The black tide rose fast.

Ethan barely had time to shout before the unnatural water surged under the stone arches, thick and cold as liquid shadow. It moved with purpose, climbing the stone as if it had hands. Selene grabbed his arm and yanked him hard toward higher ground along the bank. Elara moved with them without needing to be told. Lirael sent a sharp burst of silver light into the rising water, forcing it back for a few precious seconds and buying them the space they needed.

Aric’s laughter echoed from the ridge above, calm and almost pleased.

“Run if you like,” he called. “The river will find you eventually.”

They scrambled up the muddy slope, boots slipping, hands scraping against wet stone, until they reached a narrow ledge half-hidden behind one of the larger arches. The space was tight — barely enough room for the four of them to press in without touching. The stone at their backs was cold and damp. Below, the black water continued to rise, lapping hungrily at the base of the structure with a sound like slow breathing.

“Aric is not climbing down yet,” the System reported. “He is content to let the distorted river do the work. You have a short window. The influence here is strong. Rest if you can, but stay alert.”

They pressed into the small alcove, breathing hard. Rain still dripped from the stone above them in irregular cold drops. Ethan’s shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. His clothes were soaked through and clung to his skin like a second, freezing layer.

The cold had settled deep into his muscles, making them feel slow and heavy, but the nearness of the others created a different kind of heat in the cramped space that he could not ignore.

Selene was closest to him. Their bodies touched every time either of them shifted even slightly. He could feel the rise and fall of her breathing against his side, the solid, living warmth of her through the wet leather and cloth. After days of nothing but cold, pain, running, and the constant knowledge that the world wanted him erased, the simple contact felt almost overwhelming. It cut through the numbness in a way nothing else had.

Elara sat a little apart, knees drawn up, eyes closed as she visibly fought whatever whispers the Awakening sent her. Lirael kept watch toward the river, staff ready, her expression carefully controlled.

For a long moment no one spoke. The only sounds were the unnatural water below, the drip of rain, and their own uneven breathing.

Selene turned her head slightly. Her voice was low, meant only for him. “You’re shaking.”

“Cold,” Ethan answered, though that was only part of the truth. The adrenaline was crashing hard. The constant tension of the last days had left him raw, scraped down to something more honest than he usually allowed. Being this close to someone who had repeatedly chosen to stand with him instead of against him stirred something he had not let himself feel in a very long time.

In his old life, closeness had always come with a price. He had given warmth, time, loyalty, and every resource he had, and it had been taken without return. The engagement party still lived under his skin — the ice bucket in his hands, the applause, the way Mia had looked at him with brief pity before turning back to her richer future. He had learned to keep people at a distance after that. Distance was safer.

Selene studied his face in the dim light that filtered through the rain. Then, without asking permission, she reached up and wiped a streak of blood and rain from his cheek with her thumb. Her fingers were cooler than his skin, but they lingered a moment longer than necessary. The small contact sent a clear, unwanted shiver down his spine.

“You’re allowed to feel something other than survival,” she said quietly.

Ethan met her eyes. The usual sharp focus was still there, the readiness for violence, but underneath it was something warmer and more dangerous.

Something that had been building through every shared fight, every narrow escape, every time she had chosen to stay when walking away would have been smarter. The cramped space, the immediate danger just beyond the stone, and the simple fact that they were both still breathing made the air between them feel charged.

He did not pull away when she leaned in.

The kiss started slow — careful, almost testing, as if either of them might still change their minds. Then it deepened as the tension of the last days found an outlet. Selene’s hand slid to the back of his neck, fingers threading into his wet hair and holding him there. Ethan’s good arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them. Her body was warm against his cold, soaked clothes. The contrast made every point of contact feel sharper, more real.

She made a soft sound against his mouth when his hand settled on the curve of her hip. The leather of her gear was wet and cold under his palm, but the heat of her skin beneath it was not. For a few stolen moments the river, the hunters, the cycle, and the weight of every failed predecessor faded. There was only the taste of rain and blood on her lips, the solid reality of her pressed against him, and the low, hungry way she kissed him back — like she had also been holding something in for too long.

When they finally broke apart, both were breathing harder than the climb alone could explain. Selene’s forehead rested against his for a second longer. Her breath brushed his mouth.

“That,” she murmured, voice rougher than usual, “was not part of the plan.”

“I know,” Ethan said. His own voice sounded unfamiliar to him — lower, scraped raw by more than just exhaustion.

A faint, almost amused sound came from Elara’s direction. “At least one of us is still capable of wanting something that isn’t survival or revenge.”

Lirael glanced over, expression carefully neutral, but the silver light around her staff flickered once before she looked away again.

“Heart rate elevated,” the System noted, dry as ever.

“I will refrain from further commentary. However, Aric has begun moving. You have approximately eight minutes before he reaches this side of the arches.”

The moment broke, but it did not disappear. Selene’s hand slipped from Ethan’s neck, yet her eyes lingered on his a second longer — a silent acknowledgment that whatever had just happened between them was not finished, only postponed. The warmth of her body still imprinted against his side even after she shifted back into readiness.

