The wave of dark energy hit them like a living wall of ice and hate.

Ethan barely had time to react. He threw himself sideways, grabbing Selene’s arm and yanking her with him as the blast tore through the trees. Bark exploded outward. The ground cracked open. The freezing force of the attack left the air itself feeling brittle, like it might shatter if he breathed too hard. His heart slammed against his ribs so violently he could hear it over the storm’s roar.

“That attack carried residual Fracture energy,” the System said, voice tight and urgent inside his head. “He’s not just a failed transmigrator — he’s been feeding on the Awakening for years. Direct contact will corrupt you. Stay mobile.”

Ethan rolled to his feet, lungs burning, every muscle screaming from the night’s endless fighting. The numbness from earlier wounds still clung to his left arm. His body felt wrong in a way that went beyond pain -it was too strong, too fast and still felt like it was not his. He was wearing another man’s skin, fighting another man’s battles, and the weight of it never left him.

The man who had blocked their path stepped fully into the open. Ethan’s stomach twisted. He knew that face. "Lord Aric Voss". In the original novel, he had been one of Vesper’s earliest allies and later one of the men who helped destroy him. Now his eyes glowed with the same starry darkness as the herald, and his smile was cold and empty.

“You look surprised,” Aric said, voice layered with strange echoes. “I remember that expression. I wore it myself once, when I first realised the story wasn’t finished with me.”

Selene didn’t wait for more talk. She moved like liquid shadow, blade flashing in a tight, lethal arc aimed at Aric’s throat. He blocked it with a shield of pure darkness. The clash sent sparks of black flying into the rain. Lirael recovered from the earlier blast and unleashed a concentrated silver lance of magic. Aric twisted, letting the spell only graze his shoulder. Where the light touched him, black blood hissed and steamed against the wet ground.

Ethan charged from the side, dagger low. He had almost nothing left in the way of Deviation Points, and his body was running on pure stubbornness. But the memory of the engagement party — the ice bucket in his hands, Mia’s pitying glance, Mrs Hargrove’s casual dismissal — burned hotter than any wound. He had already been erased once. He would not let it happen again.

Aric met him with a backhanded strike of pure force. The impact slammed into Ethan’s chest like a battering ram. He flew backwards and crashed hard against a tree, the air exploding from his lungs. Pain bloomed across his ribs. For a moment the world went white at the edges.

“Survival probability just dropped to 0.03%,” the System warned, almost gentle in its urgency. “You cannot win a prolonged fight. Break contact and run toward the border town. The wards there will slow him.”

“Go!” Selene shouted, forcing Aric back with a rapid series of cuts that rang like steel on stone. “I’ll buy you time!”

Ethan hesitated. Leaving someone behind felt too much like the old him — the man who always stayed, always sacrificed, always ended up discarded. The thought made his throat tight. But dying here would end everything his father had tried to protect. Everything the book had been trying to warn him about.

So he turned and ran.

Lirael covered their retreat with a wall of silver light that forced Aric to pause. The three of them sprinted through the dark forest as the storm raged overhead. Dark tendrils from the incomplete Awakening avatar continued to probe the ground behind them, cracking trees and earth with casual, terrifying power. Rain mixed with sweat and blood on Ethan’s face. His legs felt like lead. Every breath scraped his throat raw.

Aric’s laughter followed them through the trees, calm and mocking. “Run, little anomaly. The town won’t save you. The Backer already owns half the people inside it.”

They reached the outskirts of the border town just as the first true light of dawn began to thin the darkness. Smoke rose from several buildings. Shouts and the clash of steel echoed through the narrow streets. The town was already under attack.

“The Awakening’s influence is spreading faster than expected,” the System said. “Corrupted agents are already inside. Your original plan to hide here is compromised.”

Selene cursed under her breath, the first real crack in her usual composure. “There’s a secondary safe house beneath the old tannery. If we can reach it—”

Aric appeared ahead of them in a swirl of shadow, cutting off the main road into town. He looked almost bored, as if this were a game he had already won.

“I was told to bring you in alive if possible,” he said. “But the Backer didn’t specify in how many pieces.”

Lirael stepped forward, staff glowing brighter. “You’re no longer human. Whatever you once were, it’s gone.”

Aric tilted his head, studying her with mild interest. “And yet I remember everything. The fear. The hope. The moment the System stopped answering. You’ll understand soon enough.”

He raised both hands. Dozens of shadow spears formed in the air and launched toward them like a storm of black knives.

Ethan forced Minor Plot Insight to activate one last time. The ghostly futures flickered across his vision — most of them ended in death within seconds. One narrow, desperate path required them to split.

“Lirael — left alley!” he shouted, voice raw. “Selene with me!”

They separated. The spears slammed into the ground where they had stood, carving deep furrows and sending mud and stone flying. Ethan and Selene cut through a side street while Lirael drew several of the attacks after her with a bright flare of silver magic.

In the narrow alley, Aric’s voice still reached them, calm and almost conversational.

“You can’t outrun the story forever, Ethan Black. Your father tried. Look where it got him.”

The name hit harder than any blade. Ethan’s steps faltered for half a second. Rain poured down his face, mixing with something that felt dangerously close to tears. His father. The quiet man who had given him a worn paperback and told him stories taught people how to keep fighting. The man who had apparently lived this nightmare before him and tried to end the cycle.

