Chapter two.

“Coming.” he quickly wiped the tears off. As he opened the door, it didn’t do much for him to find that it was his landlady, an ugly woman who was suspiciously large.

“Good day, Mrs. Primrose.” He said politely

“Good day right back at you, Jake” she fired at him and he shrank backwards.

“Have you got the money to pay up for the space you are occupying right now?

“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Primrose, I just need a few more days, I’ll be getting my paycheck then and I promise not to waste one penny before I bring it to you.”

But she was having none of that, “You have till the end of today to get me my money.”

“I apologise, ma’am but I don’t think that would be possible for me to do.”

She flared up because he had called her ma’am which made her seem old. “You have only today. Or,” she said slyly, flapping the hand fan she was holding. “You can either move out by the end of the day or become my sugar baby and I could even give you some three thousand dollars each month.” she raised her brow suggestively and smiled in a way that made Jake blanch.

“Mrs. Primrose, I’ll not be able to get you your money by the end of the day.” he couldn't imagine himself having an affair with somebody like her, it made him want to barf.

“You better be out by the end of the day if you don’t get my money,” she screamed in his face, going red from the rejection.

“What is all this about?’ A drowsy voice asked.

They both looked over in the direction the voice came, and Jake was so surprised by how beautiful and exotic she looked.

“My apologies, Irene.” Mrs. Primrose was transformed into this polite woman, Irene must be influential, even her name sounded influential. Mrs. Primrose explained the situation to Irene much to Jake's distaste.

“I will wire you the money and some more, Mrs. Primrose, I don’t want any more disturbance, I’m trying to take a nap.’’ And with that, she was gone without as much as a word to Jake.

Jake went and knocked on Irene’s door, and she opened it looking more dishevelled as though she had fallen asleep instantly.

“What do you want?”

“Uh, I just wanted to say thank you, I’ll repay the money to you by the end of the day.”

Even though he had no idea where he’d find the money.

She looked at him for a few seconds, which made him uncomfortable, and just like that without a word she shut her door and was gone.

Jake felt foolish after Irene closed her door in his face without even saying anything to him.

He was still deliberating the occurrence when his phone rang and startled him out of his thoughts.

The number was unrecognizable but he still answered the call.

“Is this Jake Miller?”

“Yes, it is I. Who are you and how do you know me?”

“Did you receive the alert for the five million dollars that was sent to you?” The person at the other end of the line did not bother answering Jake's questions.

“Yes, I did receive it. But who are you?’’

“If you want to know who I am, meet me at exactly four o'clock at the LOTEX Group Buildings. Make sure you make it to my office on the 99th floor.”

Before Jake could think of a response, the call had disconnected.

He checked the time and it was just a few minutes past three. He had enough time to have a bath and make it to the Group Buildings.

Forty minutes later, Jake was in front of the majestic building, which was towering.

He walked inside looking oddly out of place. He found the receptionist’s desk and asked how he could get to the 99th floor.

“Good afternoon, miss. Please I need you to point out in what way I should go to make it to the 99th floor.” On hearing the 99th floor, she looked up sharply.

“What is your name sir? Do you have an appointment scheduled for today?”

“I am Jake Miller, and no I do not have an appointment scheduled before now, all I got was a phone call asking to make it to the 99th floor at exactly four O'clock.”

“Accept my apologies, Mr. Miller but I cannot let you in, without proper orders, so I’d like you to leave now and not try to cause a scene.”

“A scene? I just have to meet the person who placed that call, I have no intention of causing a scene.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t let you in. The 99th floor is top priority, so I’d ask that you leave right now or I’ll call security to walk you out.”

“Why would you do that? I have done nothing in the wrong. All I’m asking for is that you help me and let me meet the person who made the call.”

She pressed a button that was barely visible on the desk and spoke into a piece that he didn’t even notice was attached to her collar.

‘’Security, this is the receptionist’s desk, and I’d like you to send some of your guys here now, we need to see a Mr. Miller out”

Jake wouldn’t wait around for that to happen, he ran towards the next set of doors and pushed them open, he found an elevator as it was just about to close.

Running towards it, he bumped into a lady and caused her to spill her drink on her collar and her breast.

“Oh my God! I am so sorry, I did not intend to do that, I am sorry.”

“Why wouldn’t you watch where you are headed, Do you know how much this dress costs?”

Jake felt a growing irritation.

“You could take it off for me to wash after but for now, I have an important schedule to meet up.”

He tried to clean the stain, but things went wrong when his hand touched her breast.

The woman screamed, "What are you doing?" and attracted the guards.

Quickly, Jake pushed her out of the elevator and hit the button to go up.

"How did you all let a homeless man in here? This is a big company, and you let a dirty beggar with no appointment, get in? Even having the guts to take the elevator!" She yelled at the guards.

"We apologize. We will surely get him," one of the guards said.

The angry manager ordered, "What are you just standing there for? Go after him, he needs to be taught a lesson!"

Two of the three security personnel chase after Jake but return shortly.

The captain of the guards hesitated, "But Ma'am he's headed to the top floor, where the CEO is. We are not allowed to access that floor without permission."

"How come you dumb asses are not allowed there, yet some random person who does not belong there has just found his way there. Just wait here until he returns, I will make sure to deal with him."

The silence in the lobby became absolute. Every whisper died. William slowly rose from his chair. The legs scraped against the marble floor with a sharp, ugly sound. His face, which had been glowing with cruel satisfaction, went slack with disbelief. He stared at Mr. Black as if he’d spoken in another language.“What did you say?” William asked. His voice was low, dangerous.Mr. Black didn’t blink. He walked forward, until he stood beside Jack. He didn’t look at Jack. His eyes were locked on William.“I said,” Mr. Black repeated, his tone even and clear, “Jack Miller will not apologize. You will invest under the original terms, or you will leave. There is no third option.”Victor Crane’s mouth opened and closed like a fish. He looked from Mr. Black to William, panic flooding his features. “Mr. Black, please! You don’t understand! We need this investment! The board—”“The board,” Mr. Black cut in, his head turning just slightly toward Victor, “does not make this decision. I do. On b

Jack shoved his hands into his pockets and held William's gaze without blinking. That only made William hotter with anger, he could not believe a kid like this would dare insult him. He gritted his teeth.William answered a call and flipped the phone to speaker. “There’s an idiot at the downfall,” the voice said. “If that person doesn’t leave the company, I won’t invest.” Jack didn't flinch; he only scoffed. “I’m coming,” the caller finished, and the line went dead.“You don't know what you’ve done,” William snapped. “I’ll make you pay. You’ll regret this day.” Jack smiled then, calm, almost amused. He loved that William was the one losing his temper, not him. He took a slow step closer, his calm presence only feeding William’s fury. “Regret it? That’s funny,” Jack said softly, almost mockingly. “Because right now, you’re the one losing control.”William’s hands trembled slightly as he balled them into fists. “Control? You have no idea who you’re dealing with!” he shouted, his

Mr. Black drew in a deep breath, eyes flicking to the stack of files on the desk as if searching for courage. “Then I’ll have to appoint Ms. Evelyn Harper,” he said finally.Jack’s head snapped up, eyes narrowing. “Why her?”“She’s supposed to be your mentor,” Mr. Black replied, his tone low but firm. “And right now, she’s the only one who can be by your side without them noticing.”Jack’s jaw tightened.
