The echo of his sister’s name still vibrated in the marrow of his bones. Lorenzo stood frozen, the jagged piece of scrap metal held like a shiv, his chest rising and falling in rhythmic, measured gasps.

"Who's there?" Lorenzo called out, his voice cracking slightly. "I know you're watching. Show yourself!"

Silence was his only reply. The wind sighed through the hollowed-out ribs of a high-rise, carrying the metallic tang of ozone and dust. Lorenzo wiped his forehead with the back of his hand, ignoring the way his new, enhanced strength made his grip on the metal rod feel almost too firm.

"Great. I’m hearing ghosts now," he muttered to himself, stepping out from the alleyway wall. "Either the system is messing with my head, or this city has decided to gaslight me into a grave."

He began to move, keeping his steps light and his eyes scanning the periphery. He needed water. The euphoria of the level-up was already beginning to fade, leaving a nagging, dry itch in his throat that reminded him he was still a biological machine running on empty.

"Stay focused, Ren," he whispered. "The system gave you a boost. Use it."

He ducked behind a row of burnt-out sedans, his movements surprisingly fluid. Every time his boots crunched on glass, he winced, waiting for a predator to jump out of the shadows.

"Hey, you!"

The voice came from behind a pile of rubble near a collapsed pharmacy. It was strained, breathless. Lorenzo ducked low, his heart hammering against his ribs. He peeked over the hood of a rusted Toyota.

A man was pinned under a fallen concrete slab, his legs twisted at an unnatural angle. A few yards away, a hunched, shifting shadow—something that looked like a malformed canine, its skin raw and pulsing with a sickly violet glow—was sniffing the air, inching closer to the victim.

"Don't move," Lorenzo hissed, though he knew the man couldn't hear him.

He looked at his hands. Strength 12. Is that enough to lift a slab?

"Damn it," he cursed softly. "Why me? Why couldn't I just be a hermit and stay in the shade?"

He scanned the immediate area. His eyes settled on a heavy, fire-extinguisher canister lying in the debris. If he could create a distraction, maybe he could lure the beast away before the man became lunch.

Lorenzo crept forward, his breathing controlled. He picked up a brick and tossed it toward a row of trash cans about twenty feet to his right. Clang! The sound echoed violently in the stagnant street.

The glowing beast snapped its head toward the noise, letting out a low, guttural chittering sound that made Lorenzo’s skin crawl. It bounded toward the trash cans, its claws digging deep gouges into the asphalt.

Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He scrambled toward the man trapped under the rubble.

"Hey, keep it down," Lorenzo whispered as he reached the trapped survivor.

"Please," the man wheezed, his eyes wide with terror. "It's… it's coming back."

"I see it. I’m going to lift this, you pull yourself out. Can you move?"

"My legs… I don't think so."

"Just pull your torso out," Lorenzo said, gripping the edge of the heavy slab. He planted his feet, feeling the muscles in his thighs burn. He gritted his teeth and heaved.

The system pinged in his peripheral vision.

[Physical exertion detected. Strength check initiated.]

The slab didn't just move; it groaned as Lorenzo shoved it aside with a surprising surge of kinetic energy. His muscles felt like coiled steel.

"Go! Move!" Lorenzo urged.

The man dragged himself across the dirt, gasping in pain. "Why are you helping me? It’s every man for himself out here."

"Shut up and move," Lorenzo snapped, grabbing the man by the collar and hauling him behind a sturdy concrete pillar.

The beast returned, its head whipping toward the spot where the man had been pinned. It let out a screech that sounded like tearing metal, then prowled the area, its glowing eyes scanning the darkness.

Lorenzo leaned his head against the pillar, his pulse slowing. He looked at the man, who was clutching a blood-soaked leg.

"You okay?"

"I… I think so. You're strong, kid. How did you do that?"

"Lucky day," Lorenzo said, watching the beast through a crack in the pillar. "Where’s your group? You can't be out here alone."

"There is no group," the man spat, wincing. "Just people killing people for a drop of water. You just saved a dead man walking."

Lorenzo didn't answer. He watched the beast finally lose interest and trot off toward the main road.

"Listen," Lorenzo said, leaning closer. "I need supplies. Water. Where do people go?"

The man pointed a shaky finger toward the north, toward the old shopping district. "The underground parking lot at the Grand Mall. Some people set up a barricade there. But don't expect a warm welcome. They don't take kindly to strangers."

"Thanks," Lorenzo said, standing up. "Good luck."

"Wait! Why help me?" the man called out, but Lorenzo was already retreating into the shadows.

He didn't look back. He felt the weight of his own existence shifting. He wasn't just surviving; he was interacting with the world, and the world was responding.

As he reached the end of the block, he felt it again. That prickling sensation on the back of his neck. Someone is watching.

He ducked into an alcove and waited, his hand tight around the scrap metal. A figure emerged from behind a shattered pillar—a woman, tall and composed, her movements far too graceful for this graveyard of a city. She wore dark, tactical-looking gear that looked miraculously clean.

She didn't reach for a weapon. She simply watched him with sharp, calculating eyes.

"You're an interesting one," the woman said, her voice smooth and cold.

Lorenzo tensed, his eyes narrowing. "Who are you? Did you follow me from the intersection?"

She stepped into the dying sunlight, a faint smirk playing on her lips. "I’ve been watching a lot of people today, Lorenzo. Most of them die screaming or begging. You… you do something else."

"I don't know who you think I am," Lorenzo said, his voice hard. "But you're trespassing on my hunt."

"Your hunt?" She laughed, a short, humorless sound. "You're a level one rookie who just realized the world has a menu. Don't act like a veteran, it’s unbecoming."

