Chapter 4: Shattered Expectations

The roar of the crowd came in delayed waves, building from shocked whispers into a deafening wall of sound. Above Arena 4, the giant digital scoreboard flickered, updating the official tournament tree in bold red digits.

MATCH 2 WINNER- kin cancel INDEPENDENT

TIME ELAPSED-  4.2 SECONDS

In the announcer’s booth, the commentator fumbled with his headset, his voice cracking through the stadium speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen... a one hit knockout! Independent contender kin cancel advances to the Quarter-Finals with a jaw-dropping display of high-speed wind affinity!"

Down on the arena floor, I casually dusted off the sleeve of my jacket. Beside me, Ian let out a soft sharp trill, shrinking its silver-plated wings and letting the crackling cyan lightning die down.

I reached into my pocket and fed Ian a small, concentrated energy pellet, one I had bought with Chad Mercer’s stolen credits earlier that morning.

System Alert

Target- Storm Harrier Ian

EXP- 420 / 600 Level 7

Host Feedback Active- +5 Strength, +8 Perception

Note: Perception boost allows the host to track high-speed kinetic movements up to 120 mph.

I felt a sharp, cooling sensation behind my eyes. When I looked across the dirt ring, the dust motes hanging in the air seemed to move at half their normal speed. I could see the micro tremors in Bram’s hands as the fallen tamer recalled his shattered stone golem back into a grey soul-gem.

"How..." Bram muttered, staring at me with wide bloodshot eyes as medical personnel rushed onto the field. "That Golem’s defense score was over 80... Your dragon cut it like wet paper..."

I didn't answer. I turned on my heel and walked calmly toward the competitor tunnel, leaving the speechless crowd behind.

Inside the underground holding lounge, the atmosphere had completely shifted.

When I had walked out twenty minutes ago, the guild rookies had treated me like a joke, a sacrificial pawn destined to be crushed by Bram’s heavy golem. Now, as the heavy iron doors slid open and I stepped back into the corridor, every single conversation ground to a halt.

Dozens of elite guild prospects backed away, making a wide path for me. The arrogant smirks were gone, replaced by tense wary glares.

"Did you see that wind blade?" one rookie whispered, pulling his contract beast closer to his side. "He bypassed the golem’s mineral armor in a single strike."

"That’s not a standard Dust dragon," another muttered tightly. "That’s a mutated variant... or worse."

At the far end of the hall, Gideon Maryer stood with his arms crossed, his face dark as a thundercloud. Beside him, his massive B-Rank Shadow Panther let out a low, menacing growl, its purple shadow aura flaring nervously a clear sign that the beast felt genuine pressure from Ian’s ancient lineage.

Gideon sneered, stepping into my path as I approached the recovery area.

"A speed type dragon with high sharp force damage," Gideon said, his tone heavy and mocking. "Not bad for a shelter rat. But cutting up a stationary stone dummy is one thing. Facing a real predator is another."

I stopped three paces away, meeting Gideon’s gaze without a flinch. "You talk a lot for someone who hasn't stepped into the ring yet today." I said feeling relaxed.

Gideon’s jaw clenched, his fist tightening so hard his knuckles turned white. "Enjoy your little moment in the spotlight, kin. In the Quarter Finals, you’re drawing Soren Drake from the Viper Fang Guild. His twin venom serpents counter aerial beasts. Let’s see how fast your dragon flies when its wings are paralyzed by neurotoxin."

"We'll see," I said coolly, brushing past Gideon’s shoulder without another glance.

An hour passed quickly as the remaining Block A matches concluded.

I sat in a quiet corner of the contestant warm up room, meditating to allow the Host Feedback stats to fully merge with my body. Through the system panel, I could feel my own muscle density increasing, my reflexes refining with every level Ian gained.

PING.

The wall mounted monitor chimed, flashing the Quarter Final match pairings.