“Don’t listen,” the System said sharply. “He’s trying to break your focus. The tannery is two streets over. Move.”

They burst into the open courtyard of the old tannery. The heavy wooden doors were already half-open. Inside, several hooded figures waited — Selene’s contacts. Relief flashed across her face for the first time that night, soft and human.

Then one of the hooded figures stepped forward and lowered his hood.

Ethan felt the blood drain from his face. He knew this man too. Another face from the original novel. Another traitor.

And his eyes glowed with the same starry darkness as Aric’s.

“Welcome to the real game,” the man said softly. “The Backer has been expecting you.”

Behind them, Aric’s laughter rose again as he entered the courtyard, cutting off their only escape route. The storm above the town twisted into a tighter, angrier vortex. Dark tendrils began descending toward the streets like the fingers of something ancient and hungry.

Selene’s blade came up. Lirael appeared at the far end of the courtyard, blood streaking her robes, staff still blazing with silver light. Her eyes met Ethan’s for a brief second — no longer pure hostility, but something more complicated.

Ethan gripped his dagger until his knuckles ached. The weight of his father’s final attempt rested on his shoulders like a second set of chains. He had been discarded once. Used up and thrown away. He refused to let this world do the same.

But as the two corrupted figures closed in and the Awakening’s power pressed down from above, a cold realisation settled in his chest.

The First Fracture had only just begun.

And he was already running out of places to hide.

The cabin felt too small for the weight of what had just been said.Rain tapped against the wooden roof in an uneven, restless rhythm. Outside, the hunting horns sounded again — closer this time, carried on the cold wind from the direction of the border town. Ethan stood just inside the doorway, dagger still raised, the leather grip slick against his palm. His left shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat. Selene had not lowered her blade. Lirael’s staff remained lit with a low silver glow that cast long, shifting shadows across the rough walls.Elara looked up at them without flinching. Dried blood marked the corner of her mouth. The heavy iron cuffs around her wrists glowed faintly with suppression runes that pulsed in time with her breathing. Her eyes, though clearly exhausted, were sharp and clear. There was no pleading in them. Only a quiet, weary recognition.“Her energy is unstable but not fully corrupted,” the System said inside Ethan’s mind. “S

The tunnel felt endless. Ethan ran with one hand pressed against the rough stone wall to keep his balance. The air was cold and damp, thick with the smell of wet earth, old roots, and the faint metallic scent of his own blood. Every step sent a dull, stubborn throb through his left shoulder where the shadow spear had struck. The System’s healing had stopped the bleeding and closed the worst of the wound, but the deep ache remained — a constant reminder that his body was still struggling to keep up with the night’s violence. His legs felt heavy, as if the ground itself were trying to pull him down. His lungs burned with every breath. Selene led the way, moving with quiet certainty even in the near-darkness. Her footsteps were almost silent. Lirael followed close behind Ethan, her staff dimmed to a soft silver glow that barely lit the path ahead. None of them spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their uneven footsteps, the distant roar o

Ethan stood with his back almost against the wall, dagger raised, chest heaving. Every breath scraped his throat raw. His left shoulder still burned from the earlier spear of shadow, the numbness only half-cleared by the System’s healing. Selene stood at his right, blade steady, rain running down her face in thin lines. Lirael was a few paces to the left, silver light still flickering weakly around her staff. Between them and any possible exit stood two corrupted figures — Aric Voss and the second man who had just lowered his hood. The second man’s face was familiar too. In the original novel he had been one of the lesser nobles who helped push Vesper toward his final destruction. Now his eyes glowed with

  • Chapter 8: The First Fracture

The herald’s dark tendrils lashed out like living whips, tearing through the ruins with terrifying ease. Ethan dove behind a crumbling pillar as one passed inches from his head, the freezing energy it left behind making the air itself feel brittle. His heart pounded so hard he could hear it over the storm’s roar.“Global Plot Event active,” the System said, its voice strained. “The Awakening is now aware of you, Ethan. Every major faction will feel the shift. Survival probability down to 0.04%. This is the world trying to force the story back on track by any means necessary.”Selene fought beside him, her blade a blur as she cut through tendrils that tried to ensnare her. Lirael, the silver-haired heroine, had joined the fray against the herald as well — her magic clashing with the dark energy in brilliant explosions of light and shadow. For the moment, their rivalry was forgotten in the face of this greater threat.“This thing shouldn’t exist yet!” Lirael shouted,

  • Chapter 7: Storm of Awakening

The dark storm churned across the sky like a living thing, purple lightning crackling within its swirling clouds. It moved faster than any natural weather, drawn toward them with unnatural purpose. Ethan’s legs burned as he ran beside Selene, the numbness from the Void Watcher’s curse still lingering in his arm like a cold shadow. Every step sent a fresh wave of exhaustion through him, but stopping meant death.“The Awakening is accelerating,” the System said, its voice tight with urgency. “That storm isn’t just weather. It’s looking for anomalies — for you. Survival probability down to 0.09%. We need to find shelter or break its tracking.”Selene glanced back, her silver hair whipping in the rising wind. “The border town is two hours away at this pace. We won’t make it if that storm catches us. There’s an old ruin half a mile east. It might give us temporary cover.”Ethan nodded, his mind racing. The revelation about his father’s book still weighed on him like a st
