The store’s backroom smelled of stale sugar and wet insulation. Caio ducked under the threshold, his breath hitching as he pulled the plastic poncho tighter around his frame. Beatriz followed him in, her movements fluid and silent, the crossbow still held at the ready until she slammed the heavy, fire-rated door shut.

"Lock it," she ordered, pointing at the deadbolt.

Caio didn't argue. He turned the heavy, rusted bolt, the metallic clack sounding like a gunshot in the confined space. He slid down the wall, his lungs finally allowing him to take a full, deep breath.

"You weren't kidding," he wheezed, tearing open the protein pouch Beatriz had given him. "That air out there... it’s like breathing needles."

Beatriz leaned her crossbow against a rack of empty shelves. She pulled back her hood, revealing a face streaked with grime but eyes that burned with a piercing, analytical intensity. "You get used to the burn, Caio. You just don't get used to the fear. How’s the arm?"

Caio looked down at his forearm. The glowing veins had dimmed to a soft, pulsating amber. "It feels... steady. Tlaloc—my internal, uh, voice—says it’s adapting."

"Tlaloc," she repeated, pulling a small canteen from her belt and taking a cautious sip. "An interesting name. My guide calls itself 'The Weaver.' Doesn't talk much, just gives me blue text and directions. Does yours actually chatter?"

"It’s a condescending prick," Caio muttered, biting into the dense, paste-like protein block. It tasted like cardboard and chemicals, but to his starving system, it was a feast. "It keeps calling me a 'corpse in waiting' and telling me my survival instinct is 'laughable.'"

Beatriz chuckled, a dry sound that reached her eyes. "Sounds about right. They’re cold, those systems. They aren't here to save us; they’re here to watch us evolve or expire. So, you’re an architecture student?"

"Architecture dropout, maybe," Caio said, gesturing vaguely at the cramped room. "I spent my nights studying structural blueprints of this district. I know these buildings better than I know my own phone number. That’s why I found the factory."

"Knowledge is the only currency left," she said, pulling a bundle of translucent, shimmering thread from her kit. It looked like high-tensile fishing line, but it hummed with a faint, static charge. "See this? This is Stalker Silk. Harvested it from a colony of arachnids that moved into the metro tunnels. They got hit by the rain, mutated, and started spinning this instead of regular web."

Caio leaned in, fascinated. "It looks indestructible."

"It’s better than that," she said, running a gloved finger along the thread. "It’s non-reactive. I weave it into my suits. It doesn't melt, it doesn't conduct the acidity, and it’s light as air. You want to survive this world, Caio, you stop trying to fight the rain and you start wearing it."

"I’m just using plastic sheeting," Caio admitted, feeling suddenly foolish. "I feel like a child playing dress-up."

"Everyone starts as a child," Beatriz said, standing up and pacing the small room. "But you’re alive. Most people who heard the sirens didn't make it to the first hour. You moved. You used a pry-bar, you harvested a heart, and you secured a shelter. That’s more than most of the veterans I’ve seen."

Caio looked up at her. "Why are you really here, Beatriz? You’re clearly miles ahead of me in this game. You don't need a partner."

Beatriz stopped pacing. She looked at the ceiling, where a small, dark stain was beginning to expand. "Because the rain is changing. Look at that."

Caio followed her gaze. A drip of emerald, glowing liquid landed on the concrete with a sharp hiss. Then another. The steady, rhythmic pitter-patter of a heavier rainfall began to rattle the roof above them.

"The drizzle phase is over," Caio whispered, his blood turning cold. "The heavy storm is returning."

"The roof isn't going to hold," Beatriz said, her voice turning sharp. "This store was built in the eighties. The sealant is already bubbling. If that ceiling goes, the floor is going to liquefy. We’re going to be standing in a lake of acid."

"My shelter," Caio said, jumping to his feet. "We have to go now! If the ceiling fails here, we're done."

"The streets are already flooded," Beatriz noted, moving to the door and peeking through a crack in the frame. "We won't make it to your factory in this current. The runoff is waist-deep by now."

