Chapter 1: The Nobody
Adrian's pov *************** I knew I didn’t belong here. Northvale University wasn’t meant for people like me. It was a school for the rich, and the powerful—the children of CEOs, politicians, and old-money bags who didn’t have to study hard to have their place in the outside world. Meanwhile, I was just Adrian Hayes, a scholarship student who was barely making enough savings but feeding off scraps, invisible to most and a joke to the rest of the students. To them, I was nobody. Someone unworthy of their attention. I had learned not to attract any form of attention to myself, to stay in my lane. Where I wouldn’t attract any attention from the rich kids. But sometimes, no matter how much you try to stay invisible, life has a way of throwing you into the spotlight. And tonight? Tonight was one of those nights. The big hall of Northvale’s ballroom was decorated with shining chandeliers, a place of riches and excess. It was Sophia Lancaster’s birthday—a lavish affair that looked more like a royal gala than a school party. Everyone who was anyone was here, dressed in the finest Italian suits and gowns, sipping champagne like it was water. I wasn’t supposed to be invited. But I was. And I had let myself believe—for just a moment—that maybe I was more than a nobody. Maybe, to Sophia, I was different. I could see her across the room, radiant in a sapphire-blue gown that hugged her curves perfectly. Her golden hair fell in soft waves down her shoulders, her emerald eyes twinkling with excitement. She was breathtaking. She always had been. I took a deep breath, holding the small velvet box in my pocket. It wasn’t much—just a simple silver necklace, something I had spent months saving up for. I had planned this for weeks. I had imagined this moment a thousand times. Try to find the right time, the right moment. Sophia and I had been friends since freshman year. She was one of the few people who had ever spoken down on me. We studied together in the library, and she laughed at my silly jokes. When no one else acknowledged my existence, she made me feel seen. And now, I wanted to tell her how I felt. I forced my way through the crowd of wealthy elites, my heart beating fast. But just as I was about to reach her, I froze. Because she wasn’t alone. Nathan Sterling had his arm wrapped around her waist, leaning in far too close, whispering something in her ear that made her laugh—a laugh that once belonged to me. A lump formed in my throat. No. This wasn’t right. She had told me she wasn’t interested in Nathan. She had told me she wasn’t like the other Northvale rich kids. Has she been lying to me? But as I stood there, unseen, watching her melt into his touch, I felt more like a fool being played. No, I was a fool. And I wasn’t invisible anymore. I was about to turn around when Nathan spotted me. A slow smirk crept onto his lips. "Well, well. Look what we have here." Sophia turned her gaze to me, her expression unreadable for a split second before something colder replaced it. I swallowed hard, forcing a smile. "Hey, Sophia. Can we talk?" Nathan chuckled, tightening his grip around her waist. "Talk? About what? How do you sneak into a party meant for people who actually belong here?" Laughter rippled through the nearby crowd of students who were now interested in whatever was going on at the moment. I ignored them, my focus solely on Sophia. "Can we talk alone?" Her lips parted slightly like she wanted to say a word. But before she could respond, Nathan stepped between us. "Whatever you have to say, you can say it here. We’re all friends, aren’t we?" More laughter. I clenched my fists. "Sophia," I tried again, softer this time. "Please." She sighed dramatically, rolling her eyes as if this was all some great inconvenience. "Adrian, what do you want?" The words stung, but I pushed forward. With trembling fingers, I pulled the velvet box from my pocket, flipping it open to reveal the silver necklace inside. "I got this for you," I said, my voice quieter now. "I know it’s not much, but I—" Sophia’s laugh cut me off. My face went pale as the silver necklace in my hand felt irrelevant. Was it a smile of thank you? Or was it a jest? "You got me this?" she said, her voice laced with amusement. "Adrian, this is… this is a joke, right?" My mouth went dry. "I thought you’d like it." Her expression twisted in something almost like pity. "Oh, Adrian. You’re sweet, really. But… did you honestly think this would impress me?" The air left my lungs. Nathan let out a laugh, snatching the box from my hands. "A silver necklace? Seriously?" He turned it over in his fingers like it was some worthless trinket. "Did you dig this out of a bargain bin?" More laughter I could see their weird looks and gazes falling on me. I felt humiliated. Sophia didn’t stop him. She didn’t defend me. Instead, she sighed, as if this whole exercise was tiring. "Adrian, you’re a nice guy. But we live in different worlds. You don’t belong here. You never have." I swallowed the lump in my throat. "You… don’t mean that," I whispered. Her green eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw the truth. The truth I had been too blind to see. "I do," she said. Nathan grinned, tossing the necklace onto the floor like garbage. "Tell you what, Hayes. Maybe when you make real money, you can try again." The room erupted into laughter. And all I could do was stand there, feeling every piece of myself break. I had never felt so small. So stupid. So pathetic. Without another word, I turned on and walked away. I pushed through the crowd, ignoring the laughter, ignoring the whispers. I didn’t stop until I was outside, the cold night air hugging my skin. I sucked in a shaky breath, my chest tight with humiliation. My fists clenched at my side. I had thought tonight would be the best night of my life. Instead, it was the worst. And the worst part? This was just the beginning.

