As those words echoed in Nicolas’ ears, he could only come to two conclusions.
A prank. A mistake.
“Young master? Are you there?"
Nicolas felt a surge of headache. He let out a soft groan.”Can you stop with the joke?” He hissed, staggering to his feet.
“What joke?" The person on the other end of the line quipped, confused.
Nicolas leaned against a tree to steady himself, but he realized that… he didn't have to do that!
He pushed away from the tree and stared at his hands. His body hummed with an overwhelming strength. He felt the itch to burst into a race, the urge to outsource this insane energy he felt.
“Young master. Are you alright? We-”
"Who are you?” Pissed, Nicolas asked.
He was about to end the call, when he glanced around one more time.
“Look, I'm not sure where I am-"
"That's okay, young master. We've locked into your location through the energy fluctuations of your heirloom necklace."
"My heirloom-” Nicolas stopped when his hands automatically went to his necklace.
The necklace that had somehow always been his. He had always felt ridiculously attached to the piece of jewelry.
“You were able to locate me through my necklace?"
“Yes, young master."
What's with the title? “Okay."
“We will arrive in a few minutes.” There was a pause. Then Nicholas heard the whirr of something.
"We just took off, young master.”
“Okay.”
When the call ended, Nicolas glanced around. They said they'd be there in minutes. There wasn't even any visible road. How would they get to him? And in minutes?
It felt surreal, that conversation. What if they didn't come? What if it had all been in his head?
He decided to not sit still.
Since they could detect his location, he'd try to find his way. If they were real, they'd eventually find him.
Suddenly, he heard a loud sound, followed by, “Young master! Someone will get down to get you now."
Nicolas looked up and spotted two helicopters. Then, a ladder was thrown from the helicopter. Some people began to climb down.
Help had really come. He closed his palm around his necklace and muttered a thank you.
When they reached down, the only woman among them stepped forward. She grinned as she bowed. “Young master, it's a pleasure to finally meet you."
Nicolas starred, dumbfounded.
The woman raised her head. “I’m a servant of the Belford family. I was sent to escort you home.”
“The Belford family?" He asked as he eyed all of them.
"Every single thing you want to know will be explained to you, young master, but first, we need to get you out of here. It's unbefitting for your status." The woman gestured to the ladder. “Please, go first."
Nicolas began to climb the ladder. The woman and the others followed behind him.
Once they were all onboard, they all bowed before Nicolas.
“Welcome back, young master.”
“Thank you," Nicolas answered, grateful for their help.
They showed him to a seat that had been prepared for him.
“What family is the Belford family?" He inquired.
The woman smiled. "The Belford family possesses the greatest wealth and power in the world. And you belong to it.”
Nicolas nodded as he contemplated if he should ask her about the surge of power he had felt.
He glanced up at her and began, “Back there in the forest, I felt…” he tried to find the right words. "I felt some sort of strength. I felt energized…”
The woman’s smile was easy. "It's your power, young master. It comes from the bloodline inheritance of the Belford family. Soon, we will arrange for someone to teach you how to harness your strength.”
Nicolas nodded slowly. "What's your name?"
She smiled, “My name is Nora."
“Nora, you said I belong to the Belford family. How is that possible? I'm an orphan, no relatives. I think you might have gotten the wrong person.”
Nora's gaze fell on the necklace on Nicolas' neck. "You are the one, young master. That necklace can never belong to anyone else.”
Nora continued. "You were very young when you went missing. Since then, the Belford family has searched for you. Fortunately, your bloodline awakened recently and we were finally able to locate you.”
“So I went missing when I was young. I don't remember any of that."
"You'll get a more detailed explanation, either from your father or-”
Nicolas' ears perked up. "I have a father?”
Nora nodded. “He’s the head of the Belford family.”
Nicolas just stared at Nora for what felt like eons. He swallowed and finally asked, “Where is he?"
"He is currently engaged in a classified mission. You won't be able to meet him now.”
Nicolas sat by the window. As the helicopter descended, he was awestruck by the grand architectural complex outside. It was already dark, but every part of the complex was bathed in bright lights.
He turned to face Nora. “Is that where we're headed?"
Nora nodded with a smile. "That's the Belford family's estate."
Nicolas could only stare.
“The headquarters is ten times larger than this,” Nora chipped in as they stepped down from the helicopter.
How wealthy was this family?
Nicolas couldn't stop gaping at the building and the endless security team roaming about.
They led him to the exquisite living room and Nicolas admired the interior designs.
“Now that you've returned to the family,” Nora said, standing beside Nicolas', "you have the right
to inherit everything.”
Nicolas was shocked. “I can own all of these?"
"Yes, young master.”
“Goodness," Nicolas muttered. Now, the title made perfect sense. How had he gone from ‘Sarah's husband’ to ‘young master’ in a matter of hours?
“Tomorrow,” Nora continued, "we will officially announce your identity at Silvercrest Tower. It's one of the Belford family’s properties in the city.”
Nicolas stopped dead in his tracks.
“Silvercrest Tower?” He echoed. Wasn’t that the very place where his wife worked?

