CHAPTER 006: The Masked Investor
last update2025-12-26 20:58:31

The grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel was filled with the smell of expensive lilies and desperation. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting a sharp light on the faces of New York’s elite. Usually, this crowd was loud and arrogant. Tonight, they spoke in whispers.

The Hastings family was at the center of the room, but they didn't look like kings anymore. Henry McHampton stood near the bar, his face pale, his hand shaking as he gripped a glass of gin. Bernadette was beside him, her smile fixed and brittle, like glass about to shatter.

"He has to show up, Henry," Bernadette whispered, her eyes darting to the entrance. "The Mystery Chairman from Rad & Co. is our only hope. If he doesn't buy our debt tonight, we’re finished. The banks will take the house by Monday."

"I know that!" Henry snapped, his voice tight. "Just make sure you look the part. If he likes what he sees, maybe he won't look too closely at our balance sheets."

The massive double doors swung open. The room went silent.

Thiago Henderson walked in. He didn't look like the man they had kicked into the dirt. He wore a midnight-blue suit that cost more than a mid-sized house. On his face was a custom silver mask, shaped like a hunting hawk, covering everything from his forehead to his cheekbones. His silver eyes burned through the eye slits, cold and predatory.

He didn't walk; he commanded the space. Stephen walked two steps behind him, looking like a grim shadow.

"Is that him?" someone whispered.

"The Ghost Chairman," another replied. "They say he bought three tech firms before breakfast just to shut them down."

Thiago watched the crowd. Look at them, he thought. They’re like vultures waiting for a carcass, not realizing they’re the ones being hunted.

He saw Bernadette peel away from Henry. She smoothed her red silk dress and adjusted her hair. She walked toward him with the practiced grace of a woman who knew exactly how much her beauty was worth.

"Welcome, sir," Bernadette said, her voice dropping into a sultry, melodic tone. She stood just close enough for him to smell her perfume. "I’m Bernadette Hastings. My family is hosting this evening. We’ve heard so much about your... aggressive style."

Thiago looked at her. Up close, he could see the tiny lines of stress around her eyes. He felt a dark sense of satisfaction. Five years ago, I would have died for this woman. Now, I just want to see how far she’ll sink.

"Your family is in a lot of trouble, Miss Hastings," Thiago said. He had lowered his voice, making it a deep, gravelly hum that she wouldn't recognize. "I don't usually invest in sinking ships."

Bernadette reached out, her fingers grazing the sleeve of his jacket. "A ship only sinks if it doesn't have the right captain. With your capital and my... connections, we could rule this city. I’m willing to do anything to ensure a partnership. Anything at all."

Thiago tilted his head. "Anything? You’re a married woman, aren't you? I saw a man over by the bar who looks quite possessive."

Bernadette let out a sharp, mocking laugh. She didn't even look back at Henry. "Henry? He’s a business partner. A temporary one. If you're worried about my past, don't be. My first husband was the real mistake. A loser. A convict who tried to drag me down to the gutter with him. I only married that trash for his father's old connections. He’s nothing compared to a man like you."

Thiago felt a cold fire ignite in his chest. Trash. A loser. The words she used to describe the man who had loved her, the man who had gone to prison to protect her father’s name.

"You sound like a woman who knows how to trade up," Thiago said, his voice flat.

"I’m a realist," she replied, leaning in until her lips were inches from his ear. "Invest in us, and I’ll make sure you’re rewarded in ways a bank can’t offer. Name your price."

Thiago looked past her. In the corner of the room, standing by the service entrance, he saw a girl in a maid’s uniform. It was Tamia. She looked tired, her eyes downcast, holding a tray of empty glasses. She looked like a ghost in her own life.

"I have a price," Thiago said.

Bernadette’s eyes lit up. "Tell me. Money? Shares? A seat on the board?"

Thiago leaned in, his silver mask brushing against her hair. His voice was a cold whisper that made her shiver, though she didn't know why.

"I’ll save your company," Thiago said. "I’ll pay every debt and double your stock price by morning. But I don't want your shares. And I don't want you."

Bernadette blinked, confused. "Then what?"

"I want your maid," Thiago said, pointing a gloved finger toward the girl by the door. "The girl, Tamia. Hand her over to my staff tonight. Transfer her employment contract to me, and you’ll find the funds in your account before the sun rises. If she isn't in my car in ten minutes, I walk, and your family ends tonight."

Bernadette looked at Tamia, then back at the masked man. She didn't hesitate. She didn't even wonder why a trillionaire wanted a broken maid.

"Her?" Bernadette laughed, relieved. "She’s just a servant. A slow-witted girl we kept out of charity. If that’s all it takes to close the deal, you can have her. I’ll go tell her to pack her rags right now."

Bernadette turned and hurried toward Tamia, a look of triumph on her face.

Thiago watched her go. You just sold my sister for a check, Bernadette, he thought, his jaw tightening behind the mask. You think you won. But you just gave me the only thing in this house worth saving. Now, the real destruction begins.

He turned to Stephen, who was waiting in the shadows. "Is the car ready?"

"Yes, Chairman. And the medical team is on standby at the estate."

