The herald’s dark tendrils lashed out like living whips, tearing through the ruins with terrifying ease. Ethan dove behind a crumbling pillar as one passed inches from his head, the freezing energy it left behind making the air itself feel brittle. His heart pounded so hard he could hear it over the storm’s roar.

“Global Plot Event active,” the System said, its voice strained. “The Awakening is now aware of you, Ethan. Every major faction will feel the shift. Survival probability down to 0.04%. This is the world trying to force the story back on track by any means necessary.”

Selene fought beside him, her blade a blur as she cut through tendrils that tried to ensnare her. Lirael, the silver-haired heroine, had joined the fray against the herald as well — her magic clashing with the dark energy in brilliant explosions of light and shadow. For the moment, their rivalry was forgotten in the face of this greater threat.

“This thing shouldn’t exist yet!” Lirael shouted, her voice tight with strain. “The Balance isn’t supposed to break this early!”

Ethan’s mind raced. The book. His father’s warning. The cycle of previous transmigrators. Everything was connected. He wasn’t just fighting for his life — he was fighting against a story that had already written his death.

“The herald is the story’s immune system,” the System explained urgently. “It’s trying to erase the anomaly — you. Use the last of your Deviation Points. A full Plot Fracture might weaken it, but it will come at a heavy cost.”

Ethan didn’t hesitate. He spent nearly all his remaining points in one desperate surge. The world seemed to stutter around him. Time slowed. The rules of the story bent and cracked.

He charged forward, dagger raised. The herald turned its starry eyes toward him, sensing the fracture in reality.

“You dare?” it hissed, voice layered and ancient. “You are nothing but a temporary error.”

Ethan slammed his palm against the herald’s chest and pushed every ounce of Deviation energy into it. Golden cracks spread across the creature’s shadowy form. It shrieked — a sound that seemed to tear at the fabric of the world itself.

The herald staggered back, dark energy leaking from its wounds. “This changes… nothing. The Awakening… has already begun.”

The creature dissolved into swirling shadows that faded into the storm. For a moment, silence fell over the ruins.

Selene lowered her blade, breathing hard. Lirael stared at Ethan with a mixture of shock and suspicion.

“What are you?” the heroine demanded. “No ordinary man could do what you just did.”

Before Ethan could answer, the System’s voice cut in with raw alarm.

“Ethan… something’s wrong. The Fracture worked, but it sent ripples across the entire story. I’m detecting multiple anomalies now. Other transmigrators. They’re waking up too — and they’re not friendly.”

A new notification flashed in red.

[Global Plot Event: The First Fracture — Active]

[All previous failed transmigrators are stirring. Some will hunt you to restore the original timeline. Others will seek alliance. The Awakening grows stronger.]

Selene stepped closer to Ethan, her expression grave. “We need to reach my contacts immediately. If other transmigrators are waking up, the balance is truly breaking.”

Lirael lowered her staff slightly, though she still looked ready to fight. “If what you say is true… the hero needs to know. The empire needs to know. But if you’re the cause of this—”

A deep, resonant boom shook the ground. The storm above the ruins began to twist into a massive vortex. From its center, a colossal silhouette started to take form — something enormous, ancient, and wrong. Tentacles of darkness reached down from the clouds, probing the land below.

“The Awakening is manifesting an avatar,” the System whispered, fear clear in its tone. “It’s looking for the biggest anomaly. You, Ethan.”

Selene grabbed Ethan’s arm. “We run. Now. The border town is our only chance.”

Lirael hesitated for a split second, then nodded. “I will report what I saw. But if you truly are trying to save this world… prove it.”

The three of them began moving quickly through the ruins toward the borderlands. The storm followed, its tendrils reaching closer with every passing minute. Ethan’s body screamed for rest, but he pushed on, the weight of his father’s book and the cycle of failed transmigrators pressing down on him.

As they ran, Selene spoke quietly. “There are rumors of a hidden archive in the borderlands. Records of previous cycles. If we can reach it, we might find a way to stop the Awakening… or at least understand how to survive it.”

Ethan nodded, but a new unease settled in his chest. The System had mentioned other transmigrators. Some would hunt him. Others might seek alliance. How many had come before him? How many had failed?

“One more thing, Ethan,” the System said softly, almost reluctantly. “Your father… he wasn’t just a guardian. According to the unlocked memories, he was the last successful survivor of a previous cycle. He tried to end the loop by sending the book across worlds. You’re his final attempt.”

The revelation hit Ethan like a physical blow. His father had lived this nightmare before him. Had tried to break the cycle. And now the responsibility rested on his shoulders.

The storm roared louder. One of the dark tendrils slammed into the ground ahead of them, cracking the earth and forcing them to change direction.

Lirael raised her staff, silver magic flaring. “I’ll hold it back as long as I can. Go!”

