The forest floor was a jagged mosaic of shattered oak branches and obsidian shrapnel. Reza landed in a crouch, his shortsword vibrating with the force of his impact, his eyes locked on the gray-cloaked figures emerging from the mist. The lead hunter, a man with a jagged scar running down his cheek, leveled his heavy crossbow. Its barrel glowed with a sickening, void-black hum.

"Get behind the wreckage, Nara!" Reza shouted, his voice cracking with the lingering, forced-honesty curse. "I have absolutely no tactical plan other than being a meat shield and hoping for the best!"

Nara didn't argue. She grabbed Elara by the silk-clad arm, dragging the princess toward the mangled remains of the carriage. Elara, usually a vision of regal composure, looked at the charging hunters and then at Reza with wide, unblinking eyes.

"You are going to fight them with... what exactly?" Elara hissed, ducking behind a heavy wooden wheel. "You don't even have a mana capacitor on your person!"

Reza slammed his fist into the air, calling up the crimson interface. The screen flickered, glowing with a mocking, blood-red intensity.

"I’m choosing the cheapest option because my credit is currently trash, and I’m about to die of embarrassment!" Reza bellowed, his voice carrying clearly through the clearing.

A sudden, rhythmic pop-pop-pop echoed from the interface. A heavy crate materialized out of thin air, crashing onto the forest floor with a dull thud. Reza pried the lid open, expecting swords or grenades. Instead, he stared at a dozen neon-yellow, rubber chickens.

"You’ve got to be kidding me," he whispered, picking one up. It emitted a pathetic, high-pitched squeak.

"Is that... a toy?" Elara stared at the bird, her jaw dropping. "Reza, those are poultry-shaped noisemakers."

"They aren't just toys, they’re fire hazards!" the Usury System chirped in his head.

A crossbow bolt whistled through the air, burying itself inches from Reza’s boot. He didn't think; he panicked. He hurled a rubber chicken at the lead hunter with all the desperate strength he could muster.

The bird tumbled end-over-end through the air, squeaking rhythmically. As it collided with the hunter’s chest, it didn't bounce off. It detonated. A small, concentrated burst of blue-white fire engulfed the mercenary, sending him flying backward into a pine tree with a comical, high-pitched squawk.

"What in the nine hells was that?" one of the other hunters shouted, stumbling back as another rubber-chicken-shaped fireball vaporized his crossbow.

Reza was already on the move, diving behind a boulder. He tossed three more chickens in rapid succession. The forest became a cacophony of ridiculous squeaks followed by blinding, concussive blasts. The mercenaries scrambled, their formation shattered by the absurdity of the barrage.

"Keep squeaking them, you imbecile!" Elara laughed, a sound of pure, shocked disbelief. "I have never seen such a disgraceful display of combat, but it is remarkably effective!"

"I hate this!" Reza screamed, lobbing a particularly large chicken that vaporized a tree trunk. "I feel like a clown, and if I survive this, I’m never eating poultry again!"

Suddenly, the ground groaned. The mercenaries who weren't fleeing suddenly stopped, stepping aside as a massive, hulking shadow detached itself from the gloom. It was a golem, carved from jagged, obsidian-flecked granite, its eyes burning with a cruel, flickering violet light. It stood ten feet tall, its movements heavy and ponderous.

A disembodied voice—thin, reedy, and irritatingly cheerful—echoed through the clearing. It was Kairon Vessel, speaking through a conduit in the golem’s chest.

"Oh, look at you, Reza! Using my bargain-bin stock to kill my contractors? That’s going to cost you a fortune in inventory fees!" Kairon’s voice dripped with delight. "I’m honestly rooting for the golem. It’s got such a nice, heavy fist. Do smash him, big guy!"

The golem stepped forward, its heavy stone feet crushing the rubber chickens into useless, smoking sludge. It wasn't affected by the blasts; it simply shielded its face and kept walking.

"Reza!" Nara screamed from behind the wreckage. "It’s not stopping! The chickens aren't doing anything!"

Reza frantically swiped at his UI.

[NOTIFICATION: CREDIT RATING DROPPED TO 'SUBPRIME'. INTEREST RATES ADJUSTED TO 4,000%. UNLOCKING: DARK ACCOUNT INTERFACE.]

The red UI shifted. The borders turned a deep, bruised purple. A new prompt appeared: [DEBT TRANSFER: NON-NEGOTIABLE.]

"My credit is so bad that I’ve unlocked the ability to dump my problems on other people," Reza muttered, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked at the massive stone fist descending toward him.

He didn't run. Instead, he pulled a shimmering, black sticky note from the air. It hummed with a heavy, gravitational weight.

"Hey, rock-head!" Reza shouted, leaping to the side as the stone fist pulverized the ground. He landed on the golem’s calf and slapped the sticky note directly onto the seam of its shoulder joint.

The effect was instantaneous. The golem froze. Its violet eyes pulsed wildly, then turned a dull, tired gray. The construct began to sag, its stone joints groaning under an invisible, crushing weight.

"What have you done?" Kairon’s voice suddenly faltered, losing its cheer. "That’s... that’s my core operational tax! You can’t just shift your debt onto my hardware! That’s illegal!"

"I don't care about your rules!" Reza shouted, scrambling off the construct as it began to tremble. "I’m declaring financial insolvency on your creation!"

