chapter 67

It was so obvious that I wanted to get Emma to talk more about Victoria.

“Is that all you know?” I asked her while she smiled at me.

“Yes but I believe they'd have more information very soon too.” She nodded. “So can I see Lily now?” She asked.

I didn't like that she was asking so boldly about Lily. I still wanted to know the reason she had shown up without calling me but I didn't want to sound harsh. Not at all.

At this point, Emma was doing me a favour. I mean I know I can't trust her fully but I knew she wouldn't lie about this.

“You should have texted that you were coming.. what if I wasn't home.”

She turned sharply at me like she didn't expect me to say that. “Why wouldn't you be home?” She asked, confidently.

“I mean I could have travelled. I could be at the office or anywhere at all.” I was trying to make her understand so she wouldn't have to show up here without letting me know.

“Why are you whispering?” She asked me.

I paused for a while. “Whispering?”

“Yes, you are whispering. Why is that?” She looked at me with her eyebrows narrowed. “You talk like you don't want someone hearing you. Is that right?”

“No.” I said, looking away.

“Or are you hiding something, anything at all.” She started looking around my office but she couldn't find anything. “Or do you probably have a woman here that you are hiding.”

She stood up now, checking all the hidden corners of my room. I had thought that this was a joke but it wasn't. She was seriously looking out for a woman in my room.

“Are you serious right now?” I asked her but she kept on searching with her eyes.

I decided not to say anything else and see where this finally takes us.

“I know that there's a woman here but I just can't prove it.” She stood with her hands on her waist. She looked

This was crazier than I thought.

She actually believed it.

“Or isn't there? I wonder then, why you are so eager to ask me why I showed up in the first place.”

“It's not wrong that I'm asking you that, Emma. I mean you showed up without letting me know.” I said again, careful not to sound too harsh. Emma might seem annoying but she was the only one giving me great accurate information.

I had already started thinking of the next thing to do about Victoria.

“When are you going to let me see Lily?” She asked me. She was already getting up. “Maybe I could tell you more during lunch.”

Emma was not going to give up.

“Why don't you tell me more and then, I'll ask Mrs. Park to make you some food, what would you like to eat?” I was ready to call Mrs. Park into the room so she could take Emma's food orders but she didn't seem interested in that offer.

“Why does it look like you are trying to hide something from me or someone from me?”

Emma was acting mysterious and asking questions that even I found awkward and weird. I didn't want her to see Lily.

I didn't want Lily to get attached to her so I was trying to protect the little girl's heart. Emma looked up at me with kind eyes which was weird because Emma could not be considered as kind.

“I understand what you are trying to do, Ethan but I promise you that you don't have to worry.” She paused, maybe giving me the chance to comprehend what she was about to say. “I'll never hurt Lily..”

“And who's talking about hurting her?” My voice was a bit raised and I'm sure that Emma wasn't expecting that. She must have been shocked to hear me.

“That's not what I mean?” She raised her hands in defence, then suddenly she started laughing calmly. It was a small laugh, one that wasn't intended to hurt me.

It made me remember those days when we were together, when we were truly happy. When everything hadn't yet fallen apart. She always looked pretty when she smiled. We were meant to be together or so I thought.

Looking at her laugh, I didn't regret that we didn't work.. if we did, then maybe I wouldn't be here, I wouldn't know that I had so much potential inside me.

So maybe all that hurt I faced was ready for good. Maybe all the embarrassment the Pierce family caused me was all for the best, maybe that was God preparing me for greater things like this.

“You are not listening to me.” Emma said, calling my attention. I wondered how many things she had said before she finally realized that I wasn't even listening to her.

“What did you say?”

“Did you hear that? That is my stomach asking you to feed it. Aren't you going to listen to it at least.”

I nodded. All I was going to do was take her downstairs, have Mrs. Park serve her some food and then get her to talk more.

Victoria was my problem now, not Emma. I led her downstairs to go have some food. She seemed happy that her wish was coming to pass but it didn't matter to me. I had a goal.

As we went down slowly, my mind drifted off years ago when I watched my mother slave her life for the Pierce family. That was literally the only thing I always regret.

