Nathan knew Taylor was stepping in to help him, but the warmth of her hand in his sent an unfamiliar sensation through his chest. It wasn’t discomfort—no, it was something else. A slow, persistent thrum beneath his ribs. The closeness, the way she confidently claimed him, made something shift inside him.

Natalia, on the other hand, was seething. Nathan has a new lover? Already? It made no sense. They had barely been divorced for long, yet here he was, standing beside a woman so effortlessly elegant and powerful. A sharp pang of jealousy twisted in her gut, though she masked it behind a scoff.

James wasn’t faring any better. His pride had already taken a hit from seeing Nathan here, but learning about Taylor? His jaw clenched as he overheard the murmurs around them.

"That’s Taylor Monroe, right?”

“Yes! She’s the Head Manager of Narvo Bank. I heard she’s got immense authority over the bank’s investment business in the city."

"Unbelievable. Not only is she gorgeous, but she’s a powerhouse in the financial sector. That guy must be really lucky to have her by his side."

James’s grip on his cuff tightened. Head Manager? He only held a platinum card in Narvo Bank, and even at that level, someone of Taylor’s rank was practically unreachable. Yet, Nathan stood beside her like an equal.

He narrowed his eyes. So that’s why Nathan wasn’t arrested. It all made sense now. Taylor must have used her influence to clear whatever fraudulent mess Nathan had been accused of. And now, thanks to her connections, he was attending an event he otherwise wouldn’t have been qualified for.

Natalia’s lips pressed into a thin line as she digested the revelation. She had just left Nathan, and yet, it seemed he had landed on his feet—no, soared into something even better. A deep discomfort settled in her chest.

Taylor, sensing their thoughts, turned back with a slow, disapproving smirk. “I expected better from people who claim to have class,” she said coolly, then tugged Nathan’s hand gently. “Let’s not waste any more time here.”

And just like that, they walked past, leaving Natalia and James gaping.

Inside the hall, a different kind of attention was drawn. The moment James entered, the other guests swarmed, eager to curry favor with the Baron family’s heir.

“Mr. Baron! What an honor to see you here.”

“You’re looking as dashing as ever, sir.”

“Your family’s investments in the city are remarkable. We’d love an opportunity to collaborate.”

James straightened, his irritation from earlier fading as his pride swelled. He welcomed the flattery, his earlier frustrations slipping into the background.

Then, someone laughed lightly. “And of course, James and Natalia—you both make such a stunning couple! Truly a match made in high society.”

Natalia smiled, though something about the compliment didn’t sit well with her anymore. James, however, grinned wider.

“Well, we are quite the power pair,” he said, his chest puffing with satisfaction and pride.

As the evening progressed, the conversation among the guests shifted toward the highly anticipated auction. A well-dressed man holding a glass of wine leaned toward James with a knowing smile.

“I heard that during the auction, an extremely rare item will be up for bidding—a vintage ring,” he said, swirling his drink.

James arched a brow, intrigued. “A vintage ring?”

Another guest nodded eagerly. “Not just any ring. It’s part of the private collection of Sir Gregory Bakers, the president of Titan Business Alliance. He’s hosting this event, after all.”

Murmurs of admiration spread through the hall. “Sir Bakers has an incredible collection of rare antiques. The ring is one of his most prized possessions.”

A woman in a shimmering red gown sighed wistfully. “The price is bound to be exorbitant. Only someone of James Baron’s status and wealth could afford to bid on it.”

James smirked, puffing out his chest. “Well, if that’s the case, the ring is as good as mine.”

Standing nearby with Nathan, Taylor scoffed. “How bold of you to claim something that isn’t even in your hands yet,” she said, tilting her head.

James turned, trying to mask his irritation. “Oh? And why do you think so little of me, Miss Monroe?” He let out a short chuckle before casting a smirk toward Nathan. “I mean, no offense, but I think we both know I’m better than your boyfriend.”

Nathan remained impassive, while Taylor simply laughed—a rich, amused sound that caught the attention of those around.

“If Nathan wanted to,” she said, her voice carrying effortlessly, “he could buy out the entire auction.”

A hush fell over the crowd. Then, a few guests burst into laughter, their eyes flickering toward Nathan with ridicule.

“Buy out the auction?” someone muttered.

“Does she even know who she’s defending?” another scoffed.

A well-groomed man adjusted his cufflinks and shook his head. “Taylor, my dear, it’s admirable that you’re standing up for your… companion, but let’s be honest—everyone knows Nathan was just dumped by Natalia. It’s all over the city. He lost his place in high society which he never merited.”

“I wonder what trick he used to make her defend him like this,” another whispered.

Despite the hushed tones, the underlying scorn was evident. They were careful with their words, not wanting to offend Taylor directly, but their contempt for Nathan was clear.

Taylor’s expression remained unreadable, but Nathan could see the flicker of irritation in her eyes.

Meanwhile, Nathan barely paid any attention to the mockery. False pleasantries and shallow flattery didn’t interest him. He had no desire to prove anything to anyone.

He took a slow sip from his glass before finally speaking in a calm, steady voice.

“I’m not interested in buying the whole auction,” he said, his gaze locked onto James.

“But that ring—” He set down his glass, his tone turning firm.

