Chapter 3: The Underdog Enters the Arena

The morning sun rose over the glittering spires of Sector 4, casting long dramatic shadows across the Grand Colosseum. Towering holographic billboards floated above the arena entrance, looping high-definition highlights of high-tier tamers and their monstrous companions. Tens of thousands of spectators flooded through the main gates, their cheers humming through the concrete grounds like a distant storm.

For the elite guilds, the District Novice Cup was a talent showroom, a place to flex wealth, display rare dragon breeds, and sign corporate sponsorships. For independent fighters, it was the only legal pathway out of poverty.

I stood near the edge of the registration plaza, my hands tucked deep into the pockets of my dark hoodie. I wore a simple pair of combat trousers and scuffed boots, standing out sharply against the sea of wealthy guild rookies clad in custom-fitted, elemental-resistant armor.

On my shoulder, Ian was disguised. Using a subtle passive trait of his newly awakened lineage, Ian compressed his silver-and-cyan armor scales back into the dull, ruffled grey coat of a standard Dust dragon. To anyone passing by, I looked like a confused shelter boy who had wandered onto the wrong battleground.

"Look at that guy," a rookie tamer in polished bronze armor chuckled to his teammate nearby. "Is he seriously bringing a house sparrow to a guild tournament? Did security let a spectator slip through?"

"Must be a filler contestant," the teammate sneered, adjusting the heavy leather collar on his C-Rank Iron-Hide Boar. "Easy points for whoever draws him in Round 1."

I ignored the whispers, keeping my gaze locked on the giant bracket screen hovering above the plaza center.

A chime sounded across the plaza speakers, crisp and authoritative.

"Attention all competitors! Registration for Block A is now closing. Please proceed through Gate 3 to receive your battle assignments."

I immediately stepped into the queue, pulling out the golden invitation badge I had taken from Chad Maryer the night before. As I scanned it at the automated gate, the scanner flashed bright green.

BEEP.

Participant Identified - Chad Maryer

Substitute- kin cancel. Entry Approved. Assigned to Arena 4, Match 2."

Inside the stadium's underground holding hall, dozens of young tamers were stretching, giving nutrient potions to their dragon, and reviewing battle strategies on their tablets. In the center of the room, surrounded by an entourage of attendants and healers, sat Gideon Vance,he had no relation to me but his the top-seeded favorite of the tournament and cousin to Chad. Gideon was leaning against the wall, a massive, eight-foot-long B-Rank Shadow Panther lounging lazily at his feet. The panther’s tail flicked, dark purple smoke curling off its claws.

Gideon glanced up, his cold eyes sweeping over the crowd until they landed on me. He frowned slightly, noticing the golden entry badge pinned to my jacket.

"You," Gideon called out, his deep voice easily cutting through the noise in the hall. The room fell quiet as attention shifted. "Where did you get that badge? That belongs to my cousin Chad. He didn't show up this morning, and his phone is off." He said he's voice sounding suspicious of me.

I stopped in my tracks, turning my head slowly. "He gave it to me." I replied

Gideon let out a dry, humorless laugh. His Shadow Panther stood up, lowering its head and letting out a deep rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.

"Chad wouldn't give a golden badge to a street cleaner with a trash bird," Gideon said, stepping forward. "What did you do?"

"He challenged me," I replied calmly, my posture relaxed despite the immense pressure radiating from the B-Rank panther. "He lost. The badge was the stake."

Snickers broke out among the surrounding guild members.

"Is this guy crazy?" someone laughed. "Chad’s Crimson dragon is a mid C Rank! A shelter cleaner beat him?"

Gideon’s expression darkened. He didn't believe I had beaten Chad in a fair fight, he assumed I had used a cheap trick or caught Chad off guard. "You've got a big mouth for someone standing in a room full of real tamers. Pray you don't cross my path in the ring, kid. My panther doesn't just knock beasts out, it tears them to pieces."