They adjusted positions as best they could in the tight space. The black water still churned below, higher now. The hunting horns sounded again, closer and clearer.

Ethan adjusted his grip on the dagger. The taste of the kiss still lingered on his lips. The warmth of Selene’s body was still present against his memory of cold and isolation. For the first time since waking in this world, something other than pain, determination, and the old cold weight of being discarded burned under his skin.

He had been erased once.

Tonight, for a few stolen minutes, he had been reminded that he was still capable of wanting more than just survival.

Aric’s voice rose from the ridge once more, closer and sharper than before.

“I can smell the desperation from here. Time to come out, anomaly.”

Selene’s fingers brushed Ethan’s wrist once — brief, deliberate, a private signal — before she raised her blade again.

The river path was no longer just an escape route.

It had become something more complicated, and far more human.

  • Chapter 13: The River Path

The river path was narrower than Ethan expected. They moved in single file along the muddy bank, the dark water rushing loudly on their right. The rain had slowed to a thin, cold drizzle that still managed to find every gap in their clothes and trickle down the back of Ethan’s neck. His boots sank slightly with each step, the mud pulling at him as if the ground itself wanted to keep him there. His left shoulder continued to throb in time with his heartbeat. The numbness from the earlier shadow wound had faded, but a deep, bruise-like ache remained, making every swing of his arm feel heavier than it should. His legs burned. His lungs felt tight.Selene walked at the front, blade drawn, eyes constantly scanning the treeline and the higher ground. Elara followed close behind her, still rubbing her freed wrists from time to time as if surprised they were no longer bound. Lirael brought up the rear, staff held low but ready, her silver light kept deliberately dim.

  • Chapter 12: The Bound Heroine

The cabin felt too small for the weight of what had just been said.Rain tapped against the wooden roof in an uneven, restless rhythm. Outside, the hunting horns sounded again — closer this time, carried on the cold wind from the direction of the border town. Ethan stood just inside the doorway, dagger still raised, the leather grip slick against his palm. His left shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. Selene had not lowered her blade. Lirael’s staff remained lit with a low silver glow that cast long, shifting shadows across the rough walls.Elara looked up at them without flinching. Dried blood marked the corner of her mouth. The heavy iron cuffs around her wrists glowed faintly with suppression runes that pulsed in time with her breathing. Her eyes, though clearly exhausted, were sharp and clear. There was no pleading in them. Only a quiet, weary recognition.“Her energy is unstable but not fully corrupted,” the System said inside Ethan’s mind. “S

  • Chapter 11: The Western Road

The tunnel felt endless. Ethan ran with one hand pressed against the rough stone wall to keep his balance. The air was cold and damp, thick with the smell of wet earth, old roots, and the faint metallic scent of his own blood. Every step sent a dull, stubborn throb through his left shoulder where the shadow spear had struck. The System’s healing had stopped the bleeding and closed the worst of the wound, but the deep ache remained — a constant reminder that his body was still struggling to keep up with the night’s violence. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to pull him down. His lungs burned with every breath. Selene led the way, moving with quiet certainty even in the near-darkness. Her footsteps were almost silent. Lirael followed close behind Ethan, her staff dimmed to a soft silver glow that barely lit the path ahead. None of them spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their uneven footsteps, the distant roar o

  • Chapter 10: No Safe Ground

The courtyard of the old tannery felt like a cage closing in.Rain hammered the cracked stone in heavy sheets. The storm above twisted tighter with every passing second, purple lightning flashing inside the dark clouds like veins of something alive. Ethan stood with his back almost against the wall, dagger raised, chest heaving. Every breath scraped his throat raw. His left shoulder still burned from the earlier spear of shadow, the numbness only half-cleared by the System’s healing. Selene stood at his right, blade steady, rain running down her face in thin lines. Lirael was a few paces to the left, silver light still flickering weakly around her staff. Between them and any possible exit stood two corrupted figures — Aric Voss and the second man who had just lowered his hood. The second man’s face was familiar too. In the original novel he had been one of the lesser nobles who helped push Vesper toward his final destruction. Now his eyes glowed with

  • Chapter 9: The Corrupted Echo

The wave of dark energy hit them like a living wall of ice and hate.Ethan barely had time to react. He threw himself sideways, grabbing Selene’s arm and yanking her with him as the blast tore through the trees. Bark exploded outward. The ground cracked open. The freezing force of the attack left the air itself feeling brittle, like it might shatter if he breathed too hard. His heart slammed against his ribs so violently he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“That attack carried residual Fracture energy,” the System said, voice tight and urgent inside his head. “He’s not just a failed transmigrator — he’s been feeding on the Awakening for years. Direct contact will corrupt you. Stay mobile.”Ethan rolled to his feet, lungs burning, every muscle screaming from the night’s endless fighting. The numbness from earlier wounds still clung to his left arm. His body felt wrong in a way that went beyond pain -it was too strong, too fast and still felt like i
