A Black Monday
A dispatch delivery truck pulled up at the front entrance of Zhao Dynasty Towers. Zeke tugged off his cap as he jumped down from the truck and ran as fast as his legs could carry him towards the ten-storey building. His father-in-law, Zhao Long, had called for a family emergency meeting. Zeke had a bad feeling it had something to do with the disaster that happened that afternoon. It was a Black Monday for everyone in UFC Republic. A daylight nightmare no one predicted.Just hours earlier, the nation's stock market suffered a catastrophic collapse, wiping out a staggering $100 billion in value. Zhao Dynasty's entire portfolio, share, bond, every last penny they own had been tied up in that market. In a matter of minutes, everything was gone. No one saw it coming. Millions of people lost their money.Zeke had just been wrapping up his delivering shift when his wife, Mei, called to inform him about the emergency meeting. He didn't like how she sounded on the phone. Her voice was cl
A second chance
It ached Zeke in the chest to see his lovely wife in this position, begging like a street beggar. "Mei," Zeke knelt beside her, resting his hand on her shoulder. "You don't have to do this. It's not necessary." "Let me be, Zeke," She said sharply. "I have to do this. Don't make this harder than it looks." Anna Zhao scoffed. "This is ridiculous. How the hell does she plan to raise $80 million back?" She turned to face Zhao Long. "She's a lost cause, dear. I say we banish her from the family." Zeke stiffened. Banishment from the House of Zhao was a cruel punishment. A banished member of the family would be kicked out of the family estate... Never to return. All family funding would be cut off immediately, and personal properties like cars, lands and jewelries would be seized until the punishment is lifted. "I second that, father," Jason said, stepping forward. "Our biggest mistake was giving Mei total control over the family's investment. I won't make the same mistake twice.
Zeke's secert
Zeke guided Mei's silver Lexus IS300 out of Zhao Dynasty Tower's underground parking lot. Being married to Mei, Zeke worked two jobs to prove his worth to the Zhao family. He had been a delivery man for Zhao Dynasty and his wife's private driver for three years. This made him useful to everyone since he had no academy qualifications for corporate office. Mei spoke, breaking the tension in the car. "We are selling the car, Zeke. We'll probably get $80,000 out of it. Before that, drop me off at home. I'm pawning all my jewelry." Zeke didn't like this. He glanced at her through the rear mirror. "You don't have to sell your stuff, Mei. If it's money you—" "We need the money, Zeke," Mei cut him off, her voice sharp. "If we don't sell what we have how can we survive? You do realize we don't own a penny right now." "I understand how you feel, but if it's money you need maybe I can lend you some," Zeke said softly. "I have a little savings in my account." "Oh please," Mei scoffed,

Zeke and Mei stood quietly, watching as the pawn broker appraised the pile of jewelry and accessories laid out before him. There were a collection of diamond necklaces, gold bangles, four luxury designer bags, designer sunglasses and two rose-gold watches on the counter. After several long minutes of appraisal, the pawn broker cleared his throat. "These are good pieces. If they were new, the total value would amount to $250,000. However, since I'm buying them from you at a second-hand price, I'm willing to pay $150,000 for the lot." Mei frowned. "A hundred and fifty grand? That's too poor. You said it yourself they're worth a quarter of a million. Make it $200,000." "$160,000. Final offer," the broker offered. "Take it or leave it. The stock market crashed today, ma'am. You're not the only rich girl who've come here this afternoon to pawn their valuables. No other pawnbroker would offer you full price in this crisis." Mei hesitated, biting her lips. She knew he was right, but $16

