The archive door shuddered under another impact.

Dust sifted from the ceiling and settled across the old shelves. The red emergency light above the entrance flickered, throwing the medical room into brief flashes of crimson before sinking back into darkness.

Lucas tightened his grip around the black case containing the original trust.

“There’s one final page,” he said. “My mother has it.”

The old woman nodded slowly.

“And your grandfather will kill to get it.”

Another blow struck the door.

  • CHAPTER 96: The Choice

Lucas stared at the woman standing in the doorway. For one suspended moment, the archive seemed to lose all sound. The old stone chamber, with its towering shelves of ledgers and sealed records, appeared frozen beneath the dim lights while dust drifted from the ceiling.Elena stood with one hand against the stone wall, her breathing controlled despite the gunfire hammering against the sealed entrance behind her. A thin cut ran across her cheek, and blood stained the sleeve of her coat. Lucas couldn't tell whether the blood belonged to her or someone she had passed on her way inside. His mother was alive. And she had walked into the place where he had spent years believing she could never return.“Mom?”Elena's eyes found him, and something in her expression broke.“Lucas.”The word barely carried above the gunfire.Lucas rose from behind the long wooden table, but Richard caught his arm before he could cross the room.“Don't.”“They're shooting through the door.”Lucas pulled free.“I

Nobody moved.Edward Hale stood in the doorway, one hand braced against the stone frame. His hair had turned almost completely white, and his face was thinner than the photographs Lucas had studied in the archive. Time had carved deep lines around his eyes, but there was no mistaking him.Lucas had seen those eyes in the old family portraits. He had seen them in the records. He had seen the same face attached to reports that claimed Edward Hale had died decades ago.Edward's gaze settled on Samuel first.“My son.”Samuel's breath caught. He shifted his weight against L-01, one hand pressed firmly over the wound in his side. Blood had soaked through his shirt and darkened the fabric beneath his fingers.“Father.”The word came out rough, carrying twenty-eight years of anger and disbelief.Edward stepped into the archive, leaving the doorway behind him. His knees seemed unsteady, but he kept moving until he stood beside the old woman in the wheelchair. He rested his hand against the bac

The footsteps stopped.Lucas stood at the edge of the archive, the original trust secured inside his jacket, while the darkness beyond the newly opened doorway seemed to press against the room.Nobody moved. The man's final words still echoed in Lucas's mind. You finally know why your mother tried to kill her.Richard kept his weapon trained on the doorway. “Lucas, stay behind me.”Lucas didn't move. His attention remained on the elderly woman in the wheelchair.“My mother didn't try to kill her.”The old woman's fingers tightened around the armrests. That small reaction told Lucas enough.“You know what he's talking about.”She lowered her head.“Great-grandmother.”Samuel shifted against L-01's shoulder, his wounded side clearly troubling him.“Mother.”The old woman finally raised her head. Her voice was quiet when she answered.“I didn't want you to learn this way.”“Then tell me.”A faint mechanical hum vibrated beneath their feet. The archive lights flickered, washing the shelve

Samuel tried to push himself upright on the medical bed, but the motion pulled at the wound beneath his ribs. A sharp breath escaped him as fresh blood seeped through the bandage.Richard immediately turned.“Stay down.”“My wife is somewhere in this building.”Samuel swung his legs over the side of the bed.Richard caught his shoulder before he could stand. “You’ve lost too much blood.”“And Elena may be walking into a

  • CHAPTER 92: The Woman Who Knew the First Secret

Lucas couldn't move. The elderly woman sat in the wheelchair, her thin hands resting on the armrests as she studied him. She looked fragile beneath the dim light, yet there was something steady in her expression, something that made the room feel smaller.Samuel broke the silence.“Mother.”His voice cracked. The woman turned toward him. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then she extended one trembling hand.Samuel reached for it.The moment their fingers touched, the years seemed to fall away from his face. The man who had survived twenty-eight years of imprisonment suddenly looked like a son standing before the mother he had believed was dead.“I thought you were gone,” he whispered.“So did everyone else.”Her fingers tightened around his.“Edward said you died,” Samuel continued.“Edward lied.”Richard stepped closer, his attention fixed on the woman. “Who are you?”She turned toward him.“Richard Hale.”Richard stopped.“You know me?”“I know what you did for them.”Her

The gunshot still rang through the control room.Lucas stared at Samuel on the floor. Blood was spreading beneath him, darkening his shirt as L-01 stood over him with blood on his hand.Marcus Vane remained near the doorway, his gun still pointed toward them. For one terrible second, nobody moved. Then Lucas dropped beside his father.“Dad.”Samuel's eyes were open, but his breathing had become shallow. Lucas pressed his hand against the wound.“Richard!”Richard rushed over and knelt beside Samuel. “Move your hand.”Lucas obeyed.Richard examined the wound, then pressed a piece of torn fabric firmly against it. “He's alive, but the bullet went deep. We need to stop the bleeding.”Lucas looked at Marcus. “You shot him.”Marcus lowered the gun. “I wasn't aiming for him.”“Then who were you aiming at?”Marcus looked past Lucas. At L-01.L-01's expression remained cold. “Me.”Marcus nodded. “Yes.”Lucas stepped toward him. “Why?”Marcus glanced at the locked doors. “Because your grandfat