Caio felt his panic rising, but then the blue text bloomed in his vision, steady and cool.

[WARNING: STRUCTURE COMPROMISE IMMINENT.]

[SYSTEM ALERT: HARVESTED CORROSIVE HEART ENERGY REMAINS IN RESERVE.]

"Wait," Caio said, his eyes widening. "I can fix this."

"With what? A prayer?" Beatriz scoffed, though she turned toward him.

"I have the energy," Caio said, stepping toward the center of the room. "The heart I harvested—Tlaloc says it can be used for more than just a shelter upgrade. I can project a temporary field. A patch."

"You can manipulate the System’s energy like that?" Beatriz asked, her skepticism momentarily replaced by awe. "I’ve never seen a builder do that in the field. That’s a high-level skill."

"I don't know if it's a skill or a death wish," Caio muttered. He closed his eyes, focusing on the hum beneath his skin. He reached out with his mind, pulling at the reserve of emerald energy he’d felt when he grabbed the heart. "System! Direct internal energy to structural sealing. Target: Roof surface directly above us!"

The air in the room grew heavy, charged with static. A shimmering, blue-white light erupted from Caio’s palms, spiraling upward toward the ceiling.

"Caio, watch out!" Beatriz shouted, pulling her hood up.

The ceiling groaned as the energy hit it. Where the emerald rain was eating through, Caio’s blue energy began to knit the cracks together, solidifying the concrete and metal into a shimmering, reinforced seal. The hissing of the acid ceased instantly.

Caio slumped to his knees, his face pale and slick with sweat. The blue light faded, leaving behind a ceiling that glowed with a faint, residual hum.

"You... you actually did it," Beatriz breathed, walking over to touch the ceiling with a gloved hand. It was cold, smooth, and utterly impervious to the deluge outside. "You didn't just patch it; you reinforced the molecular structure of the concrete."

"I'm... I'm exhausted," Caio gasped, leaning against the wall.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: ENERGY RESERVES DEPLETED.]

[SUCCESS: TEMPORARY STRUCTURE PATCH ESTABLISHED.]

[NEW ALLY DETECTED: CRAFTING SPECIALIST.]

[BONUS UNLOCKED: SYNERGY BUFF - RECOVERY RATE INCREASED.]

Beatriz knelt beside him, her expression unreadable. She took off her glove and placed a hand on his shoulder. It was a firm, grounding gesture. "You’re dangerous, Caio Prasetyo. You have no idea what you just did. You didn't just fix a roof; you just signaled every scavenger within five miles that someone with high-energy output is hiding in this store."

"Oh," Caio whispered, his head swimming. "That... that sounds bad."

"It’s terrible," she agreed, but she was smiling. She reached into her pack and pulled out a coil of the Stalker Silk. "But it means we’re going to be very busy. If they come, we’ll be ready. And if you can do that again... we might just survive the night."

Caio looked at the reinforced ceiling, then at the woman beside him. The terror of the dying world outside felt a million miles away, replaced by the strange, electric thrill of a new reality. He wasn't just an architecture student anymore. He was a player. And for the first time, he felt like he was holding the controls.

"Ready to start building?" Beatriz asked, holding out a spool of the shimmering thread.

Caio took it, his hand steadying. "Yeah. Let’s build."

"Beatriz, look at the ledge!" Caio’s voice cracked, the pitch rising with the sheer absurdity of what he was seeing. The scarlet liquid didn't just sit on the brickwork; it hissed with a predatory hunger, far more aggressive than the green mist from before. Where the red drops touched the stone, the masonry didn't just pit—it dissolved into a thick, bloody slurry that slid down the side of the building like melting wax."I see it, Caio! Shut up and move!" Beatriz snapped, though her hands were shaking as she shoved the spool of silk into her pack. "That’s not just a higher concentration. The pH level—it’s off the charts. It’s eating the building’s skeleton!""The fire escape is iron!" Caio yelled, pointing toward the window they had just climbed through. "If the rain hits the supports, we’re going to drop four stories into a lake of red acid!""Then we don't use the fire escape," Beatriz said, her eyes darting around the room. She grabbed her crossbow and slung it over her shoulder. "