"I'll keep that in mind," I said quietly, turning my back on Gideon and walking toward the gate for Arena 4.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to Arena 4, Match 2!" The announcer’s voice boomed through the open air stadium speakers, answered by a roar from thousands of fans in the bleachers. "In the blue corner, representing the Iron Claw Association, we have the heavy hitting favorite: Bram steel Heart and his C-Rank Armored Rock Golem!"

The heavy iron portcullis on the far side of the dirt arena rolled up. A broad-shouldered young man stepped out, followed by a hulking six-foot-tall creature made of solid grey granite and glowing green moss. The ground shook with every step the stone beast took.

"And in the red corner..." The announcer paused, audibly confused as he read his clipboard. "A late entry... independent contestant, kin cancel, accompanied by... an E-Rank Dust dragon?!"

The stadium crowd erupted into confused laughter and scattered jeers.

"Is this a joke match?"

"Where’s his real beast?"

"That bird is going to turn into pebbles!"

Across the dirt field, Bram looked at me and shook his head with a pitying smirk. "Hey, kid! Yield now before my Golem steps on your dragon by accident. I don't want blood on my boots."

I stepped up to the edge of the tamer circle. I didn't look at the crowd, nor did I answer Bram. He reached up, lightly tapping Ian's chest.

"Let the noise fade, Ian,"I murmured. "Show them what we built."

Command Issued- Lineage Release 10%

Ian let out a high-pitched, clear cry that instantly silenced the arena's mockery.

FLASH!

The dull grey scales vanished in a burst of silver light. Ian expanded, his wings spanning nearly five feet, armor plated scales glistening in the bright morning sun like polished steel. Tiny blue arcs of lightning crackled along his talons, leaving scorch marks on the dirt ground beneath him.

The laughter in the stadium died instantly.

"What?!" Bram's jaw dropped. "That’s no Dust dragon! What kind of mutation is that?!"

The referee, stunned for a second, quickly raised his flag. "MATCH... BEGIN!"

"Golem, don't let it fly!" Bram yelled, panic leaking into his voice. "Rock Throw Crush it!"

The massive granite monster dug its thick stone hands into the dirt arena, ripping out a boulder the size of a trash can, and hurled it straight toward Ian with terrifying speed.

WHOOSH!

The boulder tore through the air, whistling loudly.

I didn't even raise my hand. "Ian, Wind Blade Dash." I commanded with full authority.

BOOM!

Ian vanished.

A sonic boom cracked through the arena as a silver blur sliced clean through the incoming boulder. The rock split into two perfect halves, exploding into harmless dust behind Ian.

Before the dust even hit the ground, Ian reemerged directly in front of the Rock Golem's face.

"So fast?!" Bram screamed. "Golem, defensive posture! Granite Shield!".He yelled.

The Rock-Golem crossed its heavy stone arms over its chest, its skin hardening into a dense, dark green mineral layer.

my eyes flickered with blue light.

"Ian," I called out, my voice ringing crisp across the silent stadium. "Target left shoulder joint. Lightning Wind Cutter."

Ian’s wings flared. The cyan wind energy surrounding his wings merged with the crackling electricity on his talons, forming a brilliant, humming blade of plasma infused air.

SLASH!

Ian zipped past the Golem in a flash of blinding light.

For a full second, nothing happened. The Golem stood frozen in its defensive stance.

Then, a thin, red-hot line appeared across the Golem’s left shoulder.

CRACK!

With a sickening crunch, the entire left arm and half the Golem’s chest slid off its body, shattering into worthless gravel on the arena floor. The core energy inside the stone beast flickered out, and the massive monster collapsed onto its knees, completely incapacitated.

The silence in the stadium was absolute.

Bram fell to his knees beside his ruined Golem, staring at the silver dragon soaring gracefully back to land on my shoulder. The announcer dropped his microphone, his mouth wide open.

In the VIP box high above the arena, a wealthy guild scout lowered his binoculars, his hands trembling slightly as he pulled out a tablet. "Find out who that boy is," the scout whispered into his comms. "Right now."

I turned my cold confident eyes toward the high-tier spectator boxes, my hand gently stroking Ian’s sleek silver crest.

Round I was over. And the entire city was finally watching.
