound that shook the foundations.

Ethan felt the power surge. The "Last Worker" was growing too fast for the world to ignore.

"Miller," Ethan called out.

The guard stepped forward. "Yes, sir?"

"Prepare the perimeter," Ethan said, looking toward the North District. "Tomorrow, we stop hiding."

  • Chapter 93: Splitting the Load

Miller found a second test target by midday — an old water pump in the same basement, dead since before activation, its internal architecture more tangled than the generator had been."Three failure points," he said, setting his notepad down and pointing at the machine. "I checked with Ren before I brought it down here. He says the old logic is a mess, multiple shutdown loops competing with each other instead of one clean failure.""That's what we want," Ethan said.Leo and Zara sat on either side of the pump, the way they normally sat for the harmonic, except this time there was no smooth correction happening between them. Both of them studied the architecture quietly, the same stillness they used for everything, while Ethan watched from a few feet back with Mara and Vale beside him."Three loops," Leo said after a moment. "Close together. I think I can see all of them, but I keep losing track of which one I was looking at first.""That's the problem we're trying to solve," Ethan sai

  • Chapter 92: The Test

Ethan walked Leo through the architecture slowly, the same way he'd taught himself to read it in the first place — one layer at a time, no assumptions about what should already be obvious. He showed him the disruption command structure first, not the live Protocol architecture, but a simplified version mapped onto the test target Miller had found in the building's basement: an old generator that had been dead since before activation, its internal logic layer still tangled with low-level System errors nobody had bothered to fix."This isn't dangerous to break," Ethan said. "Which makes it useful. I want you to find the equivalent of a transition point. A moment where the architecture shifts states, the way the Protocol's vulnerability points shifted between phases."Leo crouched near the generator and went quiet, the particular stillness he used when reading the logic layer instead of looking at it with his eyes. Zara stood a few feet back, watching without commenting, the way she usua

  • Chapter 91: What Repair Requires

Vale found Ethan in the morning before anyone else was awake. He had a folded sheet of paper in his hand and the particular stillness of a man who had spent the night thinking rather than sleeping. Ethan was at the table going through Miller's notes from the previous evening's briefing, and Vale sat down across from him without asking."I want to talk about repair," Vale said. "What it would actually require from their side.""Go ahead," Ethan said."You've assumed repair means another Protocol," Vale said. "It might. But the architecture of the original Protocol was built for a sector that had never disrupted it before. If they're repairing infrastructure now, after a confirmed failure, the redesign would account for what you did the first time." He unfolded the paper and slid it across the table. "I drew this from memory last night. The original Protocol had three vulnerability points because it was built efficiently, not defensively. A repaired version built to resist disruption wo

  • Chapter 90: Repair or Abandon

The full group gathered in the Water Authority building that evening.Ethan laid it out the same way he had laid out everything else since the Protocol arrived — plainly, without softening the parts that did not have a comfortable answer attached. Tier Two Review, repair or abandon, the possibility that even abandonment would not feel like a victory once the cost became clear."So either way, we lose the abilities," Soren said when Ethan finished. "Repair brings back full extraction and probably another Protocol. Abandon means the System shuts off entirely, including whatever's left holding our natural abilities together at the edges.""That's the representative's claim," Ethan said. "I have no way to verify it independently.""Could it be lying?" Kaelen said."It's possible," Ethan said. "But everything it's told us so far has checked out against what we've found ourselves. Felix's logs confirmed the Tier Two trigger timing. The petition mechanism behaved the way it described. I don'

  • Chapter 88: Two Open Reviews

Felix found the pattern at two in the morning. He had been cross-referencing every Type B-style entry he could identify against the dates in his own memory of the maritime station logs, working through the records with Ren beside him and Mara reading over his shoulder, when he stopped scrolling and sat very still."This is the same signature," he said.Ethan, who had been dozing in a chair across the room, opened his eyes immediately at the change in Felix's voice. "Same as what?""The entry from eight months ago. The one that triggered after the System activated and extraction output dropped." Felix turned the screen toward him. "It's the same structural pattern Zara described underground. Periodic confirmation, then something irregular layered underneath it." He pointed at a timestamp. "And it triggered again three days ago."Ethan came over and looked at the screen properly. "Three days ago. That's the day the representative arrived.""Or the day after," Ren said, checking the time