“That is mine.”

The weight of his words settled over the crowd like a thunderclap, leaving a stunned silence in its wake.

Natalia’s tires crunched softly against the paved driveway as she pulled into her house after a long day’s work. The streetlamps outside threw pale streaks across her windshield, the faint hum of the car’s engine the only sound in the quiet evening. She exhaled, shutting off the ignition and leaning back against the seat for a moment, her shoulders slumping in quiet exhaustion. Her fingers brushed over her handbag on the passenger seat. She reached for it but paused, her thoughts drifting unbidden to Nathan.A deep breath escaped her lips. Should I… go see him? she wondered, her eyes momentarily softening. She sat still, staring at the steering wheel, torn between logic and emotion. “Shouldn’t I have stopped by his house to get the food containers I used to bring dinner for him last night?” she muttered, half to herself, half to the night air. Her hand lifted to check her wristwatch. “It’s just past seven… not that late.”She frowned, hesitating as her fingers brushed the car key agai

Braxton gave a slow nod, the kind that said he’d heard and internalized every instruction. “Understood,” he murmured, voice low and sure. He straightened, palms flat on his knees for a heartbeat, then rose, the movement soft and rehearsed. “Other than having the mechanisms for Nathan’s death prepared,” he added, leaning in a fraction, “I’m already digging his grave.”Heath’s smile sharpened into something almost approving, then the expression cooled. He folded his hands on the desk and watched Braxton with an appraising gaze. “Impressive,” he said, and the single word carried approval like a benediction. But the smile didn’t last. A tightening around his mouth told Braxton the rest of the thought hadn’t gone away.“What’s wrong?” Braxton asked, sensing the change and stepping closer, curiosity and hunger braided in his tone.Heath ground his teeth just briefly and the sound was small but hard. “Two days ago,” he said, measured, “that insolent fool—Nathan—earned another promotion at D

Leo hesitated the tiniest of seconds, as if weighing whether to argue for the hotel he’d suggested, then gave a stiff nod. He slung the luggage over his shoulder and moved toward the hallway, every step measured, every breath controlled.Alaric followed, cloak-like and undeniable, his presence a shadow swallowing the light. He moved with the immaculate calm of a ruler confident he had set every piece in place. Amelia watched them go down the hallway, the sword sheathed again, the echo of Alaric’s cane, a metronome marking the way she had been ordered to live. She let out a sound that was half sigh, half sob, but she kept it low. The room felt suddenly cavernous and cold. She had the photograph folded in her palm like contraband; its edges bit into her skin. When the footsteps faded, when the door clicked softly behind them, she turned away, her breathing heavy in despair and petrification. After showing Alaric his room, Leo made his way back downstairs, his footsteps quiet against the

Amelia’s heart thudded so loud she was sure the sound filled the room. The silence that followed Leo’s bowed apology stretched thin and dangerous; it felt as if the walls themselves were waiting for the next strike. She turned her head a fraction, unable to force the words from her throat, and found that she could not meet her father’s eyes. She couldn’t order Leo to obey her now, not with that sword between them and Alaric’s temper like coiled steel. So she pleaded with him in the only way left, through the tilt of her chin and the desperation in her eyes.Leo’s defiant stance softened the instant their gazes connected. The stoic set of his jaw eased; the hardness that always lived behind his calm softened into something almost like concern. Amelia mouthed the single syllable she had rehearsed a hundred times in the nights alone: “Please.”Leo looked at Alaric. The pause felt like an interrogation. Then, with formal dignity that had nothing to do with the sword at his throat and eve

Amelia stood in her living room that morning, the weight of silence pressing against her chest. The air felt thick, too still, too heavy, as though the walls themselves were holding their breath. Her father, Alaric, sat regally on the couch before her. His posture was sharp, his expression darker than a storm, and in his hand rested a black walking cane whose tip tapped the marble floor with rhythmic impatience. The faint echo of each tap seemed to pierce through her chest, steady and menacing.Leo stood a few meters away, his hands folded neatly before him, every inch the disciplined bodyguard. His eyes stayed fixed on the far wall, but he could feel the tension seeping through the air, he could feel her fear. Even from that distance, Amelia’s nerves were practically vibrating off her body. Her fingers fidgeted with the hem of her sleeve, her throat tight.Still, she forced herself to meet his stare. “Father,” she began softly, her voice barely steady, “I hope it wasn’t a stressful j

The question landed like a stone in her chest. Taylor’s eyes lifted to meet his, searching for a trace of softness, but all she found was truth reflected back at her.And in that moment, the dining room seemed to fall still again, the ticking of the wall clock echoing louder than before. The scent of toast and coffee lingered in the air, but the warmth of the morning had dimmed. She didn’t respond. She couldn’t. Then she lowered her gaze. The question lingered, piercing through her silence, leaving her face unreadable, yet her heart unmistakably unsettled. Johnson watched her with those old, canny eyes, eyes that seemed to hold a hundred small judgments and as many worries. Her silence had been telling. He watched the way she paused, saw the way her mouth tried to form an answer and then closed. When she finally met his gaze, he smiled as if to soften the observation that had been lodged between them.“I guess nothing genuine is going on between you guys then. Clara and Anna were rig
