chapter 76

The next morning, I woke up with a little headache. I guess it was going to be a bad day, after all. I got up to go get coffee so I could drink and maybe get this terrible headache out of the way.

Mrs. Pack was already in the kitchen. She was making pancakes for Lily to eat so she could get to school on time.

“Brother.” She literally screamed at me. “You're late.”

“Late? For what?” I turned around, afraid I might have done something without knowing.

“You're late for everything.” She laughed. That was when I knew that she was trying to get to me.

“You and your silly pranks.” I rolled my eyes at her.

“They are not silly, Brother. You just fall for them every single time.”

“I don't.” I jeered back at her. Of course she was right, I always fell for her silly naughty tricks but I wasn't going to admit it. “Go to school.”

“Of course, I will.”

“Do you want some coffee, Sir Ethan, would you like some?”

Mrs. Pack asked me. She knew me so well. I always come down for coffee first before anything else.

“Yes, thank you.”

I went to sit down opposite Lily who seemed so glad to be going to school today.

“Why do you seem so happy?” I smirked at her, waiting for an explanation.

“Nothing. Can't I be excited to go to school?” Lily asked me.

She was right. There was really nothing wrong with being excited to go to school. I mean when I was her age, I was excited, only that I didn't have the means to go to school and be that happy.

“Yimmy will be following me to school today and I asked her to come pick me up today.”

“Hmm?” I looked up at Lily, she was already making decisions like this by herself, I couldn't understand it. I was about to say something when she interrupted.

“I know. I know that I should talk to you first, I know that but it's Yemi and you like her.”

“And who says I like her?” I turned sharply to Lily, almost choking on the coffee that Mrs. Pack had offered me.

“I know. You don't have to pretend in front of me. You don't have to do that.”

“And who says I'm pretending?”

“I know that Mrs Park knows you like Aunt Yemi even Henry knows.” She turned to me and nodded. “Even Aunt Yemi knows, you don't need to pretend.”

“Really?” I looked at her again. “Really? Is that all you have to say to your uncle?”

It felt so crazy that my own little niece could say that to me, Lily was so observant so she must have noticed. When I was her age, I didn't have the opportunity to notice even a thing.

“You should go to school.”

She dropped her spoon on her plates. “Okay sir.” Sue responded with a smile and drank water from the glass cup beside her.

“I'm waiting for Aunt Yemi…” she was still talking when we heard a knock on the door. “It must be her, I guess.”

She was right.

Yemi was looking even prettier even though she was dressed in a short gown. It was really nothing over the board, she was just a pretty lady.

“Hi.” She smiled at me when she walked into the kitchen. “How are you doing?”

Her smile was out of the world.

“I'm doing well.” I said, not trying to sound too excited. I was going to look away when I saw that Lily was literally glaring at me.

Literally.

I gave her those eyes that said: mind your business and she gave a quirky smile.

“I'm sorry we didn't tell you about our arrangements.” She was talking about taking Lily to school. “I should have asked you first and that is why I'm here.”

Hearing her talk made me want to hug her. She was so understanding and kind.

Lily was already dragging her out of the room. “You guys can talk later. Let's go or I'll be late.” She turned to Lily. “You can even go to his workplace so you guys can talk.”

She rolled her eyes at me and walked away with Yemi holding her hands. I could see the joy in his eyes. Of course, she was always a joyful child but this was different. It felt like there was a new light lit up in her eyes every time she saw Yemi.

“Goodbye, Brother.”

“Goodbye.” I waved back at her and turned to nod at Yemi but she wasn't looking at me. She was rather looking at Lily, smiling down at him.

They had gotten so close that it was difficult to know that they weren't sisters. Lily was so happy.

Henry came to my office later in the day when Yemi and Lily had already left for school. I was already back at my office when he came up.

He knocked twice which was what he always did. Not once like the staff usually did. Just twice. It was like he was being careful and deliberate just like everything Henry did.

"Come in," I said.

