The dawn didn’t break over the city; it merely bled a sickly, diluted grey across the jagged horizon of the ruins. Mikhail sat in the back of the transport truck, his fingers tightly gripped around the edges of the metal bench. Beside him, Diego was checking the load of his weapon, his expression as unreadable as the concrete slabs passing by outside.

"You look like you’re about to lose your breakfast, kid," Diego said, his voice barely rising above the low rumble of the engine.

Mikhail swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I’m not losing it. I’m just reconsidering my life choices. Why am I doing this again?"

"Because you want to eat more than just scavenged peaches, and because you’re tired of running," Diego replied, not looking up. "Focus. We’re two minutes out. The air is going to start smelling like burning plastic soon. That’s the Spitter."

"Burning plastic?" Mikhail asked, his pulse quickening.

"Acid," Diego said grimly. "It eats through everything, including steel. Don't touch anything that looks like it’s been leaking. Don’t lean on walls. Don’t even breathe too deep if the mist gets thick."

Mikhail nodded, his heart hammering against his ribs. He felt the familiar, cold tickle at the back of his eyes—the 'gift' waking up, hungry for data. "I’m ready. I think."

"You better be," Diego said, signaling for the driver to stop. "We go in on foot. Miller, Rojas, you’re on the perimeter. Mikhail, you stick to my hip. You see the stress, you point it out. If I tell you to jump, you don't ask why—you just jump."

The doors hissed open. The smell hit Mikhail like a physical blow—acrid, stinging, and sharp enough to make his eyes water. They stepped out into the desolation of the plaza. The buildings here were husks, skeletons of a dead age, their windows blown out and their foundations weeping dark, viscous streaks of corrosion.

"Keep your heads low," Diego whispered, waving the team forward. "Mikhail, what do you see?"

Mikhail blinked, letting the blue shift take over. The world fractured into light. The ground became a map of instability; the concrete, weakened by the constant dripping of acidic slime, glowed with a faint, pulsing violet rot.

"The ground is a minefield," Mikhail whispered, his voice shaking. "Don't step near the cracks. The entire floor level is hollowed out underneath. If you put too much weight on these spots, the whole square drops ten feet."

"Good catch," Diego muttered. "Where is the target?"

Mikhail scanned the horizon. His eyes moved through the structural stress, past the brittle walls, and landed on a massive, hulking shape crouched atop a collapsed bank lobby. It wasn't just a monster. It was a boiling mass of chemical instability. Its veins glowed with that same toxic, caustic purple he saw on the ground.

"There," Mikhail pointed with a trembling finger. "It’s on top of the bank. It’s waiting."

"I don't see anything," Diego said, his rifle trained on the lobby.

"It’s camouflaged against the rust," Mikhail said. "Look at the way the light hits the debris. That’s not a shadow. That’s a living thing."

Suddenly, a wet, sizzling sound tore through the air. A glob of viscous, glowing liquid arched through the sky, slamming into the ground five feet from their position. The asphalt hissed and bubbled instantly, releasing a plume of choking, yellow smoke.

"Contact!" Diego roared, shoving Mikhail behind a concrete pillar. "Spread out!"

"It’s not just one shot!" Mikhail yelled, pulling his head back as a second volley of acid hit the pillar, sending shards of stone showering down on them. "It’s adjusting! It knows where we are!"

"Miller! Suppression fire on the lobby entrance!" Diego shouted into his comms. "Mikhail, I can't hit it through the debris! Where is it weak? Give me something!"

Mikhail squeezed his eyes shut, forcing his focus to pierce the creature's defenses. The world slowed. The Spitter’s form became a blueprint of lethal design. He saw the thick, armored plates on its back, the corded muscle of its legs, and then, nestled deep beneath the cartilage of its chest, a pulsating, vibrant, glowing gland.

"The chest!" Mikhail screamed over the roar of the gunfire. "There’s a membrane under the ribcage! It’s storing the acid there! You hit that, and you don't just hurt it—you end it!"

"That’s a hell of a small target!" Diego shouted, popping up to fire a burst.

"It’s the only one that works!" Mikhail yelled back. "Wait for it to spray! When it opens its maw to discharge, the chest cavity expands! That’s when the gland is exposed!"

