A bullet strikes the concrete right between my feet, spraying sharp stone chips against my legs.

I dive behind a overturned train car, dragging Ifeoma down with me just as a storm of energy rounds tears through the air above our heads. The red emergency lights spin lazily against the damp concrete walls, casting long, frantic shadows across the underground station.

"They tracked our signal through the drainage pipe," Ifeoma says, her voice low and steady. She pulls a small, modified data tool from her pocket, her fingers moving fast over the glass screen. "Kade, how many exits does this station have?"

Kade crouches beside us, reloading his heavy plasma rifle with a sharp metallic click. "Only two. The main tunnel we came through, and an old maintenance shaft on the far side. But the enforcers are already blocking both."

I look out from behind the metal barrier. Zara stands near the front of the enforcer line, his white lab coat stained with soot and rain. He does not look like a calm programmer anymore. His face is twisted into a hard, angry sneer, and his hands grip a heavy rifle with absolute focus.

"Simeon!" Zara calls out, his voice echoing loudly off the concrete curves of the station. "You cannot run from the system. Step out now, and we save you the pain of another memory wipe."

"Go to hell, Zara!" I shout back, my hands clenching into tight fists.

I look down at my palms. The black fire stirs beneath my skin, warm and heavy. I can feel the power rising up my arms, feeding on my anger and the bitter taste of betrayal. I am done hiding in alleys. I am done letting these people decide when I live or die.

"We need a distraction," I tell Ifeoma and Kade.

Ifeoma looks up from her data tool, a sharp, cunning smile touching the corners of her mouth. She has that look again—the look of a person who enjoys setting traps just as much as breaking them.

"I can overload the station power grid," Ifeoma says quietly. "It will blow out the lights and fry the enforcers' helmets, blinding their targeting systems for ten seconds. But it will also trap us in total darkness."

"Ten seconds is all I need," I reply.

Kade grunts, slinging his rifle over his shoulder and pulling a heavy smoke grenade from his tactical vest. "Do it. I will cover the right flank."

Ifeoma taps the final command into her device.

A sharp electrical snap echoes through the station, and every light goes out instantly. The room drops into pitch blackness.

For a single second, everything is quiet. Then, shouts of confusion break out among the enforcers as their helmet visors fail.

"Now!" I yell.

Kade throws the smoke grenade straight toward the center of the station. It hits the concrete and explodes into a thick, choking cloud of gray smoke, mixing with the sparks from blown-out control boxes.

I jump up from behind the train car, my hands blazing with dark, roaring fire. The black flames light up the smoky room, casting terrifying shadows against the walls.

Zara curses in the dark. "Focus your fire on the center!"

Enforcer rifles flash blindly, sending wild energy beams into the ceiling and walls. But I am already moving. I dash across the open floor, faster than I have ever run in my life, dodging the wild shots with ease.

Before the enforcers can adjust their aim, I slam my glowing hands down onto the concrete floor.

The black fire explodes outward in a ring of pure energy, sweeping across the ground like a shockwave. The force hits the enforcers' boots, lifting them off their feet and slamming them hard against the concrete walls. Their weapons clatter away into the dark, and the armored men slump down, unconscious.

When the smoke clears, only Zara remains standing near the tunnel entrance.

His rifle is gone, knocked out of his hands by the shockwave. He stumbles back a step, his eyes wide as he looks at me through the dim light of my burning hands. The arrogant golden boy is finally gone, replaced by a terrified man who realizes his experiment has slipped completely out of his control.

I walk slowly toward him, the heat radiating from my skin making the air shimmer.

"You think you own the board, Zara," I say, my voice cold and steady. "You think you can reset my life whenever things do not go your way."

Zara tries to back away, but his heel catches on a fallen metal crate, and he tumbles hard onto his back. He looks up at me, raising a hand as if to ward off the heat. "Wait, Simeon. You do not understand. Kanmi is just a puppet. There are others above him in the core council. If you kill me, you will never find out who ordered your parents' murder."

I stop just inches away from him, looking down into his pale face. The temptation to burn him is heavy, but Ifeoma steps up beside me, her expression completely calm and calculated.

"Do not kill him," Ifeoma says quietly. "We need him. Zara has the security passcodes to the upper district tower. Without him, we cannot get past the main firewall."

Zara looks up at Ifeoma with a mixture of betrayal and shock. "You would help him destroy the council? After everything we trained you for?"

"I was never on your side, Zara," Ifeoma replies, her voice flat. "I was just waiting for the right moment to watch your system burn."

I look at Ifeoma, then back down at Zara. The anger in my chest is still there, burning like hot coals, but I know she is right. Revenge is not just about a single strike. It is about taking everything away from them the way they took everything from me.

I reach down, grabbing the front of Zara's lab coat and hauling him up to his feet.

"You are going to open the tower doors for us," I tell him, my eyes glowing with dark fire.

Before Zara can answer, a sharp, high-pitched beep echoes from the pocket of his lab coat.

Ifeoma's eyes narrow. She reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a small, blinking emergency communicator. The screen flashes a single line of red text from the upper sector.

Simulation reset initiated by Director Kanmi. All sectors will clear in three minutes.

Zara lets out a sudden, frantic laugh, blood smear on his lip. "You are too late, Simeon. Kanmi does not need me anymore. He just triggered the master purge. The entire underground—and everyone in it—is about to be erased."
