The Court Mage’s staff slammed into the reforming bridge with a resounding crack. Purple energy surged across the broken wood, knitting the shattered planks back together at an unnatural speed. The structure groaned as it stabilized, glowing with dark, pulsating runes. Dawn was still a distant promise on the horizon, and the night felt heavier than ever.

Ethan stood beside Selene, his bloody dagger gripped tightly in a hand that still didn’t feel entirely his own. His body ached from the night’s endless fighting — the stab wound in his side throbbed dully, the gashes on his shoulder and arm burned, and exhaustion clung to him like a second skin. But the real weight was in his mind. The System’s revelation about his father’s book kept echoing: The real reason Vesper had to die on day 365 was to prevent something far worse. What had he awakened by refusing to follow the script?

“This is bad, Ethan,” the System said, its voice tight with concern. “Court Mages are elite enforcers. This one has been heavily empowered by whoever is backing the hunt. Survival probability down to 0.08%. You and Selene need to work together or you won’t make it to sunrise.”

Selene’s eyes narrowed as she watched the mage approach with measured steps. “He’s no ordinary enforcer,” she muttered. “The purple aura means he’s drawing power from a higher source. We can’t fight him head-on. We need to disrupt his focus or run.”

Ethan nodded, forcing himself to push past the fatigue and the lingering disconnect he felt in this body. He wasn’t a warrior. He had spent years enduring, sacrificing, and swallowing his pride for people who ultimately discarded him. Now he was expected to stand against one of the King’s most dangerous servants. The pressure made his chest tight.

The mage stopped at the middle of the bridge, staff raised high. His voice boomed across the ravine, cold and final.

“By order of the Crown and the will of higher powers, Vesper Kane is to be executed on sight. No mercy. No capture.”

Purple lightning crackled along the staff. The mage pointed it toward them, and a bolt of dark energy shot forward like a spear.

“Move!” Selene shouted.

They dove in opposite directions. The bolt struck the ground where they had been standing, exploding in a shower of corrupted energy that withered the grass and left a smoking crater. The force of the blast threw Ethan sideways. He rolled painfully across the dirt, the impact jarring his wounds and sending fresh spikes of pain through his body.

“He’s charging another one,” the System warned urgently. “Use Minor Plot Insight. Look for the opening.”

Ethan activated the skill as he scrambled to his feet. Ghostly blue lines of possible futures flickered across his vision. Most ended in death within seconds. One narrow path showed a chance — a moment where the mage’s focus would shift if they could force him to defend himself.

“Selene!” Ethan called. “Distract him!”

She was already moving, a shadow in the darkness. She darted forward with incredible speed, blade flashing as she closed the distance to the bridge. The mage turned his staff toward her and unleashed another bolt. Selene twisted mid-air, barely avoiding the attack. The energy grazed her cloak, leaving a smoking edge.

Ethan used the distraction. He charged toward the bridge’s edge, dagger ready. His legs burned with exhaustion, but he pushed through. As the mage prepared another spell, Ethan threw his dagger with everything he had left. The blade spun through the air and struck the mage’s staff, knocking it slightly off course.

The spell went wide, exploding against a tree and sending burning splinters flying. The mage stumbled back a step, surprise flashing across his face beneath the hood.

“Nice throw!” the System said. “Survival probability up to 0.15%. Keep the pressure on!”

Selene pressed the advantage, leaping onto the bridge and engaging the mage in close combat. Her blade danced against his staff, sparks flying with every clash. The mage was powerful, but Selene was fast and agile, forcing him to focus on defense.

Ethan ran onto the bridge behind her, searching for an opening. The wood beneath his feet felt unstable, still partially corrupted by the mage’s magic. His heart pounded. He wasn’t a hero or a villain. He was just a man who had been used up and thrown away. But he refused to let this world do the same.

The mage snarled and slammed his staff into the bridge. A wave of purple energy rippled outward, knocking Selene back and nearly throwing Ethan off his feet. The bridge groaned dangerously.

“You dare interfere with the will of the Crown?” the mage hissed, turning his glowing eyes on Ethan. “Vesper Kane… or whatever you are. Your existence is an anomaly. The higher powers demand your death.”

“Higher powers?” Ethan thought, a chill running down his spine. The System mentioned something rewriting the rules. Is this part of it?

He didn’t have time to dwell on it. The mage pointed his staff directly at him. Purple lightning gathered at the tip, building into a devastating attack.

Selene recovered and charged again, but the mage created a barrier of dark energy that blocked her path. “Stay out of this, shadow. This anomaly must be erased.”

Ethan’s mind raced. He activated Minor Plot Insight again. The ghostly futures showed one desperate chance — a weak point in the mage’s barrier where the magic was thinnest.

He sprinted forward, ignoring the burning pain in his side. As the mage released the lightning bolt, Ethan threw himself into a desperate slide across the bridge. The energy passed inches above him, the heat singing his hair. He came up inside the barrier and slammed his dagger into the mage’s side with all his remaining strength.

The mage gasped, staggering back. The barrier shattered. Selene seized the opening, her blade flashing as she struck the mage’s staff, knocking it from his hands.

The enforcer fell to one knee, blood dripping from his side. But instead of fear, a twisted smile crossed his face.

“You delay the inevitable,” he rasped. “The higher powers have already seen your survival. The awakening has begun. Your father’s warning was meaningless.”

Ethan froze. My father? How does he know about the book?

The mage laughed weakly, even as his life faded. “The story was never meant to be changed… only delayed.”

With his final breath, the mage slammed his hand against the bridge. A final surge of purple energy exploded outward. The bridge began to collapse again, this time taking the mage with it into the ravine.