QUARTER FINAL MATCH 3

Kin cancel (INDEPENDENT) VS. SOREN DRAKE (VIPER FANG GUILD)

VENUE- ARENA 1 MAIN CENTER STAGE

"All Quarter Finalists report to Gate 1 immediately," the automated broadcast chimed.

I stood up, popping my neck, I let Ian perch comfortably on my shoulder. "Time to earn that second soul slot, Ian."

Arena 1 was five times larger than the preliminary rings, surrounded by fifty thousand screaming spectators and dozens of camera drones hovering overhead. Holographic screens displayed live betting odds, sponsor logos, and high-definition close-ups of the fighters.

In the VIP box high above the arena, a middle-aged man with dark slicked-back hair and a sharp suit leaned over the glass balcony. It was Director Drake, head of the Viper Fang Guild.

"Soren," Director Drake’s voice echoed through his son’s earpiece in the arena below. "That shelter boy embarrassed the Fire-Tiger Guild in Round 1. Don't give him room to breathe. Show the sponsors why our Viper-Fang beasts dominate the market."

On the dirt floor of Arena 1, Soren Drake smirked, adjusting his leather wrist guards. At his feet slithered two massive, six foot long C Rank Emerald Vipers. Their scales glistened with a greasy green coat, and viscous venom dripped from their needle-sharp fangs, sizzling as it hit the arena soil.

"Don't worry, Father," Soren whispered into his comms. "His dragon relies on speed and air pressure. My serpents use Miasma Fog. The moment that feather-ball swoops in, it will inhale poison and drop out of the sky."

Across the ring, I stepped into the fighter’s circle.

The crowd’s cheers were deafening, half the stadium now chanting my name after my viral Round 1 victory.

"REDFIELDS AND BLUEFIELDS READY!" the referee shouted, dropping his red flag. "MATCH... BEGIN!"

"Soren moves first!" Soren screamed instantly. "Venomous Miasma! Cover the field!"

Both Emerald Vipers reared back and opened their jaws wide. A thick dark green cloud of poisonous gas erupted from their throats, expanding rapidly across the arena floor like an avalanche! Within seconds, half the ring was enveloped in dense choking green fog, obscuring vision and sealing off the ground level.

"Haha!" Soren laughed, stepping back behind his fog bank. "Try flying through that! One breath of my miasma and your dragon’s lungs will melt!"

The spectators held their breath. From the stands, it looked like I was completely trapped.

I looked at the rolling wall of toxic green gas advancing toward me. Though I boosted Perception, I could see the thermal signatures of the two vipers slithering hidden beneath the fog, preparing to ambush from below.

"He thinks fog stops a storm," l murmured with a small, cold smile.

I raised my hand, pointing my index finger straight up toward the open sky above the stadium.

"Ian," I commanded. "Sovereign’s Gale- Atmospheric Inversion."

Ian let out an ear splitting scream that echoed off the stadium walls.

BOOM!

The silver dragon rocketed straight up fifty feet into the air. Spinning its wings like a high speed industrial turbine, Ian generated a massive, reverse atmospheric vacuum!

A roaring column of blue wind descended from the clouds above, striking the center of the arena like a falling hammer!

WHOOSH CRASH!

The hurricane force downburst slammed into the arena floor. The thick, poisonous green miasma didn't just disperse, it was violently crushed against the ground and blown entirely out of the stadium in a fraction of a second!

"WHAT?!" Soren gasped, his eyes bulging as the wind pressure knocked him to his knees, his hair whipped violently backward.

The toxic fog was completely gone, leaving both Emerald Vipers exposed, pinned flat against the dirt by the overwhelming air pressure radiating from Ian above.

I walked forward through the howling wind, my eyes glowing with a sharp, predatory blue light.

"You brought snakes to fight the sky," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the gale. "Bad choice."

High above, Ian’s wings flared with blinding cyan electricity.

Combo Skill Ready-  Thunder-Strike Dive.

"Finish it," I ordered with a smirk.

Ian folded its wings and dove straight down like a falling meteor.