The reinforced ceiling hummed with a faint, dying vibration, the blue light of the patch slowly fading into the grey of the concrete. Caio slumped against the wall, his chest heaving, his fingers still white-knuckled around the spool of Stalker Silk."You need to breathe, Caio," Beatriz said, her voice dropping into a calm, steady rhythm. She knelt beside him, checking the seals on her own gear. "You’re running on fumes. If you pass out now, the spiders will find us before the rain does."Caio looked up at her, wiping a smear of grime from his forehead. "Spiders? You’re serious about hunting those things? I thought you were just using the word as a metaphor for the scavengers.""I don't do metaphors when I'm hungry and cold," she replied, reaching into her kit to pull out a jagged, sharpened rod. "The Stalker Silk I have is running low. If we want to survive the night, we need to upgrade your kit. You’re walking around in a garbage bag, and that’s going to get you killed the moment yo

The air outside was a thick, caustic soup that clung to Caio’s makeshift poncho. Every step felt like walking through a dream of slow-motion destruction. The fine, green mist hissed as it kissed his plastic shield, and he could feel the heat radiating through the thin material, a constant reminder of the danger."Keep moving, boy," Tlaloc’s voice rasped in his mind, sounding like gravel shifting in a tomb. "Your poncho is losing integrity. You have ten minutes before you become the main course for the local rot.""I’m moving as fast as I can!" Caio hissed back, his breath ragged. He dodged a collapsed streetlamp that was bubbling, its iron skin peeling away in sheets of orange rust. "My lungs feel like they're on fire.""Adaptation takes its toll. Focus on the store."The Quick-Mart stood a block away, its glass storefront shattered and weeping green liquid onto the sidewalk. Caio’s boots crunched over shattered soda bottles and debris. "How do I seal it?" Caio asked, his hands shaking as he stared at the glowing green heart in his palm. "Do I just... press it against the floor?""Do not be foolish," Tlaloc’s voice rumbled inside his skull, vibrating his teeth. "The System is not a primitive tool. Focus your mind on the prompt, or simply speak the command.""Okay, okay," Caio muttered, swallowing hard as he looked at the floating blue text. "Upgrade. Use the heart. Upgrade the shelter."[CONSUMING MATERIAL: CORROSIVE HEART...][UPGRADING SANCTUARY... 10%... 50%... 100%][SHELTER LEVEL 1 ESTABLISHED.]"Whoa," Caio gasped, taking a step back.A sudden wave of bright blue light washed out from beneath his sneakers, sweeping across the dark basement floor like a physical tide. Where the light touched, the damp concrete seemed to harden, its deep cracks filling with a shimmering, metallic blue resin. The rusted steel hatch above him groaned, the rotten rubber seals melting away to be replaced by a seamless, airtight lock

“Watch out!” Caio screamed, his voice cracking as he threw his body to the cold, damp concrete floor. The heavy, muscular mass of the mutated rodent sailed through the air, its front claws missing Caio’s shoulder by inches before crashing violently into a stack of old wooden crates. The rotted wood shattered, sending splinters flying through the dark basement.“Get away from me!” Caio yelled, scrambling to his feet and swinging the heavy iron pry-bar with both hands. “Just stay back!”He swung with all his strength, and the metal bar connected with the creature’s shoulder with a dull, sickening thud.“Ouch! Damn it, that felt like hitting a solid block of concrete!” Caio cried out, shaking his hands as the vibration traveled up his arms. “My whole arm is numb!”“And you swing like a frail child,” Tlaloc’s voice boomed inside his skull, dripping with cold amusement. “Get up, boy. It is already turning.”“I can see that!” Caio shouted, backpedaling as the beast hissed, its sulfur-yellow