Chapter 119“If you know what is good for you, then you are going to stay out of my way!” I said with anger. “Wow!” Jack said, laughing as he walked out of the darkness, and he stood. “Don't you think you are supposed to be afraid? You ought to beg me and pray that I don't kill you.” I laughed as I cracked some bones around my neck. “Don't you think it is supposed to be the other way round?” I said, walking back towards him. “You watch as Nathan's bullet robbed Park of his life. I am only sad that Nathan won't be here to see you die as I kill you slowly.” I said with venom in my voice. Jack didn’t flinch. His coat fluttered slightly as he rested on a part of a tree. “I figured you'd say something melodramatic like that,” he replied coolly, tilting his head as if he were trying to read me. “The problem is, Adrian, you still think this is about Park.”“What the hell did you do, Jack?” I hissed, circling slightly.Jack’s smile never dropped. “I opened the door. Chapter 118The moon had risen higher now, casting pale silver over the thick canopy of the forest. My breath clouded the air as I stood perfectly still, hidden in shadow. I need to make sure I was able to give Ren and Marcus a head start. I glanced back a few times, making sure they were long gone. The silence didn’t last.Crack.The first mercenary stepped through a patch of ferns, sweeping his rifle in a slow arc. He wore the same cybernetic mask, glowing red eyes scanning for movement. Behind him, two more figures fanned out, silent and deliberate—wolves hunting their prey. But they weren't ready for me.My hands curled into fists. The bones in my knuckles cracked audibly, my skin tightening as the heat flared beneath it. I’d suppressed it for so long. The thing inside me. The one Jack said made me a monster. But tonight… Tonight I was done hiding.I stepped forward. The mercs noticed me immediately, their weapons jerking up—but it was already too late.A pulse of raw kinetic ener

Chapter 117The air was thick with tension. I didn’t move. I just stared at him, the image of his smug, composed face made me want to give him a dirty slap. A part of me wanted to laugh at the absurdity of it all. A deal? After everything?I stepped closer, just slightly, enough to make his fingers twitch. He was trying to play calm, but I could see it—the subtle flicker of nerves behind his eyes.“You think I came all the way here just to talk?” I said, voice low and calculative. “After what you did to those kids? After what you did to Park? And you stand there with your legs crossed like some fucking priest asking me to repent?”Jack sighed, almost bored. “You’re too emotional, Adrian. That’s always been your flaw. It makes you reckless.”“No,” I said quietly, “it makes me dangerous.”Behind me, a floorboard creaked—the signal. Marcus was in position. Ren would be watching us through the back window, ready to move the second things went sideways.Jack leaned back in his chair, fol

Chapter 116The air was heavy and static as I stood at the edge of the woods, staring down at the flickering coordinates on my phone screen. Juno had marked it with a red dot, bold and pulsating—almost as if the location itself was alive, waiting for me.Nathan’s base. At least that was what I thought to myself. Finally,It felt surreal. We had been running after a goose chase for weeks, dead ends, and decoys meant to throw us off his trail. But this… this felt real. Too real. The kind of reality that didn’t let you walk away unchanged.Behind me, Ren and Marcus stood in tense silence. I knew they didn’t have to come—but they did anyway. Despite everything I’d said, everything I’d become, they still followed me into the hell hole. “ Does he know you are here?” I asked, looking at Ren. “ Who? Leo?” Ren replied and I nodded. “ He owes us too, Adrian. You are not the only one who wants to see his head on a spike.”I didn't say anything but felt the weight on my shoulder. I didn't have

Chapter 115Everything was happening so fast and it almost looked like the students were not buying their usuals anymore. The school environment was back to the way it was. No smoking around the corridor and they were not passing contraband either. “ Do you think Nathan is dumb?” I heard a voice behind me and I turned. “ Do you think he is going to use the school to run his business when the news is going viral about what happened?" Marcus said, looking at me. “ If you are trying to get to him then you need to think outside the box. Think of what you are going to do if you are him.” Ren added. I looked at both of them and said nothing. But the truth was, they were right. Juno just received a message of their movements and I cannot but wonder where their base was. It was quite easy with Milrada but tracking Nathan had been tough. Tougher than I expected of course. “ When are you going to come back?” Ren asked, staring at me. “ Come back?” I flashed a set of angry eyes at him. “ Le

Chapter 114“You shouldn't do that again.” Juno’s words caught me immediately when I got in. I looked back with an angry face. “Are you barking orders into my face?” I asked with my eyebrows arched. “I need to know where you are and keep you safe at all times. You are at risk when you go out on your own.” Juno said again. “At risk? Have you forgotten what I can do? Do I need to remind you that I alone took down Milrada and her business?” I said with anger. “Let me ask you again, Juno. Are you here to give me orders?” The room was thick with tension as we both stared at ourselves. “Why don't you both loosen up?” Juliet's voice broke the tension between us both. “Do I need to remind you that we have a bigger problem than to fight among ourselves?” She said, "Set the table." The aroma of the food she cooked caught my throat as I looked past Juno. “Why are you still here?” I asked, staring at Juliet, who was busy arranging the tables. “Is that a way of saying thank you?” she said back
