The cabin felt too small for the weight of what had just been said.

Rain tapped against the wooden roof in an uneven, restless rhythm. Outside, the hunting horns sounded again — closer this time, carried on the cold wind from the direction of the border town. Ethan stood just inside the doorway, dagger still raised, the leather grip slick against his palm. His left shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. Selene had not lowered her blade. Lirael’s staff remained lit with a low silver glow that cast long, shifting shadows across the rough walls.

Elara looked up at them without flinching. Dried blood marked the corner of her mouth. The heavy iron cuffs around her wrists glowed faintly with suppression runes that pulsed in time with her breathing. Her eyes, though clearly exhausted, were sharp and clear. There was no pleading in them. Only a quiet, weary recognition.

“Her energy is unstable but not fully corrupted,” the System said inside Ethan’s mind. “She is actively resisting the Awakening’s influence. That alone makes her dangerous… and potentially valuable. Approach with extreme caution.”

Selene spoke first, her voice flat and practical. “How long have you been here?”

“Three days,” Elara answered. Her voice was hoarse, as if she had not used it much. “Aric’s people left me as bait. They knew the one who cracked the seal would eventually pass through these hills. They wanted me to slow you down… or kill you if the suppression failed and the whispers finally won.”

Ethan felt the old cold weight settle in his chest again — the same heavy, familiar feeling from the engagement party, from the warehouse floor, from every moment he had been used and then discarded. Trust had cost him everything once. He could still remember the exact pitch of Kelvin’s voice on the phone, casual and almost bored, confirming that the “dead weight” had been removed. The memory made his stomach tighten.

“Why should we believe you?” he asked. The words came out rougher than he intended.

Elara’s mouth twisted into something that was not quite a smile. “Because I was you. Different cycle. Different body. Same story. I woke up as the villain after dying in my own world. I tried to change the ending. I failed. The Backer kept me alive so the next ones would see what happens when you fight too hard and still lose.”

Lirael stepped closer, her expression unreadable in the silver light. “You were the heroine in your cycle?”

“I was,” Elara said. There was a flicker of old pain in her voice. “Then the story decided I made a better villain. The System stopped answering me after the first major Fracture. After that, the Awakening started whispering. It never fully stopped. Some days the whispers are quiet. Some days they are very loud.”

“She is telling the truth as far as I can measure,” the System confirmed. “But truth does not equal safety. Freeing her will cost Deviation Points to break the runes, and there is no guarantee she will not turn on you the moment the suppression weakens.”

The hunting horns sounded again, nearer still. The sound scraped along Ethan’s nerves. Selene glanced toward the door, jaw tight. “We do not have time for a long debate. Either we leave her or we take her. Choose.”

Ethan stared at Elara. The woman’s shoulders were tense, but she did not beg. She simply waited, as if she had already accepted whatever decision he made. Something about that quiet resignation felt painfully familiar. He had worn the same expression once — standing in the Grand Ballroom with an ice bucket in his hands while the people he had sacrificed everything for erased him without a second thought. The memory still tasted like copper and rain.

He made the choice before he could talk himself out of it.

“Break the cuffs,” he said.

“This will cost you,” the System warned. “But acknowledged.”

A faint golden light spread from Ethan’s hand as he pressed it against the cold iron. The suppression runes flared in resistance, burning against his palm, then cracked with a sharp sound like breaking glass. The cuffs fell away and hit the wooden floor with a dull clatter. Elara flexed her wrists slowly, wincing as blood returned to her hands. She rubbed the raw skin in silence for a moment.

“Thank you,” she said quietly. “I will not waste it.”

Selene still looked unconvinced, but she gave a short nod. “Can you walk?”

“I can run if I have to.”

They left the cabin within minutes. The rain had lightened to a cold drizzle that still managed to seep through clothes and into bones. Ethan’s shoulder ached with every movement. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to claim him. The emotional weight of the last two days sat on him like wet clothes he could not remove. He had freed another broken piece of the cycle. He did not yet know if that made him wiser or simply more reckless.

They moved northwest through the hills, staying under the cover of trees. Elara kept pace despite her obvious exhaustion, though her breathing was carefully controlled. Lirael walked slightly apart from the others, as if still deciding where her loyalties belonged. Selene led with the same quiet efficiency as before, but Ethan noticed the way her eyes kept scanning the treeline.

“Multiple signatures are closing from the southeast,” the System reported. “At least one is Aric. Two others carry similar corruption. They are moving faster than expected. You have perhaps twenty minutes before they reach this ridge.”

Ethan glanced at Elara. Rain ran down his face and dripped from his chin. “You said the Backer kept you as a warning. What does he actually want from me?”

Elara’s expression darkened. She wiped rain from her eyes with the back of one newly freed hand. “He wants the cycle to end on his terms. Most of the failed ones want the story restored so they can return to sleep. The Backer wants something different. He believes if the right anomaly survives long enough and then breaks in the correct way, the Awakening can be controlled instead of merely endured. He thinks you might be that anomaly.”

The words settled heavily in Ethan’s chest. Controlled. Used. The same pattern he had already lived through once. The same pattern that had left him bleeding on a warehouse floor while the people he had given everything to celebrated his erasure.

“I am not interested in being anyone’s tool,” he said. The words came out harder than he expected.

“Neither was I,” Elara replied. There was no bitterness in her voice, only a tired honesty. “That is why I am still fighting the whispers.”

