Karvel stepped out of his car and closed the door softly.

He walked toward the door and pushed it open. The living room was dark, only the soft glow of the light showing the shape of the furniture. No sound. No movement.

“Elena?” he called out, his voice echoing a little.

No answer.

He walked deeper into the house, passing the kitchen, and stopping in front of their bedroom door. He pushed it open. The bed was untouched. Everything was in its place, but the room felt empty. He checked the balcony, the bathroom, everywhere.

Still nothing.

Just then, his phone rang. He looked down and his heart stopped for a second. Elena.

He answered immediately, not even waiting for the second ring.

“Elena? Where are you? I've been looking for you.”

Her voice came through the phone, but it was weak, shaking. “Karvel… I’ve been calling you. Why didn’t you pick up?”

“I didn’t see any calls,” Karvel said and stepped back into the living room. “What’s going on? I’m home now. Where are you?”