"You heard him!" Diego yelled to his team. "Wait for the spray! Then dump everything you’ve got!"

The Spitter shrieked—a sound like metal grinding on wet stone—and leaped from the bank, landing in the center of the plaza with a thud that shook the foundations. It reared back, its maw opening wide to reveal a glowing, pressurized sac of bubbling acid.

"Now!" Diego shouted.

The squad opened fire. Bullets chewed through the creature’s hide, sparks flying as they ricocheted off its armor. The Spitter hissed, the acid in its mouth bubbling over, but it didn't collapse.

"It’s not enough!" Miller cried out. "It’s too thick!"

"Aim for the center!" Mikhail stood up from behind the pillar, his eyes locked on the glowing, fragile point. "Diego, the left side of the membrane! It’s already bruised from your last shot!"

Diego didn't hesitate. He shifted his aim, focusing his rifle on the exact spot Mikhail had marked. He squeezed the trigger, letting out a controlled, rhythmic burst.

The bullets punched through the creature's chest wall. For a heartbeat, the Spitter froze, its glowing gland beginning to rupture.

"It’s going to blow!" Mikhail yelled, grabbing Diego by the vest and dragging him backward. "Move!"

They scrambled behind the wreckage of a burned-out bus just as the Spitter collapsed. The internal pressure triggered a violent, chain-reaction explosion. A spray of superheated, corrosive acid erupted in all directions, coating the plaza in a sizzling rain.

The sound was deafening, a wet, sickening pop followed by the screech of metal melting under the onslaught.

Mikhail kept his head down, his pulse racing, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The rain of acid hissed against the bus, the roof beginning to sag and smoke under the heat.

"Is everyone okay?" Diego shouted, his voice hoarse.

"I’m clear!" Miller called out.

"Rojas is down!" a voice shouted back. "I think he took some splash! My suit is burning!"

Diego scrambled to the edge of the bus, looking out at the smoking, bubbling crater that had once been the creature. He looked back at Mikhail, his face smeared with grime and sweat, a look of grim shock on his features.

"That was a one-in-a-million shot, kid," Diego said, his chest heaving.

Mikhail looked at his hands. They weren't shaking anymore. He looked out at the plaza, seeing the aftermath of the explosion—the way the ground was still bubbling, the way the world looked so fragile, so temporary.

"Don't thank me yet," Mikhail muttered, staring at the spreading pool of acid. "We’ve got a bigger problem."

"What are you talking about?" Diego asked, his grip tightening on his rifle.

Mikhail pointed to the ground beneath their feet. The violet, glowing stress lines were expanding, spreading rapidly from the center of the crater toward the bus.

"The acid," Mikhail whispered, horror dawning on him. "It’s eating through the foundation of the entire plaza. And we’re standing on the thinnest part."

The ground beneath them gave a deep, terrifying groan, and the world began to tilt.

The tunnel groaned, a deep, rhythmic vibration that Mikhail felt in his teeth. Dust cascaded from the jagged ceiling like grey confetti, settling into the open wounds on his arms. Behind them, the sounds of the command center’s final moments weren't just explosions anymore; they were the screams of dying architecture."How much further, Mikhail?" Diego panted, his hand white-knuckled around the rugged data drive he’d snatched from the console."The tunnel is narrowing!" Mikhail shouted back, his vision swimming with pulsating blue maps of stress and imminent collapse. "If we don't find a wider space, the cave-in is going to catch us like a rat in a pipe!""I’m moving as fast as I can!" Miller yelled from the front, his heavy tactical boots clattering against the loose slate. "Rojas is losing a lot of blood! We need to stop!""If we stop, we stay here forever!" Diego roared, shifting Rojas’s dead weight on his shoulder. "Mikhail, give me a way out! Now!"Mikhail slammed his palm agains