That my lovely mother didn't get the chance to live with me and be here when I was finally enjoying everything we always wanted. She had always encouraged me more than anyone in this world.

She made me realize that I could get anything I want. She encouraged me, she made me see the good in life and that is why I still haven't transformed into the monster that Victoria wants me to be.

I came home that evening with nothing left inside me. Not in a bad way exactly. Just empty. The way you feel after carrying something heavy for a long distance and finally putting it down. My arms felt lighter but everything else in me felt tired in a deep way that sleep alone could not fix. I went straight to the study. I did not turn on the big light. I just sat in the chair near the window with the small lamp on and looked out at the garden. The butterfly garlands were moving slowly in the evening wind. I watched them without really watching them. My mind was somewhere else. I kept hearing Marcus's voice in my head. I had built a life. Everything I had was connected to my wife. I was not willing to pay that price. I thought about how strange it was to finally hear the truth from him. For so many years I had wanted him to say something honest to me. Even one sentence. And today he had said many honest things in front of strangers in a courtroom but it still did not feel like

The courthouse felt different on Wednesday morning. Not the building itself. The building was exactly the same. The marble corridor. The security check. The particular indoor quiet of a place doing something important. But the energy in the courtroom was different when I walked in. Like everyone in the room already understood that today was going to be the kind of day that sat differently in the memory from the other days.I found my seat.Henry on my left.Yemi on my right. She looked at me briefly when I sat down. She did not say anything. She did not need to. She just looked at me with those steady eyes of hers that always seemed to know the exact right amount to say without words and then she looked forward. That has recently been the habit she did. To always look at me like she was reassuring me. Like she was promising me to be strong and that everything would turn out well. I looked f

The next day, which was on a Wednesday, was going to be hectic, I already knew judging from the way I felt. After the call with Yemi, I was calm but after that, a few minutes later, the anxiety returned.Tomorrow was different. On Monday, it was the beginning, today was Dr. Chan who truly made me proud but Wednesday is very personal in a way that the other two days weren't. According to Patricia, another witness was coming up and it was Marcus. My father even though I don't regard him as one anymore. He was the one who had chosen not to stand by his wife or his son even when they needed him. He was the one who made me hate him so much. The man who should have protected my mother but chose not to.I finally slept that night but that was after 5 hours of turning and twisting on the bed. I was already having a headache when I got up. It wasn't surprising since I was thinking so much last night. When I went downstairs for some hot tea, I saw Lily at the table again. It was still ver

She was growing and it was the best thing I had ever watched happen. After the table was cleared she sat back down and looked at me."Are you going to call Yemi tonight?" she asked.I looked at her."Why would I do that?" I said. She blinked at me slowly."Because you always do," she said. "And because you look like you need to talk to someone and Henry has already done his talking for the day and I am going to bed soon."Henry made a small sound."You are extremely observant," I told her."I know," she said. "It is one of my best qualities."She stood up and collected her rabbit from the chair beside her.She came around the table and stood beside me.I looked at her.She reached up and put her small hand briefly on my shoulder the way an adult might do it. Just once. Like she was patting down something that had come loose. Then she said goodnight to Henry and goodnight to Mrs Park and went upstairs.I sat at the table.Henry drank his tea."She is remarkable," he said quietly."Yes,

Carver paused for a moment. Then he sat down.Patricia stood for a brief redirect. She asked only one question."Dr Chen," she said. "In your twenty years of medical practice before and after this case, have you ever seen the compound you identified in Sarah Blackwell's blood occurring naturally in any patient?""No," Dr Chen said. "Never.""Thank you," Patricia said. "No further questions."Dr Chen stepped down from the stand. She walked past the defence table.Victoria did not look at her.Dr Chen did not look at Victoria either. She walked to the exit and was gone.I watched her go.I thought about her sitting across from me in a dark park handing me an envelope. About the guilt she had been carrying for twenty years. About the decision she had made as a young frightened doctor that had cost my mother everything and had cost Dr Chen her peace of mind for two decades. She had come. She had told the truth. Whatever else was true about her that was also true and I had not forgotten it
