Emma sat at her desk, staring at the documents in front of her, but she wasn’t reading it. Her mind replayed the argument in the car with Liam, over and over. Every word he said, every pause, and everything, it all lingered in her head.

He had been so defensive, so careful to dodge every question she asked. He had smiled faintly at the end, the same calm, and unreadable expression he always had on his face, and yet, it had somehow made her blood boil. She didn’t like the way he could stay so composed while she was left twisting inside, trying to figure out what he was thinking.

She leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples. Why does he do that? Why can’t he just answer me?

Her thoughts went further. The way he had brushed off Nina Chen, and the way he had waved off her questions about the gala, there was something there, something he wasn’t saying. She couldn’t put her finger on it, but the nagging feeling that he was hiding something wouldn’t leave her alone.

Saturday morning felt more quiet than usual at the Harper estate. The usual movement of staff preparing for the weekend was present, but the house itself seemed to operate differently. Emma had been reading through some Titan Global documents, trying to keep her mind on work rather than Ethan or the recent chain of events. Liam, as always, moved quietly around the house, sorting through messages and checking details on his device. The front door opened and closed with a soft sound. Emma looked up, expecting a staff member or delivery, but her eyes immediately landed on the figure entering the hall. Her father stepped inside, suitcase in hand, and he was dressed neatly in a navy blazer and crisp shirt. There was nothing dramatic in his entrance, just the arrival of a man returning home from a business trip.“Emma,” he said, his voice calm and steady. “I’m home.”Emma set her papers aside, rising from her seat. She smiled genuinely. “Dad! You’re back.”He nodded, setting the suitcase

  • CHAPTER FIFTY SIX

Tara never knew when to stop talking. That had always been her weakness, she liked feeling informed, connected, and important. And on that particular afternoon, sitting in a cozy café with a woman she barely knew well enough to trust, Tara’s mouth moved faster than her brain. The woman’s name was Rina. Tara only knew her through a mutual acquaintance, someone who claimed Rina worked in “corporate intelligence.” Tara assumed that meant something like private HR or data research. She didn’t bother to ask. They were supposed to be discussing harmless gossip from their workspace, but Tara slipped, as she always did, into repeating rumors she shouldn’t even know.“So apparently,” Tara said, lowering her voice dramatically, “Titan Global is paying special attention to Emma. The girl is getting too close to something big even my boyfriend, Patrick got fired because of it.”Rina’s hand paused around her cup. “Too close to what?”Tara shrugged. “I don’t know the details, but something weird ha

  • CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE

Emma closed her laptop after finishing the last of her reports. She stretched her fingers, ready to take a short break, when a new notification popped up in the corner of her screen.New Email: No SenderShe frowned. No sender? She clicked it cautiously. There was no greeting, no signature, nothing except one short message written in plain text:“You don’t know who he is. Take a step back.”Emma stared at the screen for a moment, confused. There were no links, no attachments, nothing threatening on the surface. It almost looked like a prank or a glitch. She wasn’t the type to panic over random emails, so she simply shrugged and moved her cursor to delete it.“Spam,” she muttered as the email disappeared into her trash folder.Just as she shut her laptop, Liam walked into the room quietly. He held a towel in one hand, as if he had just washed his face, and glanced toward her desk.“You’re done working?” he asked casually.Emma nodded. “Yeah. Just a weird email came in, but it’s nothing

  • CHAPTER FIFTY FOUR

Liam sat at his desk long after everyone had gone about their day and the house had calmed down. He was reviewing every piece of information he could gather about Ethan’s attack. The call he received had been unsettling, but he couldn’t let it distract him from finding the truth. Whoever had targeted Ethan wasn’t random. The way the attack had been executed made that clear. From the witness statements and the surveillance footage, Liam observed some patterns that told him this was the work of professionals. The movements were precise, coordinated, and efficient. Every hit, the timing, and the escape route showed training and planning. They could have killed Ethan without hesitation. That they didn’t kill him sent a message. It wasn’t about destroying him, it was about warning him.Liam leaned back in his chair, rubbing his forehead. He ran through all the possible reasons. Ethan didn’t owe anyone money. He wasn’t in a dangerous business deal. Nothing in his past had screamed “targe

“Liam… what did Ethan say to you last night?” Emma asked, her voice steady, but her eyes searching his.Liam looked up slowly, taking a moment before replying. “I didn’t really understand him,” he said calmly. “He was panicking, and speaking too fast. His words didn’t make sense most of the time so I just let it go.”Emma frowned, not fully understanding. “Panicking? About what?”He shook his head. “I don’t know. He kept stopping and starting, repeating himself. I couldn’t follow. I just… tried to listen but I didn’t get any reasonable thing from his words.”She studied him, noting his calm expression, the way he didn’t look worried, and didn’t give away any clue. Something in her told her he knew more than he let on, but she decided not to press further.“Hmm,” she murmured to herself. “I hope he’s okay because he acted strangely today.”“Strange?” Liam frowned, “How so? Did he say anything to you?”“No,” she shook her head. “He didn’t even speak to me. He didn’t want me near. He loo

That evening, the Harper estate felt unusually tense as words had finally reached the older Harpers that Patrick wasn’t suspended and he wasn’t demoted either. He was outright fired and barred from stepping onto Titan Global property again.Victoria arrived at the mansion in a state of barely controlled panic. Tara was with her, pacing the hallway while seriously clutching her purse.“I can’t believe this,” Victoria muttered as they walked toward the dining hall. “Patrick may not be perfect, but firing him without warning? That’s excessive.”“Titan Global doesn’t fire people like that,” Tara said sharply. “Not unless something big happened. Someone with real power had to be behind it.”Victoria paused, lowering her voice. “Do you think it was Emma?”Tara scoffed. “Emma doesn’t have that kind of influence. She can’t even control her own department, she’s just a partner by luck. She’s not the reason.”Victoria nodded, though the answer didn’t reassure her. “Then who?”Tara didn’t answer
