The hired performers, sensing the tension rising in the room after being caught, began slipping out of the dining room one by one.
By the time they were gone, it was just Mei, Zeke, and Craig—alone. Craig didn't even notice their absence. His eyes were locked on Zeke. "How did you know?" Craig asked Zeke, his voice trembling slightly. Zeke scoffed. He slipped a hand in his pocket while wrinkling his nose. "Of course I'd know. Don't underestimate me, Craig. Your tricks might fool Mei, but they'll never work on me. You're busted." Craig clenched his fists, gritting his teeth bitterly. This loser had ruined all his carefully orchestrated plans. If Zeke hadn't butted in, everything would've worked out perfectly. However, Craig wasn't the type to back down in tight situations like this. He always finds a way to make a comeback. "Yeah, and so what if I tried to trick Mei?" Craig snapped like a dog. "Did you really think I wouldn't go any length for Mei? Despite what I've done, I stand corrected—you don't deserve her." Zeke narrowed his eyes. "It still pisses me off you're running your foul mouth even after being caught red-handed. I admire your guts." "Of course I'll run my mouth," Craig retorted, turning towards Mei. "If you think anyone would be sensible to invest $80 million in Zhao Dynasty during these hard times, then you're living in a dream world. I tricked you just to give you false hope because I intend to invest my own money into Zhao Dynasty." This was of course, another lie. Craig didn't have $80 million to invest in a sinking company. He'd go broke. Mei glared at him, her voice ringing out with frustration. "Craig, that's totally wrong. You manipulated me to leave my husband. Did you realize how messed up that is?" "It isn't messed up because I love you, Mei," Craig said stepping close to her, his tone softening. "Everything I've done up to this point, was done with good intentions. No matter how you look at it, Zeke can't be of any help to you." "Well, he won't lie to my face," she spat back, her voice trembling with anger. "And he wouldn't try to manipulate me for selfish purpose. You're a sick man, Craig. I regret ever coming here." "That makes two of us," Zeke muttered. "I'll leave you lovebirds alone. Enjoy your dinner." He turned sharply and strode towards the door. Mei's heart lurched the moment Zeke walked away. Without sparing Craig a second glance, she pursued Zeke, calling after him. "Zeke, wait! Don't go." Craig watched her go, his chest burning with jealousy. For a moment, he had been so close at owning Mei. "Shit!" He slammed his fist on the table, seething in rage. "If only that bastard hadn't intervened. He ruined everything." After a few seconds, a wide grin stretched across his face. "No... this is good," he straightened himself and adjusted his suit. "This is really good. Zeke will never forgive Mei for betraying him. They'll eventually get a divorce. And when the marriage falls apart, she'll come running back to me." * * * * Outside Craig's villa, Mei caught up to Zeke before he could reach the car. "Zeke, stop," she pleaded, standing between him and the car. "Craig tricked me. You can't possibly be mad at me for falling into his trap." "There's no excuse, Mei," Zeke snapped, his voice cracking like a whip. "You promised you wouldn't see him. And yet you broke your promise." "I had no choice," Mei muttered. "I thought he was being sincere with me. I thought if I came, I'd finally be able to save Zhao Dynasty." "Your desperation sickens me," Zeke said sharply, his nose wrinkling in disgust. "You could have had faith in me and do what I say. But no, you chose to drug me so that you could sneak out to be with Craig." "I'm sorry for drugging you and sneaking out," Mei said, her voice cracking. "Could you just forgive me for that?" Zeke took a step closer, his eyebrows knitted in a frown. "Mei, I forgive you for drugging and sneaking out on me. I would've taken you home, sat you down and talk about this." He paused, his hands clenched into fists. "But tell me—why? Why the hell did you humiliate me before all those people and Craig? You slapped me and chose that scumbag over me. How I'm I supposed to get over that?" Mei swallowed, a tight knot forming in her chest. She knew she messed up. There was no coming back from what she did to Zeke. The guilt ate her up from inside like a mealworm. "Zeke, I was conflicted," She whispered, her eyes restless. "It was a matter of choosing the better option." "And Craig was your better option?" Zeke asked. "No," she cried. "Hell no. He was never my first choice. But in that moment... his offer was too irresistible. I couldn't help myself. I thought—" "You know what this tells me?" Zeke cut her off sharply, his tone as cold as ice. "You thought I was worthless. You see me the same way everyone else does: a pauper. A useless husband you could trade away for big dollars." Mei reached out and grabbed his hand. Her eyes brimmed with tears. "Zeke, no. Please, I'm sorry. Give me a second chance. I promise it won't happen again." But Zeke pulled his hand away and stepped back, widening the distance between them. "I've had enough with your promises," He tossed her the keys to her Lexus IS300. "As far as I'm concerned, this marriage is over. You may go ahead and marry Craig." Mei felt something snap inside her. A cold realization settled in the pits of her stomach as she realized she had lost her husband. The only person who absolutely cared about her. Zeke turned his back on her and walked into the night, his hands buried in his pockets. Just then, a back sedan pulled up beside him. He climbed inside the passenger seat and shut the door. The sedan sped away, it's taillight fading into the darkness. Mei stood alone in the driveway, tears rolling down her face. For the first time in her life, she felt completely alone.Latest Chapter
Jessica's Question
