"Kris, it's Alex. Do you have a minute to talk?"

"I'm standing in a hallway with forty empty boxes and a broken tape gun, so I have all the minutes in the world." Kris laughed, but it came out thin and tired, and behind her voice Alex could hear cardboard scraping across a concrete floor. "Is something wrong?"

"Nothing is wrong. Harold is moving his whole business away from Vivian Fashion, and he wants to start with me." Alex stood at the penthouse window with one hand in his pocket. "He wants finished garments, good ones, and he wants them within the month. I have a name, an empty room, and no stock at all. Do you have anything left from your old store?"

The line went quiet. He heard her breathing change, slow at first, and then a little faster.

"I do have something," she said carefully, like a woman afraid to hope out loud. "Before my partner ran off, I made a premium line for the spring launch. Wool coats, silk dresses, tailored blazers. Three thousand pieces. I paid the factory for that run with my own savings, and after the deposits were stolen I couldn't sell it, and I couldn't stand to dump it at half price."

"Where is it now?"

"In the back storage room of the shop." Her voice cracked on the last word. "Mr. Dunn's men wrote discard on every carton the morning before the dinner. If Jeff had not stepped in, all of it would have been in a dumpster by Friday."

"Don't let anyone touch those boxes. Harold's inspectors will come at nine tomorrow, and I want the storage room open."

"I'll sleep on top of the cartons if I have to," Kris answered, and this time her laugh sounded real.

The next morning, the third floor shop smelled of dust and cold cardboard. Three inspectors in gray jackets followed a small woman with silver hair and a magnifying glass on a chain. Her name was Mrs. Garner, and she had checked every shipment Harold's company had received for twenty years.

Behind her, two assistants rolled in a rack of coats tagged with the Vivian Fashion logo.

"Mr. Harold wants a side by side," Mrs. Garner told Alex without looking up. "Ms. Hale, open the first carton, please."

Kris slid a box cutter along the tape with trembling fingers and lifted out a charcoal wool coat. Mrs. Garner took it, turned it inside out, and ran her thumb along the seam as slowly as a doctor listening for a heartbeat. Then she did the same with the Vivian coat from the rack, and her mouth tightened.

"Look at this hem," she said to her assistants, holding it up like something she had found under a sink. "It wanders sideways like a drunk crab. And the lining is thinner than wet tissue paper. Whoever sewed this coat hated the person who would wear it."

"The buttons are glued, ma'am," one assistant added, and a button popped off in his fingers and rolled across the floor.

"Vivian Fashion charges us the price of a lion and delivers the goods of a sick goat." Mrs. Garner dropped the coat on the table with open disgust, and then lifted Kris's coat again. Her voice softened by a single degree. "Now this. Double stitched at every stress point. Hand finished buttonholes. Wool that will not pill after two winters."

She checked the silk dresses next, then a dozen more pieces pulled from the bottom of different cartons, while Kris stood against the wall with both hands pressed to her stomach, as if she were waiting for a verdict in a courtroom.

Finally Mrs. Garner lowered her magnifying glass.

"Ms. Hale, who supervised the production?"

"I did," Kris whispered. "I stood next to the cutters for three weeks. I made them redo the first fifty sleeves."

"Then I have been an inspector for twenty years, and this is the best work I have ever held in my hands." Mrs. Garner's eyes were sharp but warm. "Whoever stole your money stole it from the wrong woman."

Kris pressed her lips together hard, and turned her face toward the wall so no one would see her tears.

Alex watched her and said nothing. These clothes were never worthless. They had only been waiting for the right eyes.

