But the chief’s face twisted in rage. "Silence!" His roar silenced the entire hall.

"This family has broken too many of East District’s rules. They deserve to be punished!" The chief said as his eyes burned with fury.

His glare swept over the crowd. "If any of you dare to speak for them again, you will share their fate!"

The hall fell into an eerie stillness. The people who had spoken up immediately took a step back, fear gripping them.

Catherine clicked her tongue in irritation. "These peasants are so annoying." She turned her cold gaze back to Lance. "You claim to have fought in the army for years, but you're nothing but a coward and a deserter."

She sneered, eyes filled with contempt. "You couldn’t fend for yourself out there, could you? That’s why you crawled back here, trying to act like some big shot. Maybe to scam people for money?"

Lance’s eyes darkened. "Is money the only thing you care about?"

    The entire hall watched; some were too stunned to even breathe. Lance’s icy gaze swept over the trembling Nathaniel and Catherine, who was brimming with anger. Pathetic.
