The world tilted, a sickening lurch that sent Mikhail sprawling against the charred metal wall of the bus. Outside, the ground—no longer solid earth but a decaying, acid-saturated sponge—began to collapse in a jagged geometric tear.

"Get out! Move, move, move!" Diego roared, his voice cracking with the exertion of hauling the wounded Rojas toward the edge of the crater.

"The bus is sinking!" Miller yelled, his boots scraping frantically against the asphalt as the rear wheels vanished into a dark, steaming fissure.

Mikhail scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs like a panicked trapped bird. He didn't look at the sky or the horizon; he looked at the ground. To him, the earth was a map of neon-blue fissures, the structural integrity of the entire plaza dropping to zero in real-time.

"Don't go that way!" Mikhail screamed, pointing toward the crumbling bank lobby. "The load-bearing wall is liquefying! Use the alleyway between the shop fronts! It’s the only path that hasn't been eaten through yet!"

Diego didn't argue. He shifted his grip on Rojas, hauling the man over his shoulder with a grunt of pain. "You heard him! Alleyway! Miller, cover our six!"

They sprinted, the sound of the plaza imploding behind them like a giant gargling on gravel. Mikhail led, his eyes darting from shadow to stone, every step a calculated gamble on where the concrete would hold his weight for just one more second.

"How much further?" Diego gasped, his breath hitching as he shifted the weight of the wounded man.

"Just past the butcher shop!" Mikhail called back, his lungs burning with the acrid, chemical-tainted air. "Wait—Diego, stop!"

Mikhail threw his arm out, forcing the team to skid to a halt. A pool of bubbling, iridescent sludge blocked their path, the acid slowly gnawing through a storm drain grate.

"We’re trapped?" Miller hissed, leveling his rifle at the darkness of the alley.

"No," Mikhail said, his eyes scanning the rusted fire escape ladder hanging ten feet above them. "The metal on that ladder is reinforced. The acid hasn't touched it. We need to reach it. Now."

"Rojas is dead weight," Diego grunted, wiping sweat and grit from his eyes. "Miller, help me boost him up. Mikhail, you’re the lightest. Go first and pull him up."

Mikhail didn't hesitate. He leaped, his fingers catching the cold, biting iron of the ladder. He hoisted himself up, his muscles screaming, and reached back down. "Grab his arms! I’ve got him!"

The process was a desperate, sweating blur of grunts and strained tendons. They hauled Rojas onto the metal platform, then pulled Miller and Diego up just as the alley floor gave a final, mournful groan and vanished into the pit below.

They collapsed on the iron grate, gasping for air. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the rhythmic dripping of acid somewhere deep in the dark.

"Is he still breathing?" Mikhail asked, crawling over to where Rojas lay.

Diego knelt, his hands moving with professional, shaky speed to pull back the shredded tactical gear on Rojas’s shoulder. "He’s breathing. But the splash burned deep. He’s going to need a hell of a lot more than field dressings."

"I have some sterile water and a clean cloth in my pack," Mikhail said, fumbling with his own meager supplies. "It’s not much, but it’ll wash out the residual sludge."

"Do it," Diego ordered, his tone softening only slightly. "Mikhail, you saved us back there. I didn't think we were getting out of that plaza."

Mikhail dabbed the wet cloth onto the man's searing skin, his hands steady despite the adrenaline crash. "I just looked at the architecture, Diego. The building did all the heavy lifting."

"Don't sell yourself short, kid," Miller chimed in, leaning against the brick wall with his rifle across his lap. "You’ve got a hell of a knack for finding the path of least misery."

"That’s one way to put it," Mikhail muttered, his gaze drifting to the dark, soot-stained windows of the building they were now clinging to.

Suddenly, a faint, rhythmic clicking sound drifted up from the pit they had just escaped.

"Did you hear that?" Diego stood up, his rifle raised in an instant.

"It’s the swarm," Mikhail said, his blood turning cold. "The explosion... the acid... the smell of the blood. It’s like a dinner bell for everything in a three-block radius."

"How many?" Diego asked, his eyes scanning the darkness below.

Mikhail closed his eyes, forcing his 'gift' to pulse. The world shifted. The darkness beneath them turned into a hive of glowing, pulsating orange nodes. They were everywhere. Crawling up the walls, emerging from the sewers, drawn by the chemical reaction.

"Too many," Mikhail whispered, his voice trembling. "They’re massing at the base of the fire escape. If we stay here, we’re cornered."

"We can’t go back down," Miller noted, checking his magazine. "We’re out of options."