Does that sound like a man who just wants a divorce? Or does it sound like a man who wants to create chaos at the worst possible moment?”Vivian’s expression flickered. The anger was still there, burning at the edges, but something else moved behind it, a question she did not want to ask but could not stop from forming.“What are you saying?”“I am saying that Alex knew those papers would surface eventually. He could have sent them to your home. He could have hired his own lawyer and filed through the courts. Instead he sent them here, to the company, where they would become part of the corporate record. And now, right before the IPO, a law firm is making noise about concealment and missing documents. This is not about a divorce, ma’am. This is about pressure. Alex wants you distracted. He wants you making emotional decisions while Aster is growing and Vivian Fashion is struggling. He is not trying to end the marriage. He is trying to end you.”Vivian stared at him. Her fingers curled

“Protect me.” Vivian came around the side of the desk, and her heels hit the floor with a sound that counted off the distance between them like a clock. “You hid my husband’s divorce papers in your desk, you deleted them from the company’s records, and you looked me in the face every single day for months knowing that the man I was still calling my husband had already tried to leave me. And you call that protection.”“I know I should have told you. I admit that. But at the time, the company needed your full attention. If I had handed you those papers while you were managing the supplier dispute and the retail contracts and the restructuring, it would have broken you. I was not trying to deceive you. I was trying to give you time.”“Time.” Vivian’s laugh was short and bitter, the sound of glass cracking. “You gave me time to walk around this city thinking Alex was still my husband while he was out there building a company, signing investors, and moving on with his life. You gave me tim

Lucas did not get the chance to decide on his own terms. The next morning, before he had even taken off his jacket, his phone buzzed with a message from Vivian’s assistant. Three words. “Her office. Now.”He walked down the corridor with his shoulders straight and his face arranged into something calm, but his stomach was turning in circles and the skin on the back of his neck was damp. Vivian’s office door was open. She was standing behind her desk with both hands flat on the surface and a printed letter in front of her that Lucas recognized before he was close enough to read it.Firmament Law. Their letterhead. Their language. Their questions.“Close the door,” Vivian said.Lucas closed it. The click of the latch sounded louder than it should have.Vivian picked up the letter and held it at arm’s length, the way someone holds something that smells wrong. “This arrived this morning. From a law firm called Firmament. They are inquiring about divorce papers that Alex apparently filed m

“Mr. Chen, I am going to be very clear with you. Firmament Law now has sufficient evidence to establish that Alex Morgan’s divorce papers were deliberately concealed from the intended recipient. The employee who processed the documents has provided a written statement and supporting records. Your own company’s legal department has flagged the discrepancy, and the documents you deleted from the system have been partially recovered through backup archives.”Lucas felt the blood leave his face the way color leaves a photograph left too long in the sun.“We expect a full and truthful accounting of your actions. If you choose to cooperate, that will be noted. If you continue to obstruct or mislead, we will proceed accordingly. I trust you understand the seriousness of this matter.”“I understand.”“Good. You will hear from us again, Mr. Chen. I would advise you not to destroy any further records. Anything you remove from this point forward will be treated as evidence of continued obstructio

“Then tell me what happened. Because right now I have an employee’s sworn statement, an email with your instructions, an intake log with your credentials on the deletion, and a legal notice from your own company’s department that cannot find the original documents. The only thing I do not have is a truthful explanation from you.”Lucas pressed his fingers against his forehead. The room felt smaller than it had when the call started, and every wall seemed to have moved a step closer while he was not paying attention.“Mr. Harris, Alex and Vivian were going through a difficult period. When those papers arrived, Vivian was already under enormous stress. The company was in the middle of a restructuring. She was managing a product launch, a supplier dispute, and three retail partnerships at the same time. I looked at those divorce papers and I made a judgment call. I believed they would reconcile. Every marriage goes through rough patches. Alex was angry, he filed the papers in the heat of

The silence on the phone lasted three seconds, but to Lucas it felt like the floor had opened beneath his chair and he was falling through it with nothing to grab.“I am sorry, who did you say you were?” Lucas kept his voice level, but his free hand gripped the edge of the desk so hard the wood pressed grooves into his palm.“Nathan Harris. Firmament Law. And I asked you a question, Mr. Chen. Why did you conceal Alex Morgan’s divorce papers from Vivian Sinclair?”“I did not conceal anything.” The words came out too fast, stumbling over each other like a man running down a staircase in the dark. “I handle paperwork for Mrs. Sinclair’s office. Hundreds of documents pass through my hands every month. If there was a processing error with a particular file, that is an administrative issue, not a deliberate act.”“A processing error.” Nathan repeated the words the way a teacher repeats a wrong answer to let the student hear how it sounds. “Is that your position?”“That is the truth. I have w