Lorenzo stepped forward, his knuckles white. "You know about the system?"

"I know a lot of things," the woman replied, tilting her head. "I’m Yara. And I suspect you have a lot of questions. But first, let’s see if you survive the next ten minutes."

"What’s that supposed to mean?"

Yara pointed behind him. A low, rhythmic thumping—a sound much heavier and faster than the previous beast—began to echo from the street ahead.

"It means," Yara said, her tone suddenly devoid of amusement, "that you just drew the attention of something that doesn't like being toyed with. If you want to keep breathing, you'll stop talking and start running."

"Why are you helping me?"

"I’m not," she said, disappearing into the shadows of the building to his left. "I'm just curious to see if you're worth the trouble."

Lorenzo stood alone in the street. The thumping grew louder, accompanied by the distinct sound of heavy paws scraping against stone.

"Great," he muttered, his heart hammering against his ribs as he turned to face the oncoming darkness. "Another one."

He gripped his improvised blade, his knuckles popping. The system flickered once, twice, a red warning icon flashing in his vision.

[Alert: High-threat entity detected nearby.]

"Come on then," Lorenzo growled, his voice steadying despite the terror. "Let's see what else this level gets me."

He didn't run. He shifted his weight, digging his boots into the dust, and waited for the shadow to reveal its teeth. He had a feeling that if he survived this, the conversation with Yara was only just beginning.

Lorenzo stopped. His boot caught on something that didn't feel like stone. It felt like leather, or maybe dried, hardened fabric."Ren? You’re stalling," Yara’s voice drifted back from the mouth of the alleyway, barely audible over the wind. "We don't have the luxury of sightseeing."Lorenzo didn't answer. He turned his flashlight—a dim, flickering thing—back toward the black aperture of the well. The water he had just drawn was clear, but the floor around the base was stained with dark, irregular splotches that hadn't been visible in the gloom. He leaned down, his heart hammering against his ribs. He pulled back a thick layer of sludge with his boot. Beneath it, a hand. Pale, shriveled, and unmistakably human."Damn it," he whispered, his voice shaking. He dragged his foot further, clearing away the muck. It wasn't just one. There was a heap of them, discarded like trash in the shadows of the pump room. They were victims of the 'parasites,' or perhaps, something much worse. He scramb

  • Chapter 6: The First Outpost

The walk to the outskirts of the Grand Mall was a grueling test of endurance. Every step felt like dragging lead weights through quicksand, and the air, thick with the smell of scorched earth and stagnant rot, did nothing to soothe Lorenzo’s frayed nerves. Yara moved ahead of him, a silent sentinel, her tactical gear barely making a sound against the jagged debris."Keep your head down," Yara muttered, not looking back. "We’re approaching a small cluster of survivors. Don't look like a mark."Lorenzo wiped his face, his hand coming away stained with grey soot. "A mark? I look like I’ve been chewed on and spat out by a monster. Who would want to rob me?""That’s exactly what makes you a mark," she retorted, her voice dry. "Desperate people don't care about quality. They care about what they can peel off your back. Keep your hands where they can see them."They emerged into a small clearing surrounded by the skeletal remains of what might have once been a residential garden. A group of

The silence of the ruins felt heavier than the concrete slabs they navigated. Lorenzo stumbled, his legs feeling like lead, the adrenaline of the battle finally draining away to leave a hollow, shivering void in his chest. Yara was a ghost ahead of him, her movements silent, her presence a constant, nagging reminder that he was out of his depth."You’re lagging, Ren. Keep it together," she said, not turning her head.Lorenzo wiped cold sweat from his forehead. "I’m fine. Just… the adrenaline is hitting a lag, that’s all."Yara stopped and turned, her eyes narrowed. She scanned his face, her gaze lingering on the spot where his arm had been shredded only minutes ago. "You don't look fine. You look like you’re drifting. If you collapse now, I’m leaving you for the scavengers.""Good to know," Lorenzo muttered, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. "You’re always so comforting, you know that?""I’m honest. There’s a difference." She gestured toward a hollowed-out lobby of a mid-rise office

  • Chapter 4: The Price of Protection

The first beast hit Lorenzo like a freight train of matted fur and rusted iron teeth. He grunted, his shoulder absorbing the impact, but he didn’t budge. He swung the shard of metal in a desperate, wide arc, catching the creature across its exposed, violet-pulsing throat. Black, ichor-like blood sprayed across his face, hot and metallic, but he didn't have time to wipe it away."Watch your six, Lorenzo!" Yara shouted. She was a whirlwind of motion beside him, her combat knife darting out with surgical precision. She ducked under a snapping maw, pivoted, and drove her blade into the eye socket of a second beast."I’ve got them!" Lorenzo roared, his voice thick with exertion. "Just keep the ones on the left off me!""You're doing alright, rookie," she panted, her cool facade finally cracking under the pressure of a dozen lunging horrors. "But don't get cocky. They’re just the scouts."A massive brute, double the size of the others, burst from the pile. It ignored Yara entirely, its sing

Yara’s voice hissed from the darkness behind him, sharp as a razor.Lorenzo didn't blink. His heart was a frantic drum, but the system’s warmth—that strange, artificial vitality—kept his hands from shaking. He gripped the scrap metal tight, his knuckles white. "I'm not standing there, I'm waiting.""Waiting? For what? A dinner invitation? Move!"He dodged to the left just as the beast lunged, its maw snapping shut on the empty air where his throat had been a second ago. The sound of its jaws hitting each other was like a bear trap closing. Lorenzo skidded on the grit, his boots finding purchase with unnatural ease."You're making a mistake, kid," Yara said, her voice sounding closer now, though she remained unseen. "