The sterile, recycled air inside the command center hit Mikhail’s lungs like a clean blade, sharp and biting compared to the fetid rot of the city above. He took a hesitant step forward, his boots making a soft, unnatural squeak on the polished polymer flooring. It was so quiet that the humming of the climate control fans sounded like a jet engine."This place is too clean," Diego said, his rifle held at the low ready. He turned his head, his eyes scanning the banks of flickering monitors. "It’s like they just stood up and left five minutes ago.""Or they were never allowed to leave," Mikhail muttered. He moved toward a central desk, his fingers hovering over the cold glass of a terminal. "Look at the dust patterns, Diego. Nothing has been touched in decades, yet the power is still pulling from the geothermal core. This wasn't an evacuation. It was a shutdown.""Miller, Rojas, take the hallway to the left," Diego ordered, pointing his flashlight toward the shadows. "I want eyes on eve

The metallic shrieking on the other side of the blast door was no longer just a sound; it was a rhythmic assault, a cacophony of bone hitting steel that vibrated through the very soles of Mikhail’s boots. Each impact felt like a hammer blow against his sanity."How are we doing with that lock, Mikhail?" Diego shouted, his voice tight with an urgency that bordered on desperation. He leaned his shoulder into the heavy frame, his tactical vest straining against the immense pressure of the barrier.Mikhail didn't look back. His eyes were wide, the familiar, terrifying blue glow of his 'gift' saturating his vision. The world around him wasn't a hallway anymore; it was a web of stress, decay, and failing physics. "It’s not just a lock, Diego! The whole damn frame is warped! The blast door shifted when the building groaned earlier—it’s binding against the threshold!""I don't care if it's binding against the ghost of the architect!" Miller grunted, his rifle muzzle pressed uselessly against

The sound of the bin clattering against the station floor felt like a gunshot in a library. Silence held for a heartbeat, agonizing and absolute, before the station erupted into a cacophony of wet, rhythmic shrieks."They’re moving!" Miller yelled, his rifle spitting flame into the gloom."Form up! Don't let them flank us!" Diego barked, his voice steady even as he kicked a charging creature back with his boot. "Mikhail, eyes up! What are you seeing?"Mikhail was hyperventilating, the world spinning in shades of grey and neon blue. His 'gift' was screaming, highlighting the incoming swarm with glowing, pulsating markers."They’re coming from the tracks!" Mikhail shouted, ducking as a spindly, clawed hand swiped through the space where his head had been a second ago. "Diego, the tops of their heads! There’s a soft, translucent bulb buried in the bone! That’s how they're navigating in the dark!"Diego ducked a swipe, his rifle bucking against his shoulder. "The sensory stalks? You’re su

The beam of Diego’s flashlight cut through the stagnant air like a dull blade, revealing a cavernous, subterranean hall choked with dust and forgotten history. Mikhail kept his back pressed against the cold, damp tiles of the station wall, his breath hitching in his chest. Every shadow looked like a threat, every draft of air felt like a warning."Stay close," Diego whispered, his voice barely a breath. "Mikhail, what do you see? Can we cross this?"Mikhail shut his eyes, forcing his ‘gift’ to bloom. The world shifted. The darkness didn’t just vanish; it transformed into a complex topography of structural stress and potential collapse. He peered toward the tracks, his vision tracing the faint, glowing webs of decay that marked the platform."It’s not just the structure," Mikhail murmured, his eyes snapping open. "There are shapes, Diego. Over there, near the rusted turnstiles. They aren't moving, but they’re… breathing.""Sleepers," Miller whispered, his hand tightening on his rifle.

The world tilted, a sickening lurch that sent Mikhail sprawling against the charred metal wall of the bus. Outside, the ground—no longer solid earth but a decaying, acid-saturated sponge—began to collapse in a jagged geometric tear."Get out! Move, move, move!" Diego roared, his voice cracking with the exertion of hauling the wounded Rojas toward the edge of the crater."The bus is sinking!" Miller yelled, his boots scraping frantically against the asphalt as the rear wheels vanished into a dark, steaming fissure.Mikhail scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs like a panicked trapped bird. He didn't look at the sky or the horizon; he looked at the ground. To him, the earth was a map of neon-blue fissures, the structural integrity of the entire plaza dropping to zero in real-time."Don't go that way!" Mikhail screamed, pointing toward the crumbling bank lobby. "The load-bearing wall is liquefying! Use the alleyway between the shop fronts! It’s the only path that ha
