Mara Holt
It took Toby six hours to find her.She was a thin, tired woman in her early thirties, with a faded cardigan and a boy of seven asleep in her lap. They had come in on Tuesday, with the first wave of freed. She had given her name at the door, said she had no one, and spent the last two days helping in the kitchen. She was quiet. She was good with the little ones. Nobody had thought twice about her."She's been going out at night," said Toby, crouched on the roof beside me. "I followed her. She goes to the alley behind the laundromat and leaves a note under a brick. In the morning the brick's gone.""Who picks it up?""Some guy in a green coat. One of Hale's." He rubbed his nose. "I could grab him.""No. Let me talk to her."I found her in the infirmary corner, sitting on the floor beside the boy's cot with her hand on his hair. She looked up as I approached, and I saw that she already knew."I wondered when," she said."Mrs. Holt.""Mara." Her voice was steady and very quiet. "I'll tel
The Man Who Agreed
I expected a monster. What I got was a tall, easy man in a charcoal overcoat, with a good haircut and a warm, open face.Victor Hale stood at the barricade at six in the morning with his hands in plain view and a white handkerchief tied to a stick over one shoulder. Behind him, forty men waited in a loose, courteous half-circle. They had not brought weapons into the street. They held thermoses instead, and paper bags."Mr. Cole." He smiled at me. It was a lovely smile, the smile of a man who has never once been told no. "Forgive the hour. I hoped we could talk before the day got complicated. I brought pastries.""We don't need pastries.""No one ever needs them. That's what makes them a gift." He lifted a bag. "Almond croissants. A bakery on Fifty-Seventh was still lit. I thought you might have been up all night."I took the bag. It was warm. I handed it to Dale, who looked at it with deep suspicion."You'll come in," I said. "You and three others. The rest wait outside.""Of course."
The Prisoner
I went to see Dray at midnight. He had been moved to a storeroom at the back of the hall, a narrow concrete room with a cot and a bucket and a single bulb on a wire. Marcus had put two men outside the door. They were Dray's own, which struck me as either very trusting or very foolish. They let me in without a word.Dray sat on the cot with his back against the wall. The Quiet Rope held his wrists, soft as a ribbon. The gauze on his left hand had begun to yellow. In the weak light, he looked small."Ethan." He did not stand. "Do come in. Mind the bucket.""I want everything you know about the six.""Of course you do." He smiled. "I've been preparing. I thought I'd give you a list.""Go on.""Serena Okafor-Lind." He raised one finger. "A trauma surgeon at Bellevue. Late forties, Nigerian by birth, brilliant, ruthless, and honest in a way that's almost impossible to bear. Her Crown is called Mending, and it does exactly what you'd expect. She can close any wound. The cost is that someone
Ashfall
We held the first council that night, in the cellar, because it was the only room with a door that closed.Nine of us sat around the long white table where Walter had once poured tea. Marcus took the head, because nobody else would. Lena sat at my right with the notebook open. Ruth and Gil sat across, then Priya with a half-eaten sandwich, then Toby, who had been given a seat out of pity and who kept swinging his legs. Iris took the far end, quiet and straight. Dale sat by the door in case anyone wanted coffee.Behind the lid in the floor, Walter slept in his chair. We could feel him, a faint warm presence in the stone, like a sleeper in the next room."We're not a squad," said Lena. "We stopped being one on Monday. We're six hundred and seventy-two people and we need a name.""Why?" said Marcus."Because the System wants one."She was right. A pale window had hovered at the edge of my vision since noon.[Faction registration available.][Name your faction:]I had been ignoring it for

Dray lay in the water and looked at the sky, which had become a ceiling. The dome was perfectly clear. It rose from the rivers on either side of the island and closed overhead in one smooth pale curve, and through it the dawn looked like a photograph held up to a window. Every few seconds a thin ripple of light ran across it, as if something enormous were breathing on the other side."Six," I said. "Who?""Not here." Dray's voice was a thread. "I can't talk in the street. I'd like to lie down somewhere dry. I'm told I'm quite ill.""You'll live.""I'm so pleased."Marcus waded out beside me with his rifle at his shoulder. His eyes were on the trucks. "Sir," he said quietly, "there are sixty armed men on the other side of that water, and they're all looking at us.""I know.""I'd like to know what they're thinking.""So would I."I walked toward the lead truck. The men on the roof watched me come. None of them raised a weapon. A lean, graying man in a plate carrier slid down from the c
Dawn
The trucks came down Tenth Avenue at walking pace.Six black armored vehicles, no plates, in a long line, their headlights burning through the mist that rose off the water. Dray's men rode on the roofs with rifles raised. The lead truck reached the edge of the flooded street and stopped. For a moment there was only the sound of idling engines. The passenger door opened. A tall man in a camel coat stepped down onto the wet pavement. He looked at the street, at the long sheet of dark water stretching away toward the hall, and then, slowly, he smiled."Oh, that's clever," said Kasimir Dray. His voice carried perfectly in the still air. "That's really very good.""Dray!" I called from the barricade."Mr. Cole. I hope you slept." He raised a hand in greeting. "I'm sorry to say I didn't. I've had a difficult night. I thought we might settle this quickly, in the name of mutual courtesy.""There's nothing to settle.""You can hand over the nominee.""The seat is being claimed."For the first