Selene grabbed Ethan’s arm and pulled him back just in time. They stumbled onto solid ground as the last of the bridge fell into the roaring river below.

For a moment, there was only the sound of their heavy breathing and the river’s roar.

Selene turned to him, eyes wide with a mix of suspicion and awe. “What did he mean by ‘your father’s warning’? And what awakening?”

Ethan leaned against a tree, chest heaving, mind spinning. The System stayed silent for once, as if processing the mage’s words too.

“Ethan…” the System finally spoke, its voice unusually hesitant. “I just unlocked another fragment. The book your father gave you… it wasn’t just a warning about Vesper’s fate. It was a record of previous attempts. Previous transmigrators who tried to change the story. All of them failed. And every time they survived too long… something worse woke up.”

Selene stepped closer, her blade still drawn but pointed downward. “You’re going to tell me everything. Because if what that mage said is true, we may not have 365 days. We may not even have 365 hours.”

The first rays of dawn began to break over the horizon, painting the sky in soft pinks and golds.

But the night’s dangers were far from over.

In the distance, new horns sounded — deeper, more ominous. The true hunt was only beginning.

And somewhere out there, the mysterious backer was watching. Waiting.

The awakening had started.

Outside, the hunting horns sounded again — closer this time, carried on the cold wind from the direction of the border town. Ethan stood just inside the doorway, dagger still raised, the leather grip slick against his palm. His left shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. Selene had not lowered her blade. Lirael’s staff remained lit with a low silver glow that cast long, shifting shadows across the rough walls.Elara looked up at them without flinching. Dried blood marked the corner of her mouth. The heavy iron cuffs around her wrists glowed faintly with suppression runes that pulsed in time with her breathing. Her eyes, though clearly exhausted, were sharp and clear. There was no pleading in them. Only a quiet, weary recognition.“Her energy is unstable but not fully corrupted,” the System said inside Ethan’s mind. “S

The tunnel felt endless. Ethan ran with one hand pressed against the rough stone wall to keep his balance. The air was cold and damp, thick with the smell of wet earth, old roots, and the faint metallic scent of his own blood. Every step sent a dull, stubborn throb through his left shoulder where the shadow spear had struck. The System’s healing had stopped the bleeding and closed the worst of the wound, but the deep ache remained — a constant reminder that his body was still struggling to keep up with the night’s violence. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to pull him down. His lungs burned with every breath. Selene led the way, moving with quiet certainty even in the near-darkness. Her footsteps were almost silent. Lirael followed close behind Ethan, her staff dimmed to a soft silver glow that barely lit the path ahead. None of them spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their uneven footsteps, the distant roar o

The storm above twisted tighter with every passing second, purple lightning flashing inside the dark clouds like veins of something alive. Ethan stood with his back almost against the wall, dagger raised, chest heaving. Every breath scraped his throat raw. His left shoulder still burned from the earlier spear of shadow, the numbness only half-cleared by the System’s healing. Selene stood at his right, blade steady, rain running down her face in thin lines. Lirael was a few paces to the left, silver light still flickering weakly around her staff. Between them and any possible exit stood two corrupted figures — Aric Voss and the second man who had just lowered his hood. The second man’s face was familiar too. In the original novel he had been one of the lesser nobles who helped push Vesper toward his final destruction. Now his eyes glowed with

He threw himself sideways, grabbing Selene’s arm and yanking her with him as the blast tore through the trees. Bark exploded outward. The ground cracked open. The freezing force of the attack left the air itself feeling brittle, like it might shatter if he breathed too hard. His heart slammed against his ribs so violently he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“That attack carried residual Fracture energy,” the System said, voice tight and urgent inside his head. “He’s not just a failed transmigrator — he’s been feeding on the Awakening for years. Direct contact will corrupt you. Stay mobile.”Ethan rolled to his feet, lungs burning, every muscle screaming from the night’s endless fighting. The numbness from earlier wounds still clung to his left arm. His body felt wrong in a way that went beyond pain -it was too strong, too fast and still felt like i

  • Chapter 8: The First Fracture

The herald’s dark tendrils lashed out like living whips, tearing through the ruins with terrifying ease. Ethan dove behind a crumbling pillar as one passed inches from his head, the freezing energy it left behind making the air itself feel brittle. His heart pounded so hard he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“Global Plot Event active,” the System said, its voice strained. “The Awakening is now aware of you, Ethan. Every major faction will feel the shift. Survival probability down to 0.04%. This is the world trying to force the story back on track by any means necessary.”Selene fought beside him, her blade a blur as she cut through tendrils that tried to ensnare her. Lirael, the silver-haired heroine, had joined the fray against the herald as well — her magic clashing with the dark energy in brilliant explosions of light and shadow. For the moment, their rivalry was forgotten in the face of this greater threat.“This thing shouldn’t exist yet!” Lirael shouted,

Ethan’s legs burned as he ran beside Selene, the numbness from the Void Watcher’s curse still lingering in his arm like a cold shadow. Every step sent a fresh wave of exhaustion through him, but stopping meant death.“The Awakening is accelerating,” the System said, its voice tight with urgency. “That storm isn’t just weather. It’s looking for anomalies — for you. Survival probability down to 0.09%. We need to find shelter or break its tracking.”Selene glanced back, her silver hair whipping in the rising wind. “The border town is two hours away at this pace. We won’t make it if that storm catches us. There’s an old ruin half a mile east. It might give us temporary cover.”Ethan nodded, his mind racing. The revelation about his father’s book still weighed on him like a st