"There’s a transit line," Mikhail said, pointing toward the rooftop across the alley. "The maintenance hatch for the Old District tunnel system. It’s reinforced steel. If we can cross the gap, we can lock the hatch from the inside."

"The gap is fifteen feet," Diego said, looking at the distance. "With Rojas hurt, we can't jump that."

"We don't need to jump," Mikhail said, his eyes locking onto a loose tension cable running from the building they were on to the one across the alley. "That cable is rusted, but it’s anchored to the central beam. If we swing across, the momentum will carry us to the roof access."

"You’re asking us to play acrobat while we’re being hunted?" Diego gave a dry, humorless laugh. "I’ve had better Friday nights."

"You have a better idea?" Mikhail challenged, his eyes glowing with that faint, unsettling blue.

Diego looked at the swarm of hungry, clicking shapes beginning to spill into the alley below. He sighed, a jagged sound of resignation. "Fine. Miller, you go first. Then Rojas. Mikhail, you’re behind him. I’ll take the rear."

"Move fast," Mikhail urged. "The anchor point on this building is failing. We have exactly thirty seconds before this whole balcony tears off the wall."

Miller didn't hesitate. He leapt, catching the wire with a metallic slide that showered sparks into the alley below. He landed on the opposite roof with a heavy thud, immediately turning back to offer a hand.

"Okay, kid, your turn," Diego said, signaling to Rojas. "Easy now. Don't look down."

They moved with the desperate, jagged precision of the doomed. Mikhail watched the stress points on the balcony beneath them bloom into a terrifying, bright red.

"Diego, now!" Mikhail yelled, feeling the iron grate beneath his feet begin to buckle.

Diego didn't wait. He launched himself at the wire, his tactical vest scraping against the steel. He hit the rooftop hard, turning to help Miller drag Rojas the rest of the way.

Mikhail took a breath, the world around him vibrating with the imminent collapse of the structure. He jumped. The cable hummed, a high-pitched, terrifying vibration, and he felt the weight of the air beneath him before he slammed onto the cold, gritty tar of the roof.

He hadn't even finished rolling when the balcony they had been standing on sheared away from the brickwork, plummeting into the alley with a sound like a bomb going off.

"Go! Get to the hatch!" Diego barked, pointing toward a heavy, circular steel door embedded in the rooftop concrete.

They scrambled toward it, their boots clattering on the tar. Mikhail reached the wheel, his hands raw and bleeding, and shoved his shoulder into it. It wouldn't budge.

"It’s rusted shut!" Mikhail groaned, panic clawing at his throat.

"Miller, help him!" Diego ordered, his rifle aimed toward the edge of the roof as the first of the Runners began to scale the brickwork.

"I see the problem," Mikhail shouted, his vision clearing the rust and grime to reveal the locking mechanism. "The internal pin is jammed on the left! If we put equal pressure on the hinge and the wheel simultaneously, it’ll pop!"

"Do it!"

Mikhail jammed his crowbar into the gap, leveraging the steel, while Miller braced his back against the wheel and pushed with everything he had. With a screech that sounded like a dying animal, the seal broke. The door swung inward, revealing a cool, dark, and smelling-of-stagnant-air tunnel.

"Inside! Now!"

They dived into the dark, Miller slamming the hatch shut just as a set of clawed hands raked across the metal. He threw the bolt, the heavy thud echoing through the tunnel like a tombstone dropping into place.

They sat in the dark for a moment, the only sound the ragged, collective breathing of the four men.

"We’re in," Mikhail whispered, his heartbeat finally starting to slow.

"Yeah," Diego said, his voice echoing in the confined space. "We’re in. And I think we’re safe, for now."

Mikhail leaned his head back against the cold, damp concrete of the wall. He closed his eyes, the blue light finally fading, leaving him in total, blissful darkness.

"I told you," Mikhail said, a small, tired smirk touching his lips. "I find the paths."

"Don't get cocky, kid," Diego said, though there was a hint of genuine respect in his voice. "We still need to find a way back to the bunker. And it sounds like this tunnel goes a long, long way."

Mikhail listened. Below them, somewhere deep in the bowels of the city, he could hear the distant hum of ventilation fans.

"It’s not just a tunnel," Mikhail whispered. "It’s a station. A fortified one."

Diego turned his flashlight on, the beam cutting through the gloom to reveal a set of heavy, blast-proof doors at the end of the corridor, emblazoned with the faint, fading logo of a long-dead government transit agency.

"Then let’s see what kind of guests they left behind," Diego said, standing up and checking his rifle. "Ready, scout?"

Mikhail stood, his legs trembling but his mind clear. He looked at the door. He didn't see the metal. He saw the integrity, the way the lock held, and the path forward.

