His mother's hands were on his arm, her voice soft and pleading, but the anger burning through him was a living thing, coiled tight in his chest like a serpent that had finally been given permission to strike. His grip on Diane Harrington's throat remained iron-solid, his fingers pressed into the soft flesh just beneath her jaw, and he could feel her pulse hammering against his palm like a trapped bird beating its wings against a cage.