"Good," Thiago said, walking toward the exit. "Tell them to be gentle. She thinks she’s going to a monster. She has no idea she’s finally going home."

The mansion was quiet, but it was the kind of quiet that made your skin crawl. Thiago sat in the dark of his guest room. He wasn't sleeping. He had a small black case open on the bed. Inside were tiny silver discs, no bigger than a shirt button. These were high-tech bugs, the kind used by spies. "You're sure about this?" Melanie’s voice came through his earpiece. She was parked a mile away, monitoring the signal. "Henry and Bernadette think they can play games with poison," Thiago whispered. "It's time I listen to their secrets." Thiago moved like a shadow. He knew the layout of the house better than anyone. He climbed into the maintenance crawlspace above the ceiling. The air was dusty and hot. He crawled through the narrow vents, his heart thumping against his ribs. He reached the vent directly above Henry’s private study. He moved with care, placing a silver disc against the metal grill. Then, he pressed a button on his watch. A soft blue light flickered once. The connection wa

Thiago walked through the front doors of the mansion, his mind still racing from the news of the whole thing, he was not fast enough to know who was the boy and what connection he has with the boy. “Fuck” he screamed as he stepped into the grand foyer, his feet went still. The sound of a brush scratching against stone filled the silent hall. There, in the center of the white marble floor, was a girl. She was on her knees, her small frame hunched over a bucket of grey, soapy water. She was wearing a thin, grey maid’s uniform that was two sizes too big for her. Her hands, once soft and full of life, were red and cracked from the harsh chemicals. It was Tamia. His little sister.Thiago felt a sharp pain in his chest, like a hot blade was twisting in his heart. The last time he saw her, she was wearing a bright yellow dress."Tamia?" he whispered. His voice was thick with emotion. The scratching stopped. The girl didn't jump. She didn't look up with joy. She slowly turned her head, her m

  • CHAPTER 011: The Master's Room

The morning sun hit the mansion, but it didn't bring any warmth. Inside, the air was thick with the smell of burnt coffee and bitterness. Bernadette Hastings stood at the top of the stairs, her silk robe fluttering behind her. She looked down at the foyer, where Thiago was calmly eating an apple. He looked far too comfortable for a man who had been a prisoner only weeks ago. "I’ve called the lawyers, Thiago," Bernadette shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "The 'Debt Observer' rule only applies to the office space and common areas. It does not give you the right to stay in this house overnight. Pack your things and get out before I have the guards drag you to the curb." Thiago didn't look up. He took another bite of the apple, chewed slowly, and then pulled a single sheet of paper from his pocket. He walked up the stairs, his boots thumping heavily on the carpet. "You missed the fine print, Bernadette," he said, stopping just one step below her. He was taller, and the

The clock in the grand hallway struck midnight. The sound echoed through the house like a death knell. Henry and Bernadette were slumped in the living room, surrounded by empty wine bottles and half-packed suitcases. The lights were dim, and the air was heavy with the smell of expensive gin and failure."We can still fix this," Henry muttered, his voice raspy. "We have the offshore accounts. We can move the money before the bank sees.""With what time, Henry?" Bernadette snapped. She looked at her chipped nails. "The Chairman bought our debt. He owns the walls. He owns the floor. He probably owns the air we’re breathing right now."The front door opened. There was no knock. There was no polite greeting. He wore a charcoal suit that fit him perfectly. His silver eyes were calm, almost bored.Henry jumped up, knocking over a gla

  • CHAPTER 009: The Uninvited Guest

The grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel was a palace of gold leaf and crystal, filled with the scent of lilies and expensive perfume. At the top of the marble staircase, Henry McHampton stood with his chest puffed out, adjusting his silk tie. Beside him, Bernadette looked like a queen in a deep red gown, her neck dripping with diamonds that were currently the only thing keeping the Hastings name afloat."He’s late," Henry whispered, his eyes darting toward the entrance. "The Chairman of Rad & Co. was supposed to be here for the toast. If we don’t get his signature on this merger tonight, the bank will freeze our accounts by Monday morning."Bernadette took a long sip of champagne, her eyes cold. "Relax, Henry. Men with billions like to make people wait. It’s a power move. Just make sure the reporters are ready."The heavy oak doors at the back of the hall swung open. The room went silent. Every head turned, expecting a fleet of bodyguards or a man with a mysterious mask.Instead, a sin

  • CHAPTER 008: The Ghost In The Machine

Thiago sat in his dimly lit study, the small, battered nursery rhyme book resting on the desk before him. He ignored the flickering screens of the stock market and the constant pings of his banking alerts. His entire world had shrunk to the size of a tiny, blue handprint on the back of a cheap cardboard cover. He traced the ridges of the ink with a trembling finger. "It's a child’s print, Stephen," Thiago whispered, his voice thick with a mix of dread and hope. "A small child. Maybe four or five years old."Stephen stood near the doorway, his face etched with concern. "Sir, it could be anyone’s. The clinic handled dozens of patients that night. Bernadette was adamant. She provided the medical clearance showing the procedure was finished.""Bernadette would lie to God if it meant hurting me," Thiago snapped, standing up so abruptly his chair screeched against the floor. "My sister was drugged into a stupor for five years, but she risked everything to hide this book in a secret pocket.