He came in and closed the door behind him. He was carrying a folder and a cup of tea which he placed on my desk before sitting down. He liked it, which was weird because I had always pictured men like Henry, loved coffee.

But I guess I was wrong.

I looked at the folder.

"Margaret Vane?" I asked.

"Margaret Vane," he confirmed.

He opened the folder and placed three pages on the desk in front of me. He arranged them in a specific order the way he would usually arrange things. I'd never seen anyone arrange or handle anything like Henry.

I picked up the first page.

It was a report from Henry's contact. Henry must have trained him well because the report was straight to the point with no long paragraph and speech.

According to the report, everything had happened very fast and only a few people noticed it.

I watched them without really watching them. My mind was somewhere else. I kept hearing Marcus's voice in my head. I had built a life. Everything I had was connected to my wife. I was not willing to pay that price. I thought about how strange it was to finally hear the truth from him. For so many years I had wanted him to say something honest to me. Even one sentence. And today he had said many honest things in front of strangers in a courtroom but it still did not feel like

The courthouse felt different on Wednesday morning. Not the building itself. The building was exactly the same. The marble corridor. The security check. The particular indoor quiet of a place doing something important. But the energy in the courtroom was different when I walked in. Like everyone in the room already understood that today was going to be the kind of day that sat differently in the memory from the other days.I found my seat.Henry on my left.Yemi on my right. She looked at me briefly when I sat down. She did not say anything. She did not need to. She just looked at me with those steady eyes of hers that always seemed to know the exact right amount to say without words and then she looked forward. That has recently been the habit she did. To always look at me like she was reassuring me. Like she was promising me to be strong and that everything would turn out well. I looked f

The next day, which was on a Wednesday, was going to be hectic, I already knew judging from the way I felt. After the call with Yemi, I was calm but after that, a few minutes later, the anxiety returned.Tomorrow was different. On Monday, it was the beginning, today was Dr. Chan who truly made me proud but Wednesday is very personal in a way that the other two days weren't. According to Patricia, another witness was coming up and it was Marcus. My father even though I don't regard him as one anymore. He was the one who had chosen not to stand by his wife or his son even when they needed him. He was the one who made me hate him so much. The man who should have protected my mother but chose not to.I finally slept that night but that was after 5 hours of turning and twisting on the bed. I was already having a headache when I got up. It wasn't surprising since I was thinking so much last night. When I went downstairs for some hot tea, I saw Lily at the table again. It was still ver

She was growing and it was the best thing I had ever watched happen. After the table was cleared she sat back down and looked at me."Are you going to call Yemi tonight?" she asked.I looked at her."Why would I do that?" I said. She blinked at me slowly."Because you always do," she said. "And because you look like you need to talk to someone and Henry has already done his talking for the day and I am going to bed soon."Henry made a small sound."You are extremely observant," I told her."I know," she said. "It is one of my best qualities."She stood up and collected her rabbit from the chair beside her.She came around the table and stood beside me.I looked at her.She reached up and put her small hand briefly on my shoulder the way an adult might do it. Just once. Like she was patting down something that had come loose. Then she said goodnight to Henry and goodnight to Mrs Park and went upstairs.I sat at the table.Henry drank his tea."She is remarkable," he said quietly."Yes,

Carver paused for a moment. Then he sat down.Patricia stood for a brief redirect. She asked only one question."Dr Chen," she said. "In your twenty years of medical practice before and after this case, have you ever seen the compound you identified in Sarah Blackwell's blood occurring naturally in any patient?""No," Dr Chen said. "Never.""Thank you," Patricia said. "No further questions."Dr Chen stepped down from the stand. She walked past the defence table.Victoria did not look at her.Dr Chen did not look at Victoria either. She walked to the exit and was gone.I watched her go.I thought about her sitting across from me in a dark park handing me an envelope. About the guilt she had been carrying for twenty years. About the decision she had made as a young frightened doctor that had cost my mother everything and had cost Dr Chen her peace of mind for two decades. She had come. She had told the truth. Whatever else was true about her that was also true and I had not forgotten it