The stunned silence was broken by the rapid, heavy footsteps of a man rushing through the crowd. He was impeccably dressed, with the sharp eyes of a seasoned dealer, and he made a beeline for Zeke."That stone! The Red Beryl!" he said urgently. "Young man, I must have it. Name your price. How much do you want for it?"All eyes were on Zeke. He had just been publicly vindicated. He could have claimed the glory, the profit, the stunned respect of everyone in the room. But Zeke knew that would be a fatal mistake. To outshine Jessica Baker, to claim a victory she saw as hers by right of ownership, would only attract more troubles for him. Instead, he gestured toward Jessica. "You misunderstand, sir. The stone is not mine to sell. This is my employer, Miss Jessica Baker. It was her keen eye and judgment that selected this stone. I merely handled the transaction. Any deal must be struck with her."The dealer's attention snapped to Jessica. The crowd's gaze followed.Jessica was struck
Fools
The jeweller gestured for Zeke to bring his rock to the cutting station. But just as Zeke stepped forward, a large man in an expensive suit cut him off, holding up a smooth black stone."Me first, son," the man boomed, his face flushed with excitement. "I'm on a roll today. I can feel it—this is the one!"Zeke didn't move. "Excuse me, sir. I was here first."The man turned in anger but the moment his eyes landed on the lumpy, mud-brown rock in Zeke's hands, he burst into a loud laughter."What the hell is that?" he guffawed, pointing at the rock. "It looks so ugly! Are you seriously gonna cut that thing?"Zeke narrowed his eyes. "Why not? Got a problem with that?"The man wiped an imaginary tear from his eye. "No, no problem. But what did you pay for it? Couldn't have been more than a hundred bucks."Before Zeke could answer, Jessica stepped up behind him, a vicious smile playing on her lips. She was delighted to see the mockery begin. "He paid $12,000 for it," she announced loudly
The Geode Pavilion
Jessica’s eyes snapped open, stretching on her bed as her fingers dug into the cool silk sheets. She glanced at the bedside clock and froze. It was far earlier than she had intended to rise. Her mind raced as she recalled the events of last night. There were no flaws. Not a single flaw from Zeke's service.Throughout the entire night, she had tried every tactic, every little annoyance, every petty demand she could think of to break Zeke. But he had anticipated them all. He met each request with flawless efficiency. This was unlike anything she had ever experienced. A knot of pure frustration tightened in her chest. She had to see him now, to confirm he was as ragged and broken as he should be.Still in her nightgown, she reached out for the bedside phone and summoned him.In an instant, the door opened and Zeke appeared as if he had been standing there all along. He had put on new fresh clothes and shoes. There wasn't a trace of fatigue on his face.“Morning, Miss Baker,” he said
The first day
As the first day unfolded, Zeke began to fully understand why Mei despises Jessica Baker. Jessica Baker made a lot of unpredictable demands. She made callous remarks, and gives off soo much arrogance it seemed to suck the very air from a room. Her standards were impossibly high, and her criticism were always instant and brutal. She was the kind of person who looked at a human being and saw either a tool or trash.Anyone else would have been reduced to a nervous wreck within hours of working for her.But not Zeke. The Elephant Ring on his finger exposed her patterns and granted him true clairvoyance. He could easily anticipate her needs and moods before she even moved her lips. This foresight saved him more times than he could count. The first instance happened while he was preparing her evening bath. The elephant ring gave him a flash of the future. He saw Jessica dipping a toe into the water, shrieking that it was too cold, then shrieking that it was too hot, then accusing him
The elephant ring
Zeke returned to their quiet house alone, heading straight for the master's bedroom. Mei was still at her father’s mansion, concluding the formalities with Jessica Baker. He had excused himself, claiming he needed to retrieve something before being formally introduced to his new, temporary employer.Zeke walked to the far wall of his closet and slide open the hidden panel, revealing the secret digital safe. He keyed in the code, and the door hissed open. His eyes ran over the Rings of Power he had secured. All eight of them. He reached in and carefully picked up the Elephant Ring. This was the second time he would actively use this ring, but the situation demanded it. If he was going to survive Jessica Baker, and win her over, he needed to be ready for anything she threw at him.He needed the wisdom, patience and foresight the Elephant Ring’s power grants. He slipped the ring onto his finger, then locked the safe. Turning, he left the house and walked back toward the main mansi
Zhao Long's offer
Mei exploded. “No! No way!” she shouted, her voice echoing through the hallway. “She can’t have my husband! Is she insane?”Zhao Long lifted both hands in an attempt to calm her. “Mei, I tried. I offered her the best servants in the family, all of them. But she refused. She said she only wants Zeke.”Mei’s jaw clenched so tightly the veins in her neck stood out.“Well, you can tell that snobbish bitch that she cannot have Zeke!” she snarled. “He is my husband, not a servant to be loaned out!”Zhao Long’s temper finally cracked.“Mei, it’s not that simple!” he snapped back. “You know Jessica better than I do. She is stubborn and entitled. If she wants something, she does not take ‘no’ for an answer. She will not stop until she gets it!”Zeke, who had been observing the exchange quietly, finally opened his mouth to speak. “Can I say something—”“No! Zeke, stay out of this,” Mei cut him off sharply without even looking at him. Then she turned on her father again, fire in her eyes. “I kno