Mei spun towards Zeke, her eyes flashing with anger, "What's your problem, Zeke?" "What's my problem? What's his problem?" Zeke pointed at Craig. "This man has been stalking you for as long as I can remember, and suddenly he wants to discuss terms to help you? Sounds fishy to me." "And may I ask what are you doing to help your wife," Craig asked. "could you afford to restore the fortune Mei lost? Of course you can't. After all, you're nothing but a delivery man who got lucky marrying a damsel like Mei." Zeke clenched his fists. "We don't need your help, Craig. Get lost." "Zeke, shut up!" Mei snapped Zeke stiffened as her words hit him like a punch. Mei had never snapped at him like that before. "You're telling me to shut up?" Zeke asked. "Yes, shut up," She said sharply, her eyes flaring. "If you had even the slightest idea what I'm going through, you'll be a lot nicer to Craig." She paused as she turned to Craig, a faint smile curling her lips. "Pay no mind to my hu
The dinner meeting
An hour later, Mei was fully dressed in her finest clothes and jewelry. She had also gone through the trouble of doing her makeup. Tonight was very crucial. If she missed this opportunity, she might never get another. Satisfied with her make-up, she walked back to the living room where Zeke was sprawled on the couch, motionlessly. Earlier, she had dragged him all the way from the kitchen to the living room. By morning, he'll ask a lot of questions but if all went well tonight, it wouldn't really matter. Just then, a car horn honked outside. It was Craig's chauffeur. He had arrived to pick her up. Mei took one last glance at Zeke and muttered under her breath. "I'm sorry, Zeke.... I'll be back soon." Then she stepped out of the house, slipping into the backseat of Craig's Rolls-Royce phantom. The chauffeur closed the door after her, and rode the car away from the Zhao family's estate. * * * * Inside the chill quiet living room, Zeke's motionless body remained still on the couc

"Craig... I'm sorry. But I can't marry you," Mei said. A brief silence stretched between Craig and Mei. "I don't think you realize the position you're in, Mei," Craig said, his smile gone. "I have what you need to save your family's company. And yet you'd rather be with that church rat you call a husband?" "It's complicated," Mei responded, her eyes restless. "Zeke and I have been married for three years. Our marriage was arranged by my mother before she died. I can't divorce him. If I did, I would be betraying my mother's final wish." Craig clenched his jaws. "No offense to your mother, but face it, Mei. She's long dead. What good is holding on to a man who'll only draw you back? Be my wife, Mei. And I'll give you the world." Mei bite her lips bitterly. She didn't know what to do or say but her mind was already made up. "Zeke might be a pauper," She said at last. "But he's a good man. It took everything in me to be here tonight. Your offer is generous... but it's just isn't f
Fake
Mei's mind drifted back three years ago, to the day her mother first introduced her to Zeke. Initially, Mei was heavily against the arranged marriage between her and Zeke. She couldn't imagine how her mother expected her to marry a man like him. Zeke was a pauper. He only wore one pair of shoes and rotated the same two set of clothes every other day. Worse, he was a typical nobody. He had no formal education, no connections and no talents to his name. His only redeeming qualities was his kindness and unpolished good looks. But even those qualities weren't nearly enough to qualify him as a lifelong partner. But Mei's mother had insisted she gave him a chance. "Marry him, Mei. And have great faith in him. Zeke may not be the man you desire right now, but he'll be the man you'll need in the future. Don't give up on him." Those were Mei's mother's words. For three years Mei had honoured her mother's wish and even though she had grown to accept Zeke as her husband, she knew
Alone
The hired performers, sensing the tension rising in the room after being caught, began slipping out of the dining room one by one. By the time they were gone, it was just Mei, Zeke, and Craig—alone. Craig didn't even notice their absence. His eyes were locked on Zeke. "How did you know?" Craig asked Zeke, his voice trembling slightly. Zeke scoffed. He slipped a hand in his pocket while wrinkling his nose. "Of course I'd know. Don't underestimate me, Craig. Your tricks might fool Mei, but they'll never work on me. You're busted." Craig clenched his fists, gritting his teeth bitterly. This loser had ruined all his carefully orchestrated plans. If Zeke hadn't butted in, everything would've worked out perfectly. However, Craig wasn't the type to back down in tight situations like this. He always finds a way to make a comeback. "Yeah, and so what if I tried to trick Mei?" Craig snapped like a dog. "Did you really think I wouldn't go any length for Mei? Despite what I've done, I st
The Ten Rings Of Power
The Black sedan pulled up outside the Black Orchid hotel, the tallest and most expensive building in the city. This hotel was secretly owned by the Rockechilds family. "What are your next orders, young master?" Flynn asked him as he switched off the ignition. Zeke's expression was dark. He couldn't get tonight's bitter event out of his mind. "Have your men keep eyes on Mei. I want all reports on her sent to my phone everyday." "Understood," Flynn replied. "I'll have my men carry out surveillance on her day in and out." "Good," Zeke push open the door and stepped out. His steps felt heavy as he strode through the revolving door towards the grand receptionist desk. "Welcome, young master," The receptionist, a well dressed woman bowed as he approached. "We were informed of your arrival. Your penthouse suite has been kept in order. Would you like to be served dinner in your room?" "I would prefer not to be disturbed," Zeke dismissed her with a wave of his hand before heading t