Selene and Ethan broke into a sprint. The border town’s lights appeared in the distance — their only hope for temporary safety.

But as they ran, a new figure stepped out from the shadows on the path ahead — a man with cold eyes and a familiar, cruel smile that Ethan recognized from the original novel.

One of Vesper’s former allies. A traitor who had helped bring about the original villain’s downfall.

“Vesper,” the man said with a mocking bow. “Or should I say… the new player? The backer sends his regards. He’s very interested in meeting the one who broke the cycle.”

The man raised his hand. Dark energy — similar to the herald’s — gathered around him.

“Another corrupted transmigrator,” the System warned. “One who failed in a previous cycle and now serves the Awakening. This is bad, Ethan.”

Selene drew her blade again. “We don’t have time for this.”

The storm roared above them. The corrupted transmigrator smiled wider.

“Welcome to the real game,” he said.

And the dark energy exploded toward them.

The cabin felt too small for the weight of what had just been said.Rain tapped against the wooden roof in an uneven, restless rhythm. Outside, the hunting horns sounded again — closer this time, carried on the cold wind from the direction of the border town. Ethan stood just inside the doorway, dagger still raised, the leather grip slick against his palm. His left shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. Selene had not lowered her blade. Lirael’s staff remained lit with a low silver glow that cast long, shifting shadows across the rough walls.Elara looked up at them without flinching. Dried blood marked the corner of her mouth. The heavy iron cuffs around her wrists glowed faintly with suppression runes that pulsed in time with her breathing. Her eyes, though clearly exhausted, were sharp and clear. There was no pleading in them. Only a quiet, weary recognition.“Her energy is unstable but not fully corrupted,” the System said inside Ethan’s mind. “S

  • Chapter 11: The Western Road

The tunnel felt endless. Ethan ran with one hand pressed against the rough stone wall to keep his balance. The air was cold and damp, thick with the smell of wet earth, old roots, and the faint metallic scent of his own blood. Every step sent a dull, stubborn throb through his left shoulder where the shadow spear had struck. The System’s healing had stopped the bleeding and closed the worst of the wound, but the deep ache remained — a constant reminder that his body was still struggling to keep up with the night’s violence. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to pull him down. His lungs burned with every breath. Selene led the way, moving with quiet certainty even in the near-darkness. Her footsteps were almost silent. Lirael followed close behind Ethan, her staff dimmed to a soft silver glow that barely lit the path ahead. None of them spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their uneven footsteps, the distant roar o

The courtyard of the old tannery felt like a cage closing in.Rain hammered the cracked stone in heavy sheets. The storm above twisted tighter with every passing second, purple lightning flashing inside the dark clouds like veins of something alive. Ethan stood with his back almost against the wall, dagger raised, chest heaving. Every breath scraped his throat raw. His left shoulder still burned from the earlier spear of shadow, the numbness only half-cleared by the System’s healing. Selene stood at his right, blade steady, rain running down her face in thin lines. Lirael was a few paces to the left, silver light still flickering weakly around her staff. Between them and any possible exit stood two corrupted figures — Aric Voss and the second man who had just lowered his hood. The second man’s face was familiar too. In the original novel he had been one of the lesser nobles who helped push Vesper toward his final destruction. Now his eyes glowed with

He threw himself sideways, grabbing Selene’s arm and yanking her with him as the blast tore through the trees. Bark exploded outward. The ground cracked open. The freezing force of the attack left the air itself feeling brittle, like it might shatter if he breathed too hard. His heart slammed against his ribs so violently he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“That attack carried residual Fracture energy,” the System said, voice tight and urgent inside his head. “He’s not just a failed transmigrator — he’s been feeding on the Awakening for years. Direct contact will corrupt you. Stay mobile.”Ethan rolled to his feet, lungs burning, every muscle screaming from the night’s endless fighting. The numbness from earlier wounds still clung to his left arm. His body felt wrong in a way that went beyond pain -it was too strong, too fast and still felt like i

The dark storm churned across the sky like a living thing, purple lightning crackling within its swirling clouds. It moved faster than any natural weather, drawn toward them with unnatural purpose. Ethan’s legs burned as he ran beside Selene, the numbness from the Void Watcher’s curse still lingering in his arm like a cold shadow. Every step sent a fresh wave of exhaustion through him, but stopping meant death.“The Awakening is accelerating,” the System said, its voice tight with urgency. “That storm isn’t just weather. It’s looking for anomalies — for you. Survival probability down to 0.09%. We need to find shelter or break its tracking.”Selene glanced back, her silver hair whipping in the rising wind. “The border town is two hours away at this pace. We won’t make it if that storm catches us. There’s an old ruin half a mile east. It might give us temporary cover.”Ethan nodded, his mind racing. The revelation about his father’s book still weighed on him like a st
