The elevator doors opened on the executive floor.
Adrian stepped out first.
Elena followed close behind.
Victor was already speaking to security through his phone.
“Lock down every exit,” Adrian said.
Victor nodded.
“Done.”
Adrian looked down the corridor.
Nothing appeared unusual.
The lights were on.
The offices were quiet.
Too quiet.
“Where was the alert triggered?” he asked.
“Archive room,” Victor replied.
Adrian's expression tightened.
The archive room was three doors away.
He walked toward it.
Elena caught his arm.
“Wait.”
Adrian stopped.
“What?”
She pointed toward the floor.
A thin trail of water ran from beneath the archive door.
Adrian crouched.
“It could be from the ventilation system.”
Elena shook her head.
“There isn't any water line above this section.”
Adrian stood.
He reached for the door handle.
“Stay behind me.”
Elena gave him a look.
“I don't need protection.”
“I didn't say you did.”
He opened the door.
The room was empty.
Cabinets lined the walls.
Several drawers were open.
Papers were scattered across the floor.
Adrian walked inside.
Victor followed.
“Nothing,” Victor said.
Adrian didn't answer.
He looked around slowly.
The room had been searched.
But whoever came here hadn't taken the obvious files.
He walked toward the largest cabinet.
One drawer was slightly open.
He pulled it out.
Inside was an old box.
His father's name was written across the top.
Richard Cole.
Adrian froze.
He lifted the box.
“That's it,” Victor said.
Adrian opened it.
Inside were old company records, photographs, and several handwritten notes.
Then he noticed something missing.
“The archive file.”
Victor frowned.
“What?”
“Archive 17.”
The box contained everything except the one file they had come looking for.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Adrian closed the box.
“Someone's here.”
Victor moved toward the door.
Elena reached for her phone.
The footsteps stopped.
A second later, the lights went out.
“Stay where you are,” Adrian said.
A metallic sound came from the corridor.
Someone was running.
Adrian moved.
He stepped into the hallway just as a man in a dark jacket turned the corner.
“Stop!”
The man ran.
Adrian chased him.
They reached the stairwell.
The intruder slammed the door behind him.
Adrian pushed through.
Two flights down, he caught up.
The man turned and swung.
Adrian blocked the punch.
The attacker struck again.
Adrian stepped aside.
He wasn't a trained fighter.
He didn't need to be.
The man was trying to escape, not win.
Adrian caught his wrist and drove him against the wall.
“Who sent you?”
The man said nothing.
Adrian tightened his grip.
“Where's Archive 17?”
The man's eyes changed.
That was enough.
Adrian knew he had the right person.
“Who has Daniel Cole?”
The man suddenly kicked Adrian's knee.
Adrian stumbled.
The attacker broke free and ran down the stairs.
By the time Adrian reached the ground floor, the emergency exit was swinging open.
He pushed through.
An empty alley waited outside.
The man was gone.
Adrian returned upstairs.
Victor was standing beside the archive room.
“You all right?”
“I'm fine.”
“Who was he?”
“Someone who knows about my father.”
Victor looked at the box.
“You found something?”
“Not what we need.”
Adrian opened it again.
A photograph slipped from beneath the papers.
He picked it up.
It showed his father standing outside a warehouse.
Three men stood beside him.
Adrian recognized one immediately.
Marcus Cole.
The second man was unfamiliar.
The third was partially hidden behind a vehicle.
On the back of the photograph, his father had written four words.
**Do not trust Marcus.**
Adrian stared at the message.
Victor leaned closer.
“When was that taken?”
“Eight years ago.”
“Before your father died?”
Adrian nodded.
Victor's expression changed.
“This could prove Marcus was lying about what happened.”
“Maybe.”
Adrian turned the photograph over again.
There was another line beneath the first.
**If anything happens to me, find the man from Blackstone.**
Adrian looked at Victor.
“Elijah Grant.”
Victor nodded slowly.
“The private creditor.”
Adrian slipped the photograph into his pocket.
“Find him.”
---
The next morning, Marcus walked into the boardroom expecting a fight.
Instead, he found Adrian already sitting at the table.
Elena stood beside him.
Victor had placed a stack of documents in front of every director.
Marcus stopped.
“What is this?”
Adrian looked up.
“The debt portfolio.”
Marcus stared at him.
“You don't own this company.”
“No.”
Adrian pushed a document across the table.
“But I own enough of its debt to decide what happens next.”
Marcus picked it up.
His face tightened.
“We can challenge this acquisition.”
“You can try.”
“We'll take this to court.”
“Then do it.”
Marcus stared at him.
“You think you're untouchable?”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed toward the financial statements.
“I think you're running out of options.”
A director opened one of the folders.
“Mr. Cole…”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
“This transfer is legal.”
Another director checked the documents.
“So is this one.”
The room became uneasy.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“What exactly do you want?”
Adrian leaned back.
“The truth.”
“About what?”
“My father.”
Marcus laughed.
“This again?”
“You know what I'm talking about.”
“I don't.”
“Then explain the warehouse.”
Marcus went silent.
Adrian watched him carefully.
“You were there.”
Marcus's face hardened.
“That's your evidence?”
“A photograph.”
“Photographs don't prove anything.”
“Neither did the accusations you made against me eight years ago.”
The room fell silent.
Marcus looked around the table.
No one spoke.
Adrian stood.
“I'll give you forty-eight hours.”
“For what?”
“To explain where my inheritance went.”
Marcus scoffed.
“And if I don't?”
Adrian looked directly at him.
“Then I stop asking.”
He turned toward the door.
Marcus called after him.
“You're making a mistake.”
Adrian stopped.
“No.”
He looked back.
“You made yours eight years ago.”
Adrian walked out.
Marcus remained in the boardroom.
One of the directors slowly removed his glasses.
“Marcus…”
“Not now.”
“We need to discuss the banks.”
Marcus slammed his hand on the table.
“I said not now!”
The directors fell silent.
But the damage was already done.
They had seen Marcus lose control.
And Adrian had walked out with something more valuable than a threat.
He had their attention.
---
That evening, Adrian stood alone in his office.
Elena entered without knocking.
“You were right.”
Adrian looked up.
“About what?”
“Blackstone.”
She placed a file on his desk.
“Elijah Grant disappeared six months ago.”
Adrian opened it.
“Disappeared?”
“No public appearances. No interviews. His company is being managed by a temporary board.”
“Where is he?”
“We don't know.”
Adrian looked at the photograph of his father.
Then at the name on the file.
Elijah Grant.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
Adrian answered.
No one spoke.
Then a man's voice whispered:
“Stop looking for Daniel.”
Adrian stood.
“Who is this?”
“Your father made the same mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He trusted the wrong people.”
The call ended.
Adrian immediately called Victor.
“Trace that number.”
“We're trying.”
Adrian looked through the glass wall of his office.
The city stretched beneath him.
Eight years ago, he had been powerless.
Today, he controlled a growing business empire and a significant portion of his family's debt.
Yet someone had just threatened him using his father's name.
His phone vibrated again.
This time, there was a photograph.
Daniel was sitting in a dark room.
His face was bruised.
And beside him stood a man Adrian had never seen before.
A message appeared beneath the photograph.
**Forty-eight hours is too long.**
**You have until midnight.**

But whoever sent it had access to an internal security terminal.”Adrian walked toward the glass wall overlooking the city.Apex Meridian had taken years to build. He had trusted very few people with it.Richard had taught him that trust wasn't something you gave because someone seemed loyal.