They reached a narrow ridge overlooking a wooded valley. Selene raised a hand and they stopped. In the distance, dark shapes moved between the trees below — too organized to be ordinary search parties, too purposeful to be anything but hunters.

“They have already cut the main path west,” the System said. “There is a secondary route along the river, but it will take you closer to the forming avatar’s influence. Risk either way.”

Selene looked at Ethan. Rain clung to her lashes. “Your call. You are the one they want most.”

Ethan stared down at the moving figures. His body hurt. His mind was heavy with the knowledge of every failed predecessor and the quiet man who had tried to end the cycle before him. The old feeling of being discarded tried to rise again, cold and familiar, but he forced it down. He had already been erased once. He refused to let it happen a second time — not by the Hargroves, not by the story, and not by the Backer.

“We take the river route,” he said. His voice was rough but steady. “If they want me so badly, they can work for it.”

Elara gave a tired, almost genuine smile. Blood still stained the edge of her teeth. “That is the first thing every one of us says. Try to mean it longer than the rest of us did.”

They turned toward the river path as the hunting horns rose again behind them, closer and clearer than ever. The sound followed them into the trees like a promise.

The First Fracture continued to widen.

And somewhere ahead, the Awakening was still watching.

To be continued...

  • Chapter 11: The Western Road

The tunnel felt endless. Ethan ran with one hand pressed against the rough stone wall to keep his balance. The air was cold and damp, thick with the smell of wet earth, old roots, and the faint metallic scent of his own blood. Every step sent a dull, stubborn throb through his left shoulder where the shadow spear had struck. The System’s healing had stopped the bleeding and closed the worst of the wound, but the deep ache remained — a constant reminder that his body was still struggling to keep up with the night’s violence. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to pull him down. His lungs burned with every breath. Selene led the way, moving with quiet certainty even in the near-darkness. Her footsteps were almost silent. Lirael followed close behind Ethan, her staff dimmed to a soft silver glow that barely lit the path ahead. None of them spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their uneven footsteps, the distant roar o

  • Chapter 10: No Safe Ground

The courtyard of the old tannery felt like a cage closing in.Rain hammered the cracked stone in heavy sheets. The storm above twisted tighter with every passing second, purple lightning flashing inside the dark clouds like veins of something alive. Ethan stood with his back almost against the wall, dagger raised, chest heaving. Every breath scraped his throat raw. His left shoulder still burned from the earlier spear of shadow, the numbness only half-cleared by the System’s healing. Selene stood at his right, blade steady, rain running down her face in thin lines. Lirael was a few paces to the left, silver light still flickering weakly around her staff. Between them and any possible exit stood two corrupted figures — Aric Voss and the second man who had just lowered his hood. The second man’s face was familiar too. In the original novel he had been one of the lesser nobles who helped push Vesper toward his final destruction. Now his eyes glowed with

The wave of dark energy hit them like a living wall of ice and hate.Ethan barely had time to react. He threw himself sideways, grabbing Selene’s arm and yanking her with him as the blast tore through the trees. Bark exploded outward. The ground cracked open. The freezing force of the attack left the air itself feeling brittle, like it might shatter if he breathed too hard. His heart slammed against his ribs so violently he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“That attack carried residual Fracture energy,” the System said, voice tight and urgent inside his head. “He’s not just a failed transmigrator — he’s been feeding on the Awakening for years. Direct contact will corrupt you. Stay mobile.”Ethan rolled to his feet, lungs burning, every muscle screaming from the night’s endless fighting. The numbness from earlier wounds still clung to his left arm. His body felt wrong in a way that went beyond pain -it was too strong, too fast and still felt like i

  • Chapter 8: The First Fracture

The herald’s dark tendrils lashed out like living whips, tearing through the ruins with terrifying ease. Ethan dove behind a crumbling pillar as one passed inches from his head, the freezing energy it left behind making the air itself feel brittle. His heart pounded so hard he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“Global Plot Event active,” the System said, its voice strained. “The Awakening is now aware of you, Ethan. Every major faction will feel the shift. Survival probability down to 0.04%. This is the world trying to force the story back on track by any means necessary.”Selene fought beside him, her blade a blur as she cut through tendrils that tried to ensnare her. Lirael, the silver-haired heroine, had joined the fray against the herald as well — her magic clashing with the dark energy in brilliant explosions of light and shadow. For the moment, their rivalry was forgotten in the face of this greater threat.“This thing shouldn’t exist yet!” Lirael shouted,

  • Chapter 7: Storm of Awakening

The dark storm churned across the sky like a living thing, purple lightning crackling within its swirling clouds. It moved faster than any natural weather, drawn toward them with unnatural purpose. Ethan’s legs burned as he ran beside Selene, the numbness from the Void Watcher’s curse still lingering in his arm like a cold shadow. Every step sent a fresh wave of exhaustion through him, but stopping meant death.“The Awakening is accelerating,” the System said, its voice tight with urgency. “That storm isn’t just weather. It’s looking for anomalies — for you. Survival probability down to 0.09%. We need to find shelter or break its tracking.”Selene glanced back, her silver hair whipping in the rising wind. “The border town is two hours away at this pace. We won’t make it if that storm catches us. There’s an old ruin half a mile east. It might give us temporary cover.”Ethan nodded, his mind racing. The revelation about his father’s book still weighed on him like a st
