The location came to Noah the way most useful things had come to him lately, through Sable, delivered with the particular bluntness of someone who charged for information and preferred not to waste time softening it.

"There's a place in the old quarter," she said, sliding a hand-drawn map across her counter, "that used to be marked on official maps four hundred years ago and hasn't been marked on anything since. Locals call it the Ashfall Ruins. Nobody goes there. Not because it's forbidden, exactly. More because everyone who's tried has come back saying the place doesn't want visitors."

"And you think it's connected to House Kane."

"I think a pendant that shows you visions of a woman in a stone hall probably came from somewhere real," Sable said. "And I think a hall like the one you described doesn't just disappear. It gets buried, or hidden, or cursed enough that people stop looking for it." She tapped the map. "If your family's fall left any physical trace in this city, that's where I'd bet on finding it."

"Have you been there yourself."

Something flickered across Sable's face, quick and carefully smoothed away. "Once. A long time ago, before I understood what I was walking into. I didn't stay long enough to find anything useful, and I didn't go back. Some places carry enough grief in the stone itself that the living aren't meant to linger." She met his eyes. "You might be the exception. Blood tends to make its own rules about who's welcome and who isn't."

Noah folded the map into his pocket, and the pendant against his chest gave the faintest pulse of warmth, as if in confirmation.

The Ashfall Ruins sat at the edge of the old quarter, a collapsed sprawl of stonework so overgrown with black ivy that it took Noah nearly an hour of careful searching to find the entrance Sable's map promised was there. The old quarter itself felt like a different city entirely from the one he'd learned to navigate this past week, buildings here older, their architecture carrying details he didn't recognize from anything Blackwood had taught him, crescents worked into cornerstones and doorframes with a consistency that felt less like coincidence and more like an entire district that had once belonged, wholly, to a bloodline the rest of the city had spent four centuries trying to forget.

When he finally found the entrance, a half-collapsed archway sunk into a hillside thick with roots, the air around it carried a stillness that felt deliberate rather than accidental, the kind of quiet that came from a place actively holding its breath.

He stepped through, and the pendant flared to sudden, urgent life.

QUEST UPDATE: House Kane Origin Site Located.

Bloodline Resonance: Critical.

The archway opened into a hall that matched the vision from his fight with Kellan almost exactly, though centuries of collapse and decay had stripped away most of what must have once been grandeur. Pale stone columns, cracked and half swallowed by roots, stretched up toward a ceiling long since caved in, and moonlight fell through the gaps in long silver columns that lit the ruined floor like something out of a dream he hadn't known he was capable of having.

At the center of the hall stood the remains of a dais, and on it, barely visible beneath centuries of dust, a symbol matched exactly to the crescent on his pendant.

Noah crossed the ruined floor slowly, some instinct older than caution making him move with a reverence he didn't fully understand, and knelt before the dais. The moment his hand touched the stone, the vision returned, fuller this time, more than a fragment.

The hall as it had been, whole and lit with silver torches, filled with wolves in formal dress bearing the same crescent mark he carried. Music he couldn't hear but somehow felt, a celebration in full swing, children weaving between the legs of adults too absorbed in conversation and laughter to scold them for it. The woman with the crown, closer now, her face achingly familiar in a way that made his chest tighten with a grief he had no memory to justify. She was speaking to someone just out of the vision's focus, her expression warm, unguarded, the face of someone who had no reason yet to fear the night ahead of her.

And behind her, in shadow at the edge of the hall, a figure whose face refused to resolve no matter how hard Noah tried to focus on it, wearing the sigil of one of the Twelve Houses stitched into the collar of an otherwise unmarked cloak. The figure moved through the celebration with an ease that spoke of long familiarity, greeted by name by wolves who trusted them enough to turn their backs without a second thought.

The vision shattered into fire and screaming before he could see more, the hall collapsing around figures he couldn't save, the woman's voice rising above the chaos in a single desperate command he couldn't quite make out, something about a child and a door and a promise that had to survive even if nothing else did. Noah felt himself reaching toward her across the vision's fracturing edges, some part of him desperate to close a distance four hundred years wide, and found only smoke and collapsing stone where her outstretched hand had been.

Noah came back to himself gasping, hands braced against cold stone, the ruined hall silent and empty around him once more.

QUEST COMPLETE: Locate the Fall of House Kane.

REWARD: Bloodline Awareness +8%. New Skill: Ashen Sight.

NEW QUEST AVAILABLE: Identify the Betrayer's House.

Ashen Sight. He didn't know yet what the skill did, but the name alone settled into him with a weight that felt like promise and threat in equal measure. He had seen the sigil. He hadn't been able to make out which of the Twelve it belonged to, the vision too fractured, too desperate, to hold the detail steady long enough for him to read it.