"Ready," Mikhail said. "But seriously, if there’s no coffee in there, I’m holding a strike."

The tunnel groaned, a deep, rhythmic vibration that Mikhail felt in his teeth. Dust cascaded from the jagged ceiling like grey confetti, settling into the open wounds on his arms. Behind them, the sounds of the command center’s final moments weren't just explosions anymore; they were the screams of dying architecture."How much further, Mikhail?" Diego panted, his hand white-knuckled around the rugged data drive he’d snatched from the console."The tunnel is narrowing!" Mikhail shouted back, his vision swimming with pulsating blue maps of stress and imminent collapse. "If we don't find a wider space, the cave-in is going to catch us like a rat in a pipe!""I’m moving as fast as I can!" Miller yelled from the front, his heavy tactical boots clattering against the loose slate. "Rojas is losing a lot of blood! We need to stop!""If we stop, we stay here forever!" Diego roared, shifting Rojas’s dead weight on his shoulder. "Mikhail, give me a way out! Now!"Mikhail slammed his palm agains

The sterile, recycled air inside the command center hit Mikhail’s lungs like a clean blade, sharp and biting compared to the fetid rot of the city above. He took a hesitant step forward, his boots making a soft, unnatural squeak on the polished polymer flooring. It was so quiet that the humming of the climate control fans sounded like a jet engine."This place is too clean," Diego said, his rifle held at the low ready. He turned his head, his eyes scanning the banks of flickering monitors. "It’s like they just stood up and left five minutes ago.""Or they were never allowed to leave," Mikhail muttered. He moved toward a central desk, his fingers hovering over the cold glass of a terminal. "Look at the dust patterns, Diego. Nothing has been touched in decades, yet the power is still pulling from the geothermal core. This wasn't an evacuation. It was a shutdown.""Miller, Rojas, take the hallway to the left," Diego ordered, pointing his flashlight toward the shadows. "I want eyes on eve

The metallic shrieking on the other side of the blast door was no longer just a sound; it was a rhythmic assault, a cacophony of bone hitting steel that vibrated through the very soles of Mikhail’s boots. Each impact felt like a hammer blow against his sanity."How are we doing with that lock, Mikhail?" Diego shouted, his voice tight with an urgency that bordered on desperation. He leaned his shoulder into the heavy frame, his tactical vest straining against the immense pressure of the barrier.Mikhail didn't look back. His eyes were wide, the familiar, terrifying blue glow of his 'gift' saturating his vision. The world around him wasn't a hallway anymore; it was a web of stress, decay, and failing physics. "It’s not just a lock, Diego! The whole damn frame is warped! The blast door shifted when the building groaned earlier—it’s binding against the threshold!""I don't care if it's binding against the ghost of the architect!" Miller grunted, his rifle muzzle pressed uselessly against

The sound of the bin clattering against the station floor felt like a gunshot in a library. Silence held for a heartbeat, agonizing and absolute, before the station erupted into a cacophony of wet, rhythmic shrieks."They’re moving!" Miller yelled, his rifle spitting flame into the gloom."Form up! Don't let them flank us!" Diego barked, his voice steady even as he kicked a charging creature back with his boot. "Mikhail, eyes up! What are you seeing?"Mikhail was hyperventilating, the world spinning in shades of grey and neon blue. His 'gift' was screaming, highlighting the incoming swarm with glowing, pulsating markers."They’re coming from the tracks!" Mikhail shouted, ducking as a spindly, clawed hand swiped through the space where his head had been a second ago. "Diego, the tops of their heads! There’s a soft, translucent bulb buried in the bone! That’s how they're navigating in the dark!"Diego ducked a swipe, his rifle bucking against his shoulder. "The sensory stalks? You’re su

The beam of Diego’s flashlight cut through the stagnant air like a dull blade, revealing a cavernous, subterranean hall choked with dust and forgotten history. Mikhail kept his back pressed against the cold, damp tiles of the station wall, his breath hitching in his chest. Every shadow looked like a threat, every draft of air felt like a warning."Stay close," Diego whispered, his voice barely a breath. "Mikhail, what do you see? Can we cross this?"Mikhail shut his eyes, forcing his ‘gift’ to bloom. The world shifted. The darkness didn’t just vanish; it transformed into a complex topography of structural stress and potential collapse. He peered toward the tracks, his vision tracing the faint, glowing webs of decay that marked the platform."It’s not just the structure," Mikhail murmured, his eyes snapping open. "There are shapes, Diego. Over there, near the rusted turnstiles. They aren't moving, but they’re… breathing.""Sleepers," Miller whispered, his hand tightening on his rifle.