The golem gave one last, pathetic groan of metal and stone fatigue. The massive structure slumped, its limbs turning to fine, gray sand as the Usury System’s interest rates—now channeled entirely into the golem’s structural integrity—drained its life-force in seconds. It collapsed into a mountain of dust, leaving the forest strangely silent.

Elara stood up from the wreckage, her eyes fixed on the pile of rubble. She looked at Reza, her expression a mix of awe and deep, underlying fear.

"You didn't just break the golem," she murmured, stepping over the debris. "You hacked the fundamental law of the borderlands. You just transferred a spiritual burden into a physical one."

Reza stood panting, his hand still tingling where he had touched the sticky note. The red UI flickered, then dimmed, revealing a path that hadn't been there before. Where the golem had collapsed, the ground had sunk, revealing a staircase of ancient, glowing stone leading deep into the earth.

"The Tomb," Elara breathed, her data-stream eyes widening. "You’ve opened the entrance."

Reza looked at the dark, yawning throat of the vault. He felt the cold weight of the Usury System settling back into his chest, a constant, nagging reminder that his freedom was still miles away.

"I am officially done with this day," Reza groaned, walking toward the stairs. "And if there is one more squeaky toy in that vault, I am going to lose my mind."

Nara grabbed his hand, her grip firm and warm. "Whatever is down there, Reza, at least we’re still together."

"Yeah," Reza muttered, glancing back at the forest. "But I really hope there's some food, because I think I'm going to pass out if I don't eat something that isn't a magical construct."

As they descended, the stairs illuminated with a pale, rhythmic ligh

t, welcoming them into the dark heart of the history they were meant to erase.

The echo of the sliding blast door’s final seal still vibrated in Reza’s teeth. It was a suffocating, heavy dark that pressed against his chest like wet wool. For a few seconds, there was only the sound of three pairs of lungs desperate for clean, cool air, and the sharp, irregular crackle-fizz of the red static eating away at Nara’s skin."Is everyone... still in one piece?" Reza’s voice rasped in the dark, his throat dry and tight."I think my ribs are bruised, and my dress is entirely ruined," Elara’s voice came from somewhere to his left, followed by a dry, hacking cough. "But yes. Still breathing.""Nara?" Reza shifted, his arms tightening around her shivering frame."Still here," she whispered, her voice dangerously thin and trembling. "But it feels like... like someone’s draining my battery with a rusty needle."Reza tried to call up the system UI to illuminate the area, but his interface was sluggish, crippled by the interference of the deep vault. The massive stone doors of the ancient vault had barely ground open, casting a narrow sliver of pale light into the dark, when the shadows behind them erupted. The heavy, metallic clank of Raven’s boots suddenly stopped. For a fraction of a second, the only sound in the damp stone chamber was the rapid, shallow breathing of Nara as she lay shivering in Reza's arms, the red static of her debt-load crackling across her pale skin. Then, the darkness split.A blinding arc of cold, blue runic energy cleaved through the air. The physical pressure of the strike was immense, a localized shockwave that blew the dust off the stone floor in a violent, expanding ring."Get in!" Reza roared, throwing himself forward. He shoved Elara and Nara through the opening of the massive stone doors just as Raven’s greatsword slammed into the threshold.Sparks exploded in a brilliant, chaotic shower of white and blue. The air inside the stone shaft was cold, smelling of ancient dust and damp earth. The frantic, explosive chaos of the forest above faded into a muffled, distant echo, the screams of the mercenaries and the screech of rubber-chicken fireballs finally cutting off as they descended deeper into the earth. Reza let out a long, shuddering breath, his shoulders dropping an inch. The ringing in his ears was slowly being replaced by the steady, rhythmic hum of the glowing stone steps beneath their boots. He looked down at his hands. They were still slightly sticky from the lavender-scented soap foam, but the manic energy of the battle was finally draining from his veins, leaving behind a dull, heavy ache."Well," Elara muttered, brushing dirt and dried leaves from her tattered silk sleeve with an air of practiced dignity. "That was... historically embarrassing. If anyone from the capital saw me cheering for explosive yellow poultry, I would have to abdicate the throne out of pure shame.""You'

Reza stared at it, his throat still tight with the lingering, forced-honesty curse of the Usury System."I am currently looking at a manifestation of my own ruin and I really, really wish I hadn't taken that deal," Reza blurted out, his eyes darting toward the phantom. The ghost didn't blink. It simply pointed a translucent finger toward the tree line. Before the digit could even settle, the air was torn apart by the rhythmic, thundering gallop of horses armored in matte-black steel. The forest, once silent and ominous, was suddenly flooded with the harsh, predatory glow of high-tier Royal Guard lanterns."Don't move, scavs!" a voice boomed, cutting through the damp chill. The ghost vanished into thin air, leaving behind a cold, lingering sense of dread. He stood at the precipice of the crater, the iron-shod boots of his uniform grinding against the debris with the casual lethality of a predator checking a trap. The blue runes on his greatsword pulsed in time with his slow, deliberate heartbeat, casting long, flickering shadows that seemed to dance across Reza’s trembling frame.Reza’s hand was slick with sweat as he gripped his rusted shortsword. Beside him, Nara was still shaking off the vertigo of the blast."Target confirmed," Raven muttered, his voice cold, devoid of any warmth. His gaze flicked from Reza’s face—notably missing a left eyebrow—to the glowing, phantom remains of the red UI that still hovered in the air. "Illegal System usage detected. High-tier energy signature. You're a long way from home, scav, and you’re carrying a contagion."Reza scrambled to his fee