CHAPTER 128
High Mother had been certain that she would be prepared, if Nicholas ever got it into his head to attack her. Despite what she had said to Jerome, she wasn't actually so indifferent about the prospect of Nicholas coming to take revenge on her. She had doubled her security, increased the surveillance, and sent out shoot on sight orders to every soul in her house. In the end, it still wasn't enough. If it was, she wouldn't be standing in her room right now, listening to her two closest guards tell her that she had to escape."He has almost taken over the entire mansion," one of them was saying. "He'll be here soon. You have to leave, High Mother. You're not safe here."High Mother gritted her teeth. The last thing she wanted to do was run away from her own house just because of that brat, but she knew she had no choice."Fine," she said. "But I will make him pay for embarrassing me like this."There was a trapdoor hidden at the back of her walk-in closet, which had been designed specifi
CHAPTER 127
Nicholas's silence had gone on for quite a while, so Kabuto decided to speak."Are you going to do something about it, or what?" he said. "She could be dead before dusk. You just have to say the word.""Why is everything always murder with you?" Nicholas replied, exasperated. "You do know there are other ways to handle a situation, right?""Oh, come on," Kabuto said. "I get that you want to be a good person or whatever, but this woman killed your father. And if you let her get away with it, she'll kill you too. I'm pretty sure she's fair game at this point.""I am not killing anyone, and neither are you," Nicholas snapped.Keeping his cool was hard enough without this man saying such unhelpful things.Clearly, Kabuto couldn't take a hint, because he continued to run his mouth."What, you're not even going to try to avenge your father?" he said. "The patriarch would be very disappointed, you know. If the roles had been reversed, he would have done everything to make her pay for—""Get
CHAPTER 126
Most people assumed that the reason Nora was one of the best agents High Mother's orphanage had ever produced, was due to her intelligence and combat skills. And while they weren't entirely wrong, nobody else knew about her greatest weapon: her intuition. When her gut told her something, it was never wrong. And right now, her gut was telling her Nicholas was hiding something from her.Something huge.Even worse, it had all begun that day he went to the orphanage.'Did the High Mother say something to him?' she wondered. 'Something about me?'But no, that couldn't be it.While she didn't doubt that High Mother was the type to do such a thing, even out of spite, she didn't think that Nicholas would continue to let her hang around if he knew with certainty that she wasn't truly on his side. Which had to mean that he was suspecting her. Somehow, he had found out about her ties to the orphanage, and the trust he had for her had weakened.Nora knew that she couldn't have that. This whole mi
CHAPTER 125
Nicholas froze, staring at the picture. He wanted to tell himself that it wasn't her. That it couldn't possibly be her. It had to be someone else. Some other girl who looked a lot like her. Maybe even a relative. What did it matter if her name— Nora Ann— was right there next to the picture?People looked like other people all the time, after all, and even shared the same name. Nora and Ann were pretty common names. Anybody could have them.Distantly, Nicholas knew that he sounded delusional. He just couldn't accept that this was Nora. That Nora had been raised at this orphanage. Because if he did, then he'd also be forced to entertain the possibility that she wasn't who he thought she was."Looks like your loyal guard dog isn't so loyal after all," Kabuto remarked, peering over his shoulder at the book."And what are you suggesting?" Nicholas snapped, whirling on him. "That she's a double agent? That she's only been pretending to be on my side this whole time?""Whoa," Kabuto said, pu
CHAPTER 124
High Mother moved to stand, but Nicholas's cold words stopped her in her tracks."Sit down," he said. "We're not done talking."High Mother seemed to forget that she was supposed to be expressionless, and her eyebrows rose up almost to her forehead in surprise."What did you say?" she muttered in a quiet, menacing voice.Nicholas watched her, his eyes daring her to disobey. After a moment, she settled back into her seat and gave him one of her icy looks."I've heard a lot about you, Nicholas Belford," she said. "So far, everything I've heard is proving to be correct. You're a disrespectful, arrogant brat, who thinks that he's patriarch material just because he joined the Belford family like two minutes ago. And yet, despite being the worst of scum, you somehow believe you're superior to everyone else. Superior enough to have morals, to declare yourself some sort of ethical murderer. Well, then. Let's see if there's anything to your stupid values or if they're just empty words like eve
CHAPTER 123
Nicholas waited, but no other bullets followed the first one. He and Kabuto rose to their feet, only to meet several laser lights fixed on them from multiple directions."There's more than one sniper," Kabuto said."How surprising. I didn't notice that," Nicholas replied in a sarcastic tone. The clicking of high heels interrupted anything else Kabuto was going to say. Both of them turned to face the front door just as it swung slowly open in a dramatic way that had to be intentional. A woman stood, framed in the doorway and flanked by two hefty goons. A beautiful woman, with the sort of ageless face that seemed to make her look both fifty and twenty at the same time. She was dressed in a flowing mink coat, her hair in an elaborate updo. She held a fancy vape pen between two gloved fingers, and her expression was carefully blank.Nicholas didn't need to be told that this was High Mother."You've come a long way from home…" she said to Nicholas, "boy."'She knows who I am,' Nicholas rea