But he had seen enough to know, with a certainty that turned his stomach, that whoever had ended House Kane four hundred years ago hadn't been a stranger to it. They had stood inside that hall, welcomed by whatever ceremony had gathered every wolf wearing the crescent in one place at one time, and had worn a mask of belonging right up until the moment the fire started.

Noah rose from the dais on unsteady legs, the ruined hall around him no longer feeling merely empty but watchful, as though the stones themselves remembered exactly what had happened here and were waiting to see what he intended to do about it.

Somewhere behind him, at the mouth of the collapsed archway, a shape shifted in the moonlight that hadn't been there when he entered, and Noah's every instinct, ancestral and newly awakened alike, screamed the same warning at once.

He wasn't alone in the ruins anymore

  • CHAPTER 20: THE FIRST ALLIANCE

Sable returned as the night wore toward its coldest hour, slipping back through the narrow door with the particular quiet of someone who'd been listening at its edge and had heard enough to know the conversation inside had changed everything."There's more you need to know before you decide what to do with what Marisol's shown you," she said, setting a fresh set of documents on the table, these ones newer, their edges crisp rather than brittle with age. "While you've been down here uncovering four-hundred-year-old secrets, the present has kept moving. Alpha Voss has sent a formal offer through back channels. She wants a meeting. Neutral ground, her terms, an alliance discussion rather than an assassination attempt.""You don't trust it," Noah said, reading the tension in Sable's posture before she'd finished speaking."I don't trust anyone offering an alliance to someone they tried to kill three days ago without expecting something significant in return." Sable crossed her arms. "But

  • CHAPTER 19: BLOOD DOESN'T LIE

The silence that followed lasted long enough that Noah could hear his own pulse in his ears, could feel the pendant against his chest go still and cold in a way it hadn't since the ruins."That's not possible," Lyra said, and the crack in her voice told Noah she didn't fully believe her own denial even as she made it. "My family has held the compact's first seat for generations. We've enforced it. We've protected it. If we'd been the ones to break it in the first place, why would we spend four hundred years defending the very thing our own betrayal made necessary.""Guilt makes excellent architects," Marisol said, not unkindly, though the words landed like a blow regardless. "Who better to guard a secret than the House with the most to lose if it ever came out? Your family didn't just survive the fall of House Kane, girl. Your family built an entire empire on making sure nobody ever asked the right questions about it."Dorren leaned forward, his old soldier's face grave. "I served Hou

  • CHAPTER 18: THOSE WHO REMEMBERED

The room beyond the door was small, low-ceilinged, lit by lanterns that burned with the same faint silver quality Noah had seen in his vision of the ruined hall, and it took him a moment to understand why that detail mattered.Three other figures sat around the table besides the woman closest to the door, and Noah's newly sharpened senses cataloged them without conscious effort. An older man near the back, his posture carrying the particular rigidity of someone who had once served in a formal capacity, perhaps a guard or soldier, whose eyes tracked Noah's every movement with professional wariness rather than open hostility. A younger woman closer to Lyra's age, dark-eyed and watchful, a hand resting near a blade at her hip in a way that suggested she trusted the room's occupants exactly as far as necessary and not an inch further. And a third figure, younger still, barely more than a boy, who stared at Noah with an expression somewhere between fear and desperate hope, the particular l

  • CHAPTER 17: THE SILENT WARNING

The footsteps belonged to Sable, breathless in a way Noah had never seen from her, her usual unbothered composure replaced with something sharper and far more urgent."You need to move," she said, not bothering with greeting, her eyes flicking once toward Lyra with an assessment Noah couldn't quite read. "Both of you. Now.""What happened." Noah was already moving toward her, the pendant's warmth fading as his attention snapped fully into the present."Word's spreading faster than I expected. Alpha Voss knows what happened between you and her son, and instead of doing the smart thing and staying quiet about it, she's been making calls." Sable's jaw tightened. "There's a faction of the Twelve that wants you found and neutralized before this becomes a war nobody can win cleanly, and there's another faction, smaller but louder by the hour, that wants to reach you first and offer an alliance instead. Either way, people are actively looking, and this ruin isn't as forgotten as I led you to

Lyra had followed him without entirely deciding to.It had started as due diligence, or that was the story she'd told herself somewhere around the third day of trailing Sable's information network instead of reporting back to her father with anything useful. She told herself she needed to understand the threat before she could responsibly assess it. She told herself a great many things over those three days, most of them technically true and none of them the actual reason her feet had carried her to the mouth of a ruin nobody sane visited alone. She found him kneeling before a shattered dais in a hall that made her hunter training scream every warning it had learned about spaces soaked in old, unresolved violence."You shouldn't be here," she said, and her voice came out rougher than she intended, thick with something that wasn't quite fear and wasn't quite the caution she was supposed to feel standing this close to a confirmed royal heir in a place built for exactly his bloodline. No
